Chris Ash (Secondary Coach Jacksonville Jaguars)

The most important hire in coach Meyer remaining career. Let it be a great one, proven. Don't worry about recruiting. You already have plenty of good recruiters. Don't even think about worrying about Fickle. Get it right please.

Proven isn't always the best angle, as they're usually more expensive, and want more control. I'd take young, hungry and innovative, and that goes for a potential new co-OC/QB coach as well. And it's CFB, you ALWAYS worry about recruiting

TO be blunt I think it's a career killer level mistake.
It worked alright for Schiano, he got tothe NfL, he just wants suited for that game. If he can make Rutgers win cinsistently(7+ wins) in his tenure, he can turn that into a higher move in a few years. There's enough talent in NJ, that of he can keep some kids home, he'll win some games that Flood screwed up. With the way CFB goes, coaching openigs happen so often that he'll always be able to find a job if he's successful.

Schiano coached Rutgers in a Big East that was shedding it's top teams to the ACC. He wasn't facing Ohio State, TSUN, Sparty & PSU in the same division every year.

I wish Ash lots of success, but I honestly believe this was a poor decision on his part. It's like taking the Illinois job.

Hello hyperbole! It's a hard gig no doubt. But to say career killer is way over the top. If you don't think he can parlay a gig at Rutgers by just making them play tough and win a few games he shouldn't your nuts. Nobody would expect them to be winning their division. But a tough, defensive minded coach could make a noticeable impact in a program and ADs would notice.

The big factor though will be landing local talent. But if he shows his recruiting chops bringing in good to great talent And coaches up the 3 star guys he can make an impact. At tOSU he had good players to work with, granted, but look what a huge impact he had immediately. The previous staff had good talent to keep in mind but Withers was just not that good. Ash stepped right in, grabbed the reins and the turnaround was dramatic.

It won't happen that quick at Rutgers but if he has some 7 and 8 win seasons in his first 3-5 years and beats a few teams he shouldn't and has some hard fought losses he will move up the ladder again. It's not the job I personally would have taken. I would have held out another year for something better but calling it a career killer is laughable. Tell that to Bill Snyder, Gary Patterson, Gary Pinkle, Gary Barnett, Jim Grobe, Dennis Erickson, etc.

Might as well go to a team in a hotbed of talent that a lot of people don't talk about. He also gets to stay coaching in the best conference in the country! Good luck coach, until we meet on the gridiron.

This! And he's a premature list of candidates:

The DC is THE team. Misfire on this one and good night. We don't want someone to learn on the job and we don't want recruiting to be a main focus. If it's there, fine, but do not exclude a great D coach because he is not a very good recruiter. D first and foremost. Winning is your best recruiting tool. giving the keys to young, hungry and innovative? Luke Fickle got us the worst D in school history. Pay the money or lose it.

I think guys like Tom Herman, Chris Ash and Kerry Coombs would allbe considered inexperienced coordinators and they have done well with Xs And Os and still recruit great, in today's game, you better be a solid recruiter or get out of the way. Guys like LJsr, Smart and Bud Foster have been able to have a great balance for years, so we should expect nothing less. And we're not BG or OU, of course an up and coming guy wouldn't be learning on the job, we'd get a guy ready to make the next step, like Zach Smith has done. Hiring any coach in today's game, a focus has to be put on recruiting especially if you'll be on this staff
