Charlie Weis (ex-Kansas HC, ex-Fla OC, Notre Dame legend, UnDecided Schematic Advantage)

Fat Bastard just can't leave his cheating ways behind him. When the decided schematic advantage has left the building, there's always cheating.

The Associated Press: Laptopgate? Notre Dame insists it wasn't cheating
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) ? Charlie Weis insisted Notre Dame wasn't trying to break the rules by having a laptop computer in its coaching box during a 23-7 loss to Michigan State on Saturday.
And then in true Charlie Weis fashion, he blames an innocent intern and throws him under the bus.

"I asked upstairs if there was one," Weis recalled. "I was talking to Michael and he said, `No.' Then, I guess one of the interns had one over there. Then I immediately told (the officials) that there was an intern (with a laptop) and he took it off a ledge and put it on the floor."
Nothing is ever this fat [censored]'s fault.

Go ahead, ask him if he wants a mint; just one thin mint.

It's wafer-thin!

Have you ever tried to get a pizza on game day in E.L. shit nuts? I was having the kid order a couple of pizza's online for the trip back to ND and getting a jump on the competition. If having a schematic advantage over the competition for pizza is wrong I don't want to be right.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go strap myself into the hydraulic lift to be laid down and get some sleep, my fucking knee is killing me.

Because although having a laptop in the coaching box is illegal, putting it on the floor makes it OK. What, was the intern then forced to find a beanbag chair so as to conveniently continue tracking runs and passes after having been booted from his cushy bar stool? "Son, is that cocaine I see in your car there?" "It's on the floor, officer." "Oh. Carry on then."

Shit. They could have had all the damn cameras at Universal Studios on their sideline last year (and this year) and it isn't going to make a difference.

That's what you think. :roll1:

They're going to take all of the recordings, sprinkle in some CGI, and next think you know, ND has two national titles in two years on film.

The domer boards are amazing. While some heretics have certainly appeared to question Weis, there is still a solid wall of unquestioning support for him. Some of their lines of reasoning are downright comical.

  • "Wait 2 more years" Huh! You said that when he was hired. Then you said it two years in, and now you're saying it four years down the road. If my memory of your boards is correct (and it is) before last year's epic meltdown 99% of domers were fully expecting a national title this year.
  • There's a talent gap. Huh! You've stacked up 3 top 5 recruiting classes in a row.
  • Next year Weis will have "all his players" OK, this is just sounding ridiculous. Next year, you'll be pointing to some walk-on 6th year medical redshirt and saying that "next year all of Ty's players will finally be gone."
I simply could not understand this slobbering man-love for Weis at this late stage. Then it dawned on me. In their minds, Weis is ONE OF THEM! Weis is the ND obsessed, jock-sniffer who never played the game. He is the average ndnation/BGI illustrated poster who's grabbed the brass ring. I think that the domers look at Weis and subconsciously see themselves writ large. That is why they're having such a hard time cutting the cord to fat bastard and that his validation is just around the corner (or two years down the road) because it's really their validation.

Heh. ORD, this got me thinking. Do you ever think Brady Quinn, in a moment of heated criticism by Weis, ever blurted out loud: "Hey, coach - have you ever in your life thrown the ball more than 25 yards? No? Then shut the fuck up."

How can the Irish stay this bad?

At some point late Saturday afternoon, while drinking a beer and watching three college football games simultaneously ? one and a half with each eyeball, the way the good Lord intended ? something hit me:

Good grief, Notre Dame is bad AGAIN.

The Irish are 2-1, but never mind that. They struggled to beat a San Diego State team that is among the worst teams in the whole Division Formerly Known as I-A. They beat Michigan largely because the Wolverines apparently dipped their hands in baby oil before every play, then dropped the football. Then they were thoroughly outplayed by Michigan State.
So forget the record for a moment. The Fighting Irish are 111th in the country (out of 119 teams) in rushing offense. They are 107th in total offense and 68th in total defense. Notre Dame's offensive line, which was the worst in the history of offensive linedom last year, is still weak.
This is a bad, borderline bowl team, and it is about to get exposed.
The Irish, always tough schedulers, appeared to get a few breaks with the docket this year, but every game is losable, except maybe Syracuse at home.
I don't know why I'm surprised. Notre Dame has not won a bowl game since 1993. (In that time, Wake Forest has won three.)
Since that 1993 season, Notre Dame has won 60 percent of its games. The Irish's record in that time is 103-68-1. That might not seem so awful, but look at it this way: In order to have a 103-68-1 career record, Pete Carroll would have to go 25-54-1 in his next 80 games, and that is impossible because a) there are no ties in college football anymore and b) Carroll gets to face Notre Dame every year.
I don't understand how this happens. I just don't. I don't understand how Notre Dame goes through the last few years of a Hall of Fame coach, then works its way through three replacements without looking like Notre Dame.
Since 1993, Notre Dame is 4-9 against Michigan State. Michigan State is 79-78-1 against everybody else.
It is tempting, then, to say Notre Dame is a relic of college football's past, like leather helmets and a bowl system that made sense. After all, the last time the Fighting Irish made a serious run at a national title, this year's college freshmen were two years old. Urban Meyer shunned the Irish for Florida, then won a national title with the Gators.
But the Notre Dame name is still strong. Charlie Weis has used it to reel in some highly regarded recruiting classes. This is strange, but when Weis was hired, everybody figured he could handle the Xs and Os, and nobody knew if he could recruit. Now we know he can recruit.
But is he the coach we thought he was?
Since receiving a 10-year contract extension seven games into the 2005 season, Weis is 19-14. (Another fun comparison: Tyrone Willingham was 21-15 at Notre Dame.) Weis put together two good years with Brady Quinn at quarterback, but can he do it with his own guys?
Maybe.
But not this year. Definitely not this year.

That, and ND fans are collectively, well, like people thought of France during the freedom fries era. That is, once upon a time, they thought they were better than everyone else because they dominated, and now they think they're better than everyone else because they don't. Used to be ND fans talked shit about how much better their team was...now it's the superior academics and coaches that have been gone for half a decade who are holding them back, but that's OK, they're still better than everyone else anyway. 12-0 or 0-12, they dun be superior.

You know, Charlie could be a classic example of the "Peter Principle*":

The theory that employees within an organization (or in Charlie's case football coaching) will advance to their highest level of competence and then be promoted to and remain at a level at which they are incompetent.

* Theory that people rise in their career in every hierarchy to the level of their own incompetence; based on the book The Peter Principle and Why Things Always Go Wrong by Lawrence J. Peter.
