Charlie Weis (ex-Kansas HC, ex-Fla OC, Notre Dame legend, UnDecided Schematic Advantage)

Similar records after 3 years, but lets face it, Willingham's inept offense would have never produced the points in '05 and '06, and he would won less games. Willingham had trouble beating anyone worth a damn, he had one decent year in '02 when they won 7 or 8 in a row soley with special teams, a little defense, and a lot of luck. Willingham also took a dump with recruiting. At least Weis is bringing in talent now. Willingham's 2005 season was not looking good if they would have retained him. 2005 brought in a fairly inexperienced defense, an offense that still had no identity and was on track to look almost as bad as last year's, and they were coming off a poor 2004 season already. One of the many nails in the coffin for Ty was the fact he was routinely getting blown out by teams, especially USC. Even before USC was the powerhouse they are today, they beat Willingham ALL 3 years by 30 points or more, along with 30+ losses to Michigan, Florida State, and some others. Willingham's teams were never complete, and could never compete with the top tier opponents.
I'm not about to say "Oust Charlie" after one bad season. We knew it wasn't going to be pretty after losing that offense. Corwin Brown began taking the defense in the right direction last year, together with Tenuta they should have things looking decent sometime soon. If Charlie doesn't have a decent run this year, there may be problems and last year's goose egg would have been a waste. I have my reservations, if the improvements come this year, last year is irrelevant. If we see more of the same, the bleeding has to stop.

So again, essentially ND nation and Charlie are hanging their collective hat on one close loss to USC.

Lots of teams lose an outstanding unit one year and remain somewhat competitive the next. Writing off the worst season in ND history, and one of the worst in major CFB history, as just a retooling effort, or one bad year, is disengenius at best.

I know the pat answer to this is Charlies team was depleted because of Ty's recruiting, well this is CW's 4th year. He's recruited and developed every SR, every starter and every backup. The date stamp on the "it's Ty's fault" excuse is expiring soon.

Yes, he lost one game to Navy last year in triple overtime, lost to a decent Navy team although they're mediocre by most football standards. I'm glad Navy got the win, and I congradulated their fans.

I'm pretty sure a Willingham coach team would have lost to Stanford, Tennessee, Purdue, and probably others in 2005. Based on the previous 3 years, he would have gotten blown out against USC by 30+ points again. Willingham lost at least one game each year by 30+, if not multiple games. Weis lost his in one rebuilding year with a young cast that he threw to the wolves, not a bright move for last season. If it doesn't pay dividends this year, it was pointless.

Lots of teams are competitive even in rebuilding years, this one wasn't, and it was on Weis. He made the decisions he did and was clueless as to how unprepared the team was last year. Theres nothing we can do about it now, but if they pull a decent season out of their ass I really could care less how awful last season was. A good foundation will be in place for future seasons with the recruits that are coming in. If this season is a flop too, Weis will probably be pressured to move on.

Actually, most of the seniors this year are still part of Willingham's recruits, Charlie only picked up a few players after leaving the Patriots. Also, I've never said that last season was Ty's fault, that was mostly Weis's fault. A lot of ND fans do pin it on Ty, but Weis could have stopped the bleeding by doing more his first two seasons. He really should have worked in the underclassmen earlier, throwing a large handful of them out there contributed to a lot of last season's woes. The biggest problem was the offensive line though

The O-line was decent Weis's first year, mainly made up of Davie's old recruits. In following years the line became worse and worse. Last year's line had empty positions plugged with sophomores and freshmen with little or no experience, Sam Young being the exception. They provided poor protection as shown by the 50+ sacks, and the running game went no where as the linemen were getting manhandled and pushed backwards on many plays. Supposidly the line will be bigger this year, hopefully the experience will pay off. Sullivan is gone, but he had problems snapping in shotgun sets and was getting beaten, pointing fingers at teammates instead. The line shoudl be improved this year, I don't know if they're ready for prime time yet, by next year the studs will be seniors and juniors and should be dominating. If not, there will be more of the same like last season.

C'mon. Charlie spelled it out quite clearly. He, "could get hoodlums and thugs and win tomorrow."

See, Charlie isn't the problem. His genius is as magnificent as it's ever been. It's just that his players aren't talented enough to execute that genius.

Man's own words. :(

Weis hasn't fixed that problem :slappy:

Funny, Ohio State won 14 in a row that year soley on special teams, some defense, slightly more offense and a LOT of luck. But I'd rather be lucky than good......

Funny how Fat Boy's best seasons were with Willingham's best players.....

True, not our fault that Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Tennessee, and UCLA were beaten in years they weren't spectacular, heh heh. In retrospect, I believe thats part of the reason ND jumped the gun and gave Weis the contract extension prematurely. The first year brought 2 losses in the regular season, but the team was at least competitive which was a first. The other part came with the NFL rumors that were spread.

The Irish bring the luck with them once in awhile, but they need to be good rather than just lucky :) They brought a lot of luck with them in '02, but the luck ran out against BC as usual and USC. The wins in '02 were really ugly at times, and definitly shaved a few years. It can be pretty frustrating when your leading scorer, the kicker, graduates and the team goes downhill afterwards. Waaay too many drives that ended in 3 points, which is where "Field Goal Jesus" came from. Theres your history lesson.

And Willingham's best season, singular, came from Bob Davie's best players, a pretty stacked defense. Actually, because Willingham got ousted in 3 years, Weis even used some of Davie's players his first year. Once again, I go back to last year and the lack of experience/talent on the O-line, part Weis's fault for not getting anyone but Young experience, partly due to the fact that there was a lack of decent linemen left.

Weis clarifies his Michigan comment

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis violated his own rule about never providing opponents with bulletin board material.
It didn't happen while talking to reporters, but instead speaking before a group of Notre Dame supporters at a breakfast before the Blue-Gold game in April. He was talking about his expectations for this season, saying his team would make a statement in its opening game against San Diego State.

Weis also said that he'd always take the ball on a coin toss if he had the opportunity, but last week against San Diego he opted to take it in the 2nd half. In the post game he said he went back on his word because he felt at this point his offense basically sucked while his defense was more refined on that side of the ball, so he wanted as a show of faith in the D to say "Its up to you." It turned out to work well, I think he should rethink his position on other things as well heh.

Exclusive breaking news

Charlie Weis is to unveil an exciting offensive and defensive plan against the Wolverines this week.

The offensive plan has been leaked from previous testimony given in camera earlier this year.

Here is a picture of an expert mapping out the goals for the offensive strategy. First, acquire as much fuel as possible to get through the game. No fourth quarter let down from lack of calories this week!

Next, Charlie will turn on his charm and try to be as offensive as possible. From the signs of this training file, it looks like things could get very offensive right under the very nose of Touchdown Jesus this week.

The defensive strategy rules out the use of cameras, which Weis is thought to believe is "too old school". Instead, Weis is calling for coaching to target specific players on the Wolverine offense who have the potential to wreak havoc on opposing defenses. One hitch in that plan is that, even after the week of reviewing film, no one is certain which players should be targeted.

But, it doesn't matter. Weis has a plan for more distant targets as the game progresses.

By the way, someone tell me this genius isn't pointing a weapon, with a magazine in place whether loaded or not, down range with a man in camo in front of the line. Coaching tip of the week: If you are too fat to get your arms in front of you to properly aim a weapon, it really is time to push away from the table earlier at dinner time.

Today vs. Mich St. Charlie is wearing some very poofy windpants. The ABC announcers made fun of him saying something like "folks there's no air being blown through those pants". LOL

Guess he's got a big walking cast on his injured leg. Still looks funny, though.
