Game Thread CFP Semifinal: Ohio State vs. Clemson, Sat 12/31 @ 7p ET, ESPN

Let me preface this by saying I do not watch NFL football and have no clue how much/when they practice.

Joey Bosa plays this Saturday in Cleveland & doesn't play again until Jan 1 (in San Diego). Any chance he'd make the 1 hr flight from San Diego to Phoenix to give Nick & the team some pointers? I'm sure at the very least they'll talk but I cannot imagine having him hanging around would be a bad thing...???

The flights are hella cheap and it's a 5 hour drive.

Curtis Samuel brings New York state of mind to Ohio State
It looks out of place. The building -- an understatement really to call it that -- is one of a kind with its Gothic, grandiose details and arched entryways and the grassy courtyard inside that stretches the length of a respectable Midwestern backyard. It’s hard to imagine such a thing could be found in the middle of Brooklyn.

Amid the brick apartment buildings and the Italian and Caribbean eateries with their colorful awnings hanging over metal security gates, Erasmus Hall’s campus is a landmark in New York City’s Flatbush neighborhood. The nation’s second oldest high school has been in the same spot since its doors opened in 1786. Eighteen years before Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in their famous duel, the two men joined forces with several of America’s earliest wealthy families to help provide funds for the new school. It became a public institution in 1895, and the large stone building grew steadily to take up nearly a full city block.

“It looks like a castle,” says Erasmus graduate and Ohio State junior Curtis Samuel. “You definitely won’t miss it.”

Samuel is a bit out of place himself, a Brooklyn kid playing football at a blueblood program like Ohio State. New York City is far from the traditional beaten path on the recruiting trail, but that’s where Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer has found a seemingly perfect fit for his versatile, difficult-to-defend H-back position.

Samuel leads the potent Ohio State offense with 15 touchdowns this season -- eight as a runner and seven as a receiver. He’s a big-play threat from anywhere and everywhere. No, you definitely won’t miss him, either.

LUKE FICKELL: OHIO STATE'S DEFENSIVE BACKS WILL BE 'CHALLENGED MORE THAN THEY EVER HAVE' AGAINST MIKE WILLIAMS AND CLEMSON

78367_h.jpg,qitok=RPNdGywU.pagespeed.ce.jTii_4JDCX.jpg

Luke Fickell knows how exceptional Ohio State's cornerbacks are this season. He also is aware what talents like Marshon Lattimore, Gareon Conley and Denzel Ward allow the rest of the nation's fourth-ranked defense to do.

“People say, 'Oh you can do a lot because your corners can cover a lot.' You're right,” Fickell said at Ohio State Fiesta Bowl Media Day last week. “We look them in the face every time we have a meeting and say, 'We do what we do because you guys give us the opportunity.'

“It's not something genius we thought up.”

Lattimore and Conley join unanimous All-American and free safety Malik Hooker near the top of multiple 2017 NFL Draft boards for a reason. Each is fast, has long arms and is exceptional at playing the press-man coverage Chris Ash implemented prior to the 2014 season then Kerry Coombs and Greg Schiano honed even more this year.

And each will face an extremely tall task on New Year's Eve in Phoenix against star wide receiver Mike Williams and the high-powered offense of the Clemson Tigers.

It will be interesting to see how the Clemson OL does against the DL and the Rushman package. If the DL can stop the run and the Rushman pressure Watson I've got to think the back seven will take advantage of that. Our LB skill and speed should also create challenges for Clemson and the secondary will easily be the best they have faced all year. Not saying it will be easy but I think the Silver Bullets will be up to the task.
