Cavs: Snow not the only issue

Cavs might wish for better point guard, but first might try adjusting system

By Brian Windhorst

Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but it has become obvious that before the Cavaliers can become serious contenders, they are going to need to acquire a point guard with offensive skills.
This has not been an easy conclusion to come to, nor one that was decided quickly. This corner of space and countless e-mails and blog entries over the last two years have been dedicated to defending the Cavs' current starting point guard, Eric Snow. And what follows here is not meant to be an indictment of the Cavs' wily veteran, because his role on the team is still important and needed.
Yet the visual and empirical evidence through 26 games is compelling.

CAVALIERS INSIDER

Hughes seeking reduced minutes

Sunday, December 24, 2006 Branson Wright

Plain Dealer Reporter
The right ankle that kept Larry Hughes out of action for 10 consecutive games is not 100 percent and Hughes has asked coach Mike Brown to limit his minutes.
"I'm going to try to take it back a little," Hughes said. "It's not getting any worse but it's not moving as fast as I want it to move, so I'll play less minutes and rest it more during off days and get it to where I can be myself."
Hughes came into Saturday's game playing at least 32 or more minutes in his last five games. He expects that to change.

Cav is a quick study

Well-read Pollard ready for minutes
Tuesday, December 26, 2006 Mary Schmitt Boyer
Plain Dealer Reporter
A Scot Pollard fan recently e-mailed the Plain Dealer to express his displeasure with the fact Pollard hasn't played much for the Cavaliers this season.
"We've seen all his suits," the fan wrote. "What we need is to see him in [Cavs uniform] shorts."
Pollard smiled when told of the e-mail but wanted to make something clear.

[FONT=arial,sans-serif]SPORTS: Cavs' Z finding his O
By Branson Wright

Plain Dealer Reporter

Coach Mike Brown figured there would be an adjustment period with his new offense. It?s an offense, among other things, that requires more movement and reads.

Center Zydrunas Ilgauskas was one of the many players in search of an offensive rhythm under the new program. Now, after a few false starts, Ilgauskas is finally in step.

?He?s using the offense, which is a lot of angles, sealing guys instead of fighting guys,? Brown said. ?He was a little lost because this is a new offense, but I knew as time went along he?d get better. Z?s been more aggressive and we?re getting him the ball more.?

Cavs win their 2nd in a row tonight and improve to 4-8 away from the Q. Didn't get to watch this one as Abe is in Idaho now visiting family right now but will be back in Ohio tomm. night. The King didn't have a stellar shooting night, scoring 27 and adding 9 boards. A good win on the road to gain some confidence even if it was against the once again shitty hawks. Hopefully it's a sign of things to come. Home Fri v redd and the bucks then @ chi. sat night. Jan is extremely busy-- 16 games v. some tough teams. Abe's prediction: 11-5.

Cavs find home in Atlanta

Tight defense on Joe Johnson yields another rare road win

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

ATLANTA - In Ohio, the Cavaliers are pretty hard to beat. In Georgia, they are unstoppable. As for the rest of the union, well, that's a work in progress.
Piecing together a solid road effort, the Cavs hammered a wounded Atlanta Hawks team 89-76 on Wednesday. It was the second time this month the Cavs have exited Philips Arena with a victory, which is their good news. The bad is that those are their only two road wins in December, and the Cavs (16-11) have exhausted their schedule in Atlanta for the season.

Cavaliers game day

Ankle problem lingers

Hughes reluctant to talk about it, but injury has affected his offensive output

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

ATLANTA - It's no secret that ankle injuries linger, and no longer a secret that Larry Hughes' is lingering, too.
The Cavaliers guard has avoided the topic over the last several weeks, but the high ankle sprain that he suffered last month is still bothering him. It has shown up mostly on the offensive end, where he's been limited to mostly shooting jumpers and mostly shooting them poorly.
Last week, after he re-tweaked the ankle against the Detroit Pistons, Cavs coach Mike Brown said he needed to reduce Hughes' minutes until he gets in better shape.

Central reasserts its rep

Every division team over .500; Cavs face back-to-back against two of them

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - There were several weeks of ridicule as it was lumped with its lagging Eastern Conference brethren, but the oft-heralded NBA Central Division has finally started rounding into form.
The Cavaliers, a full-fledged member, are about to head into the teeth of the surge. With a two-game winning streak of their own, the Cavs start a weekend Central Division back-to-back that will be a litmus test.

Gilbert a quick study

After initial stumbles, Cavs owner builds strong team while sticking to principles

By Terry Pluto

Beacon Journal sports columnist

LIVONIA, MICH. - Three weeks after buying the Cavaliers, Dan Gilbert fired coach Paul Silas.

The team had lost four games in a row, and there were some unhappy players, but the Cavs were still 34-30 on March 20, 2005, when a rookie owner dumped a veteran head coach.

Cavs fumble around for ID

Defense is driving or points a problem?
Friday, December 29, 2006 Jodie Valade
Plain Dealer Reporter
Looking at it positively, at long last the Cavaliers are becoming the defense-first team coach Mike Brown has sought since he took charge last year.
But when viewing the past five games by glass-half-empty spectacles, the Cavaliers have turned to defense out of necessity when their offense has suddenly evaporated. Four times in their past five tries, the Cavaliers have failed to crack 90 points. They averaged 39.3-percent shooting in those contests. Twice in their past five games, they have managed to score only in the lowly 70s. In all five games, they averaged a positively defensive-minded 86.2 points

Defense always the focus for Brown
BOB FINNAN, Morning Journal Writer
12/29/2006

CLEVELAND -- The Cavaliers' defensive numbers are top shelf, among the very best in the NBA. Coach Mike Brown, however, is still concerned with momentary breakdowns that occur from time to time. They are ranked third in the league in points allowed (91.6), fourth in field-goal percentage (44.1) and second in defensive rebounding percentage.

CLEVELAND ? Donyell Marshall?s outside shot started falling before the game and never stopped. Marshall scored a season-high 29 points ? 21 on three-pointers ? and LeBron James scored 32 in his final game as a 21-year-old, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 109-99 win over Milwaukee last night, snapping the Bucks? six-game winning streak.

Tough loss tonite in Chicago, but they are at least showing life, after that dreadful stretch.

It was also nice to see LBJ in the post for a change. We need to continue to see that tho, or even get him the ball on the elbow like the Bulls used to do with Jordan where he always hit his patent fade away jumper.
