Cavs 06-07 season thread

i don't see either of webber or sheed being able to handle Z down low if the cavs can feed him enough.

sheed will camp at the 3 point line all night because gooden is woeful defensively away from the basket.

the big mismatch that i don't like is the notion of Pavs trying to hang with Rip Hamilton all night.

Larry did it all last year during the series...

Sasha has become a pretty good defender so I am hoping that he takes care of business...

Honestly on paper the matchups don't look like they are the favorite by a lot, but the thing is that unless we pick up the level of play that we are playing at it will be very hard to win games in Detroit...

LBJ is going to need a huge series...

I'll give them a lot of credit, they showed some real grit by not folding after that ridiculous comeback. Thank God Marshall finally found his shot. Unfortunately, Browns inadequacies reared their ugly head again in the 3rd. Hopefully they step up their game for the Pistons. I'm not real confident at all going in to this series, but at least we made the next step into the conference finals.

if it's the normal starting 5, then hughes is on billups, which leaves Pavs on Rip. While Pavs did a decent job on Carter, Hamilton is much quicker, which is going to be a problem, especially when they run him off of curls and screens. I wouldn't be surprised if detroit pulled sheed and webber out a lot and made Z and gooden defend them away from the hoop.

Cleveland Cavaliers LeBron James and Drew Gooden celebrate the Cavs huge first half lead against the New Jersey Nets in game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinal playoffs on Friday May 18, 2007, in East Rutherford, New Jersey, at Continental Airlines Arena. The Cavs won 88-72. More Photos
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. And, too, the greatest moment in 15 years.
The Cavaliers had a rocky Friday evening in trying to close out the New Jersey Nets. Then again, it has been a rocky decade or two, so what are a few hair-raising moments on the way to a chance at a conference title?
The Cavs got up big, as in their biggest lead of the slugfest series, prompting plenty of rejoicing. They gave it back big, which prompted many timeouts and soul-searching moments. But, in perhaps a fitting microcosm of this zany Cavs season, in the end they came out smelling of fresh-cut roses.
A huge first quarter and an inspiring fourth -- don't save room on the season highlight film for the rest -- got the Cavs to an 88-72 victory and a 4-2 series victory and sent the Nets fishing.

LeBron gets vital help from bench

By Terry Pluto

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Cavs win!
It was that simple, yet that hard.
Cavs win 88-72 in New Jersey. Cavs win the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs in six games. Cavs win a postseason rematch with the Detroit Pistons, starting Monday in Auburn Hills. Cavs win in perhaps the most improbable way.
After the game, coach Mike Brown seemed stunned, relieved and so thankful for what happened on this Friday night.
``You have to give our guys a lot of credit,'' he said.
The coach deserves some, too.
He watched his team score 32 points in the first quarter, then 29 in the next two quarters. He sweated through an eight-point third quarter and through LeBron James spending nearly seven minutes of that quarter on the bench with four fouls.

Cavaliers game day

Veterans Marshall, Jones turn heroic

Duo delivers for Brown by holding back Kidd, scoring crucial points

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - With the arena empty and quiet, Donyell Marshall and Damon Jones were out on the floor nearly two hours before tipoff Friday.
They had been the forgotten veterans.
They ended up being two of the Cavaliers' unexpected heroes in their 88-72 victory over the New Jersey Nets in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
Knowing they both might be needed for their outside shooting, they arrived early to get ready. Each ended up delivering in a different way.
Marshall, who celebrated his 34th birthday Friday, had been 3-of-15 shooting in the series after going a miserable 0-of-7 in Game 5. That's not to mention his sprained ankle in Game 3, which hurt hismobility.

Fans alter plans to cheer at Q

By George M. Thomas

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - The Cavaliers found themselves in hostile territory Friday night in East Rutherford, N.J., but a large contingent of the wine-and-gold faithful traveled with them in spirit.
An estimated 5,000 fans turned out to watch the Cavs on Q-Vision at Quicken Loans Arena and cheer them on as LeBron James led them to an 88-72 victory and their first appearance in the Eastern Conference finals in 15 years.
The team opened The Q to give fans a place to watch together, but it was more than that. For regulars at Cavs games, it all proved to be a familiar setting. The house band, Catwalkblue, jammed on the main concourse as small children danced to their riffs and beats.

Cavs take out Nets, reach conference final
Saturday, May 19, 2007
BY Mike Popovich
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. The Cavaliers never let the pressure get to them.

Nothing fazed them Friday night. Even when they came close to blowing a 22-point lead, they didn't panic. Instead, they regrouped and advanced.

The Cavs held off New Jersey, 88-72, at Continental Airlines Arena to reach the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 1992. They will face Detroit in a rematch of last year's seven-game semifinal thriller. Game 1 is Monday at The Palace.

Not many teams have to hold off opponents in games won by 16 points. But that is what the Cavs did to eliminate the Nets, four games to two.

Cleveland led by 22 in the first half and saw a 15-point halftime lead cut to 1 when New Jersey went on a 22-8 run in the third quarter. At no point, though, did the Cavs trail.

"It was important for us to stay calm," Cavs forward LeBron James said, wearing a relieved smile. "We wanted to try to put the pressure back on them, and we were able to reverse it.

Nets' rally impressive, but falls short

After trailing by 22, New Jersey gets close, but can't take the lead

Saturday, May 19, 2007 Mary Schmitt Boyer

Plain Dealer Reporter
East Rutherford, N.J.- The New Jersey Nets could not get over the hump.
They trimmed the Cavaliers' 22-point first-half lead to one in the third quarter, but they could never take the lead. As a result, they lost Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, 88-72, and the best-of-seven series, 4-2.
"In the first half, our guys dug ourselves a heck of a hole," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "Our guys fought their tails [off] in the third quarter on both ends and then we ran out of gas or whatever the case may be. You have to give them credit. They got a huge lift from Donyell Marshall off the bench. We probably had to expend so much energy that we didn't have a whole lot left. We just ran out of gas and couldn't score or get any stops."

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
Cavaliers' subs prove to be game's heroes

Saturday, May 19, 2007 Mary Schmitt Boyer

Plain Dealer Reporter
East Rutherford, N.J.- The Cavaliers' bench picked a good time to play big.
Donyell Marshall hit six 3-pointers, Daniel Gibson hit two more and had a key steal, Anderson Varejao had six rebounds, and Eric Snow and Damon Jones played tough defense to help the Cavs hold off the New Jersey Nets, 88-72, Friday night in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Continental Airlines Arena.
With the victory, the Cavs claimed the best-of-seven series, 4-2, and advanced to the Eastern Conference finals against the Detroit Pistons. That series starts Monday at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Mich.

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
Everything LeBron is every thing to Cavaliers

Saturday, May 19, 2007 Bill Livingston
Plain Dealer Columnist
East Ruther ford, N.J.- This was before LeBron James found the air that was sweet and pure, up near the roof of his game.
This was when the pen-wielding, camera-toting, tape-recorder-holding media mob had moved to the front of the cramped Cavaliers' locker room, near the dressing spot of Damon Jones.
"You're getting in my locker," Jones said to James, who commands attention both before the game, during it, and afterward.
You got plenty of room, little man," James retorted.
The problem had been getting room for the biggest man, the sun around whom most things Cavalier orbit. For LeBron James is the author of the franchise's turnaround, the apple of all witness eyes, and the actual subject of the messianic slogan for this year's playoffs, Rise Up!
Friday night, he had bookend quarters that changed the game and ended the second round series in six games, as the Cavs eliminated New Jersey, 88-72.

Gibson vs. Conley

I never got to see much of Gibson when he was playing at Texas but how much better was Conley as a PG than Gibson? I know that there are not many pure PGs like Conley but just wanted how much better he was as a leader/penetrator. I would think that Gibson was a better shot but do not know that for a fact.
