Unless BYU decides to relinquish its television rights for its home football games, the Cougars likely will not join the Big East, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.
The Cougars have been in discussions with the Big East for weeks about joining the league. However, negotiations between the Big East and BYU have stalled.
"I doubt BYU will happen," a college football industry source told CBSSports.com. "They are being extremely unreasonable all of a sudden. This is one reason why they did not get into the Big 12. Their general counsel (lawyers) is a piece of work."
BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe and coach Bronco Mendenhall are said to favor a move to the Big East, but BYU President Cecil Samuelson and the school's general counsel haven't been as receptive. That is unless the Cougars can retain their home television rights, which is unheard of for a conference school.
If the Big East does not have the television rights to BYU's home games, it would affect the Big East's upcoming negotiations for its new media rights deal with ESPN, NBC-Comcast and/or Fox.
There are no schools in any of the BCS AQ conferences that retain their home television rights, only those schools that are independents.

Muck;2043813; said:People like to say that the Pac will never let BYU join because it is prejudiced against religious institutions.
Poppycock.
The Pac wants nothing to do with BYU because of the school's (and fans) history of flagrant racism & it's egomaniacal delusions of grandeur.
S-D-S-U! Haha, I hope that we get invited. It'd be such a boost for the budget.Negotiations between the Big East and Brigham Young have broken off and the school will not be joining the conference, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.
The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the conference and school have not been making their talks public.
"BYU to the Big East is dead. It's not going to happen," the person said.

One of Wales' concerns in choosing a college is the level of competition he will face. In an interview with Steve Jones from the Kentucky Rivals.com site Cats Illustrated (the article is premium content but the quote is provided below with permission), Wales said his main question for the Louisville coaches concerned which conference the Cardinals would call home.
"My main question for them was, what conference are they going to be in?" he said. "And also if (Charlie) Strong and them would take a (job with a) bigger team in the next four years, whether I will be able to count on them to be there the next four years. I felt they have always kept it real with me and looked me in my eyes and told me the truth.
What was Carter's response for which league he thought the Cardinals would land in? "He said they would be in the Big 12, no doubt," Wales said.
There have already been reports that Temple coaches were telling recruits that the Owls were headed to the Big East, so any reports of what coaches are telling recruits should be taken with a grain of salt. Still, there's no reason to doubt Wales is telling the truth about what was told to him by Carter. If that's the case, it provides a little insight into the mindset of the Louisville athletic department about its future in the Big East if its coaches feel confident enough to tell recruits it is heading to the Big East. Then again, it also wouldn't be the first time a coach has told a recruit what he thinks he wants to hear, either.

UTEP Athletic Director Bob Stull said Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference and moving closer to a merger in all sports. Stull addressed the media during a press conference Thursday called to announced head football coach Mike Price would be returning next season. Price is one of the most successful coaches in school history but has posted six consecutive losing seasons.
Price was talking to reporters about the schedule the Miners would be playing when Stull interjected and offered a conference realignment update. Full video of the press conference was posted on the 600-AM (KROD).
?There?s a transition in the league that?s happening right now,? Stull said.
?That again, the Mountain West and Conference USA are basically merging. Th initial thought was football only, but it?s moving more toward all sports at this point.
?It will be done by the end of this year. There was a 90-day window that we thought we could even get transitioned to next year. But right now what?s happening is all those people talking about going to the Big East, there?s been a lot of obviously issues on that happening, so we don?t really know who?s in and who?s out at this point.
?I can tell you that merger will happen with the Mountain West. Unless something really dramatic happens, we will do that. And there?s a fairly good chance we?ll be playing a lot back into the west side. Especially if we lose SMU and Houston to the Big East, if they go there, then obviously most of the Texas schools are gone and it makes a lot of sense for us to play New Mexico, Las Vegas, etc. But that?s still speculative and in process.?

Somebody is jealous. Those teams just scream Big East. I don't know why no one thought of adding them before.
