This is a question for everyone(including myself): why did we think this offensive line would play better when they were so bad at it last year? They then lost a 1st round LT, a RT who was a mid round pick but is now starting and looking damn good in year 1, and a late round pick at OC. They were then replaced by 2 average OTs and a good but young OC.
It’s also pretty obvious that Frye has next to no say in the run game as the RG coordinator. Because theres just no way I can believe that the UCLA offense he ran is in any way the same as what OSU is putting on the field. And that UCLA rushing success was done with much lesser talent as well

I can’t remember from the time I started watching Buckeye football as a wee lad a worse rushing attack than the last two years. A staple of tOSU football has always been the running game and linebacker play, but I digress as both have regressed under Day.

I had high hopes when Frye came in based on his resume, but the results so far are cause for concern. While last year was not good, this year is beyond bad.

Is it the scheme, is it the play calling, is it the coaching, is it just the lack of talent, or some combination of all of these.

I have to say i believe Day’s run game play calling is abysmal. I’m no play calling wizard and I can tell you that 95% of the time on second and long that we are going to run. Add to this a line that does not fire off the ball, isn’t aware of who to block, is anything but physical or nasty, and rarely if ever gets to the second level and you have a recipe for the disaster that we are currently seeing.

But hey, what do i know.

Buddy 2003 and 2004 still seems worse than now.

1999 was far worse - it didn't have anything close to the passing game to play off of either. 2000 was marginally better but still not good.

Averaged 166 yds per game in 1999, we’re at about 130 a game for this year.

Wiley, Wells and Coombs vs Trevyon, Miyan, and Chip with Hayden and Pryor MIA. Who you want in your backfield.

The 2nd group and its not close.

Different era, far different offense. The other key part is neither offensive line could generate much of a push, at least this current offensive line can somewhat pass protect. Moherman and Bellisari took a beating in 1999.

For sure, the sad thing here is we have the backfield talent. We should be able to both physically pound the ball, as well as, hit with speed.

I think McCord is doing a great job with the lack of a ground game to support him. This team would be flat out dangerous if the Oline and run play calling would step up.

I said it in the game thread, we saw yesterday why Henderson is the 1st back on the field in most situations. He's a step above and takes unnecessary flak because he is always looking for a seam in a zone-based blocking scheme. He just hasn't had seams to hit sometimes. Yes this sometimes means the bounce to the outside is the RIGHT call and not necessarily a failure of the offensive line either - teams LOVE playing gap defense against a zone scheme to disrupt it.

In 1999, the offense is run based to set up the pass, with a vast majority of that off of play action.

In 2023, the offense is pass based with runs to offset, but also set up play action.

The days of running games outweighing the passing game is likely gone for at least the tenure of this coaching staff...and given how the recruiting is going, I doubt we'll never see that "super strong running game" ever again unless the QB is the super mobile type where the RPO is really an option to run it again. In 4 of the last 6 seasons, it's not really been the case (Haskins, Stroud, Stroud, McCord)....that would help, but you can't force that part either, some guys just aren't gifted like Barrett and Fields were in running the ball.

Would it help if everything came together in the running game? Certainly. But the big part is achieving balance between running and passing. Even if it's only getting 3 yards per carry, you'll take that because the passing game can be superior.

This offense (and really this team) isn't built to run the ball as its main offensive mover, and that's not going to change.

I see Alabama struggling in the run game as well this year. Good for them that they have a QB who can run.

I don’t think it has to be an either or proposition when it comes to run/pass and being good at one and so so at the other. Teams can be balanced, other teams are, and there’s no reason why we can’t be. I did like the throw back/misdirection we saw later in the game off the run action.

If the RB recruiting class stays in tact and Dallan and Pryor stay the backfield will once again be extremely talented. If the running game continues to backslide it will be interesting to see if we can continue to bring in the talent.

If there’s one thing a Saban led team can do, it’s run the ball. They’ve had some pedestrian QBs in the past who’ve won(McElroy, McCarron, Coker, etc) but they always had a great run game led by some big uglies up front who imposed their will on the entire defense! Every member of the defense got punched in the mouth. OSU doesnt have guys that are nasty like that. And they also don’t have maulers that can create space. It’s like the ball is hiked and the OL is moving horizontal and then backwards

Referencing yesterday’s Bama/A&M game 26 carries for 23 yds for Bama. Lost 8 yds on sacks. Yeah Nick going to be having someone’s ass.

But, you hit on the take of the lack of physicality and nastiness on the Buckeyes Oline. Been missing for awhile now.

Bama O-line development has been embarrassing for the their recruiting the last few years as well
