This offense definitely has issues in short yardage, but the team was very impressive during the last drive, and the offensive coaching should be recognized for that.

Running 15 plays in 85 seconds is almost unheard of. There were 7 incomplete passes, 1 debatable intentional grounding that gave ND their only sack, 1 spiked ball, 5 completed passes (4 for first downs and 1 where Stover got out of bounds), and 1 unforgettable 1-yard run by Chip. The clock only ran during the 15 plays and briefly after the 4 first downs.

The execution was impressive. Virtually no wasted time with substitutions, alignment, or getting the play in. And when Egbuka caught the first down at the 1 on the third and 19 play, watch how Fleming near the goal line was immediately indicating a spike and everybody quickly got into position (linemen running 20 yards). The clock only went from 9 seconds after the catch to 7 seconds after the spike. That allowed time for two plays as long as the first one was a pass into the end zone.

Great points. Definitely felt that sense of urgency that's easy to overlook in the heat of the moment.

Overall I liked how the offense responded. Started out shaky and ND definitely made OSU earn it, but they responded well. The penalty on Fryar was the turning point in the game. Regardless of it being a good or bad call, OSU was starting to move the ball consistently and find openings while ND doubled MHJr. It felt like the matchup last year when it was close but OSU started to impose their will on a tired defense. Script got flipped though after that drive was killed.

The Raiders just converted a 3-and-1 with a quick slant through the middle to Devontae Adams. I don't know if OSU can add plays to the book at this point, but I wander if they could try it. Surprisingly, I can't remember the Buckeyes running that play over the years even with their lethal passing attacks.

I'd love the Tressel shot against TTUN with Ginn in this offense. Go big pull everyone up hit them over the top. They tried it last year but with Stover which makes sense but it'd be more comfortable with Marvin or Emeka

Hitting a play like that a few times makes the linebackers react a step later when you go heavy

He's not wrong

Maybe. I guess they don't have that sure-fire play you know they'll run, but they seem to be happy using RPOs a lot or those split field pass plays where you read the LB or safety and pick the side based on that.

I completely forgot that this week is the bye, which is for the best based on MHJr and other guys getting beat up, but it'll be interesting to see how they continue to build game plans. Keep working on the OL and perimeter blocking, they'll have the 'poor man's' Mr. Inside/Mr. Outside in Chip and Trey with pass concepts attached if the defense is creeping into the box.

I know Zac Smith is well liked here so I thought I’d bring something up they said today.

Both him and Kris made a comment that they don’t want a tough offense. They would prefer an explosive one and I thought that was a good point.

It’s driving me crazy that we insist on throwing out 2-3 TEs, heavy running backs and shit even a FB or an extra OL.

Their point was (and I agree with), that toughness is something you need on defense. However there’s no place for being stubborn for the sake of toughness on offense.

I agree with them. I want the aggressive explosive offense and could care less about lining up in the I formation to get 1-2 yards.

Austin Ward made a correlation that Ryan Day sort of has a Marty Mcfly issue (being called chicken or in this case being called soft) and it sure feels like it at this point. We really are meant to be a passing offense that’s wide open and gets the ball to our WRs. The funny thing is, if we did that more affectively we would run the ball better anyways.

This.

Right, wrong or indifferent your identity is as a passing team that uses it's offense to protect it's defense. You have the best WR recruiter in the game and the best WR room in CFB. You have stud QB's and skill position players falling out of your ass. You have an OL that good enough at pass pro.

Then throw the motherfucker.

1st down, 2nd down,3rd, 4th..whatever. Throw it. Have a play that you say, if we are getting beat, it's going to be because someone stopped this one magnificent sumbitch of a play right here and make that one involved MHjr.

What you don't do is try and get cute on every 3rd and short and end up outsmarting yourself with some WR jet sweep bullshit on 4th and game.

It makes all the sense in the world to play with multiple TEs or a FB while breaking in two new offensive tackles. I do expect that to decrease after the bye week though.
