Part of this was the very vanilla running scheme employed. With IU primarily playing to stop the run, all of them were running into 5 on 7 boxes - meaning 5 blockers against 7 defenders. While it's easy to say Tre sucks, when you get the ball and look for daylight in a zone blocking scheme, since that is what Ohio State primarily employs, it will look like he's "dancing" and not being decisive when there literally isn't anything there.

Some of that can be fixed by better blocking by the 5 blockers he has. Some of that can be fixed by varying formations and having a more effective downfield passing game - and I think Chip benefited from that in the 2nd half when the offense was slightly more open.

There were the aforementioned 4 runs - those 4 runs show that he's healthy again, so there is that as a takeaway.

agree with all of that. I hope it plays out that way but for me personally chip and miyan look way more decisive and "seem" to have better vision and this is going back to last year. but im a novice at best and i am always wrong on these things, Trey most def doesnt suck and I dont put him in the lydell ross camp as i have seen mentioned on SM.

That they do and I have tempered expectations for Week 1 every year (despite my outlandish 49-17 prediction, though the point differential was not terribly far off). I hate it, but they really don't start the year off well. For illustrative purposes in the last 10 years:

2013: Beat a measly Buffalo team 40-20 and struggled
2014: 34-17 against Navy and looked bad under new coach UFM, followed by a loss against VT...we know how that season ended, but point is the start was horrible
2015: An aberration where we spank VT 42-24 on the road Week 1, but in Week 3 only beat Northern Illinois 20-13.
2016: No contest, we destroyed everyone before conference play, even Oklahoma at their place.
2017: The score of 49-21 against Indiana looked better than the actual performance, then lost to Oklahoma at home.
2018: Beat Oregon State 77-31, but we looked awful and at the time the other OSU went 2-10...so yeah.
2019: Beat a shitty Florida Atlantic team 45-21, looked bad doing it.
2020: Beat the Corn badly but that is a throwaway year to be sure with covid.
2021: Beat Minny 45-31 but I will tell you from being at that game, there was serious concern until about the final 5 minutes.
2022: Beat ND 21-10 at home, but struggled all game as we can vividly recall and especially on offense. ND ends up ranked way lower than they started (I know, shocker)

I would bitch about it more and it is interesting to analyze the trend, but a season is about progression and where you end up. As is said in the video above, fans have amnesia about Week 1...I am not one of those fans despite my profanities during the game in the privacy of my own home.
Only disagreement I have is with 2019 FAU. We were beating the absolute shit out of them but took our foot off the pedal. We came out of the gates dominating that year

@exhawg How long is 'normal' to get a line to play together/coordinated?.. with due respect to their inexperience & youth

I see plays of individual talent out there... but watching other teams like TX and Bama... those fellas are in sync already

did you watch Texas game?
Bama's issue isn't the line.... the OL is trying to figure out what the hell is going on behind them

I'd disagree - a huge issue with Bama right now is their OL. Their pass protection is awful - outside of Latham, there isn't much there. USF embarrassed them rushing the passer last week. Ole Miss has a chance to land a death blow to them tomorrow....2 losses and not even out of September would be something I didn't see happening.

“There were things said in our O-line room to get us going," Jackson said. "But at the end of the day it’s all about effort and execution, and I feel like we improved a lot. But there’s still a lot more that we can improve on in the following weeks.”

Frye called for a “more violent” group leading into the contest against the Hilltoppers, one that could improve upon the team’s abysmal 2-for-8 mark through two contests on third downs of 3 yards or less.

“Firing off the ball, as an O-line coach he’s still going to tell you to go a little harder,” Jackson said. “It’s a message Coach Frye always says to us, but it’s a huge point of emphasis in terms of going as hard as you can to strain as hard as you can.

This offense definitely has issues in short yardage, but the team was very impressive during the last drive, and the offensive coaching should be recognized for that.

Running 15 plays in 85 seconds is almost unheard of. There were 7 incomplete passes, 1 debatable intentional grounding that gave ND their only sack, 1 spiked ball, 5 completed passes (4 for first downs and 1 where Stover got out of bounds), and 1 unforgettable 1-yard run by Chip. The clock only ran during the 15 plays and briefly after the 4 first downs.

The execution was impressive. Virtually no wasted time with substitutions, alignment, or getting the play in. And when Egbuka caught the first down at the 1 on the third and 19 play, watch how Fleming near the goal line was immediately indicating a spike and everybody quickly got into position (linemen running 20 yards). The clock only went from 9 seconds after the catch to 7 seconds after the spike. That allowed time for two plays as long as the first one was a pass into the end zone.
