RYAN DAY NOT READY TO NAME STARTERS AT OFFENSIVE TACKLE OR CENTER YET, BUT PLEASED WITH PROGRESS: “I THINK WE HAVE A CHANCE TO HAVE A REALLY GOOD O-LINE”

While Ohio State has started to settle in on which offensive linemen will play which positions this season, Ryan Day isn’t ready to name a starter at either offensive tackle spot or at center just yet.

Jimmy Simmons and Tegra Tshabola have been practicing at left tackle after starting preseason camp at right tackle, while the opposite switch has occurred with Josh Fryar and Luke Montgomery. Day said Monday that he expects Simmons and Tshabola to remain on the left side and Fryar and Montgomery to remain on the right side now that the season opener is less than three weeks away.
“I don't think we’ve made a final decision on that. But if I had to project that, I would say yes,” Day said. “There hasn't been a lot of moving parts since we made that move. So I mean, we're kind of settling into it.”
Simmons took all of the first-team reps at left tackle during Friday’s practice – the last one that was open to the media this preseason – and Day indicated Monday that Simmons is the frontrunner right now to be Ohio State’s starting left tackle. However, he wasn’t ready to name Simmons the outright starter yet.
“I think he's had some really good practices. And he's shown that he can be the starting left tackle,” Day said. “He has not won that job yet. But he has shown traits that make us believe he can be that guy.”
Day gave a more open-ended response when asked if Fryar is the frontrunner to start at right tackle, suggesting Montgomery remains in the thick of that competition even though Fryar ran with the first team Friday and Montgomery is a true freshman.
“He's somebody that, he's kind of gone back and forth a little bit, he's got flexibility that way,” Day said of Fryar. “For Josh, he feels comfortable playing on the right side, and so is Luke. And so, like we talked about last week, we've looked at who's going to be the best moving forward for the long term.”

Interesting, I did not see Tegra on the left side. But I don't care really, just put together the best OL possible. Glad to hear Simmons is looking like a starter and that Montgomery is competing for a job. I think Montgomery was vastly overlooked in his recruiting class for whatever reason, same goes for Padilla but I just think he's a year or two away with physical development.

I tire of the year after year, "we're not sure" who is going to start routine. I would hate to be in a profession where I felt I needed to lie all the time. One of the things I like about Knowles is that he is a straight shooter.

The only thing worse than that, is the fact that people haven’t caught on it after all these years. There’s a whole army platoon on Twitter ready to ride on Kyle McCord and Ryan Day because he hasn’t named a starter yet. “Ryan Day is botching this QB battle!” and “What has Kyle been doing these last few years? Why hasn’t he separated himself yet?” are two popular thoughts right now.

How do longtime fans of Ohio State football not know how to identify coach-speak yet? It seems like our coaches speak it more than most.

Identifying coach speak and liking it are two different things.

Total hearsay, but rumor is that Brown is doing better than McCord, and it is kind of getting awkward. That Brown will most likely overtake McCord. He threw the name Zach Smith in there, so the credibility factor went down the shoot. Sometimes there is smoke with some of the material, despite the source.

Anybody hear a similar report?

Idk, last year we pretty much knew our starting 5 and the "battles" mentioned by the coaches were for depth in the two-deep. This year, really everything is up for grabs outside the guards and I believe that there are probably some tight position battles. That is what happens after the departures of PJ, Dawand and Wypler...really wish Wypler would have come back to narrow down the uncertainty (aside from the fact that I think he would have improved his draft status). Not having certainty on the OL is an uneasy feeling, but we have a lot of guys to evaluate on a day-to-day bases (then throw in a brand new duo of Simmons and Cutler transferring in) and a starting 5 doesn't happen at the beginning of summer camp. Plus we have to establish depth.

That said, I hope the coaches know who the starting 5 are in a week or so even if they don't announce it publicly. Cohesion is crucial on OL and while we start off with a soft schedule, obviously we want to be gelling well by Week 1 and it is not a position that you want to rotate at.

On the QB battle, it is interesting and I would imagine it is very real. But Day will make the right call there and we'll have two very good QBs that should be game ready no matter who wins the job.

That’s solely a Zach Smith report. That’s not being reported anywhere else.

Not speaking to the validity of it. Just saying that’s where it originated.

Yep.... he's kind of a wackadoo and probably wants clicks. But you never know.
He also went from saying that Tate would never play while at OSU, to saying hes going to start this year. I used to like Smith early on in his podcast when he told recruiting stories. But now he’s just a really bad hot take journalist, who interjects his failed marriage in between takes.

But what I’ve also heard(not from Smith ) is that Philbin has been helping Frye with the OL. That’s actually coming from Frye. That should make us feel a little better without getting to see them first hand
