r/CFB is fun right now. DBFIA is convinced that Ryan Day hired the investigation firm.
Hope he did
LOL. Chuck Pagano on Pat McAfee just admitted he'd never heard about the "no advanced scouting" rule in the NCAA and that they were advanced scouting at Miami when he was on Butch Davis' staff when they started their run.
There's a real non-zero chance Wyld Stallyn never thought for a minute if it was allowed or not.

He’s either a monumental idiot for doing such a bad job hiding his cheating, or for not even looking into whether or not it was against the rules. “I’m such a genius, why hasn’t anyone else thought of doing this?”

What's mind blowing, is the amount of fans (mostly on the scUM side) who don't seem to think how vital his info is in game and believe you just "play harder, execute".

If you gave me, even a mid tier school defense like Purdue, but still has D1 athletes, a binder of signals that tip me off to ...

- Formation
- Route structure(s)
- Run kills
- (pre snap) checks
- protections
- Run/pass ratios (which honestly you could get from true, legal scouting)

... I'm going to look like a god damn defensive prophet. The 2nd coming of Wade Phillips X2.
There is no "Well, you just have to execute and out hustle them". It doesn't work that way unless you're facing Florida A&M. MAYBE.

G.I.Joe said 'knowing is half the battle'. It's really not, it's the majority of the battle when you know your opponents moves.

Who's on their board? At some point you would think the grown-ups will want to intervene to salvage a bit of their image
No idea, but I think there was some grumbling about how Ono handled the grad student strike. tsun isn't Cincy. He won't be able to cover up his incompetence by making a bunch pie in the sky promises. tsun already has everything, and they aren't going to fall for his "I'm taking you to the promised land" shtick the way the juggalos did.

Saw a theory on reddit on how the third party firm got access to the school’s ‘network’.

What if ‘master of espionage’ Conner Pony created a shared document on the school’s corporate OneDrive/Dropbox/etc account. Then shared it with various coaches. Then casually forgot to remove a former employee or coach, who then turned that access over to a third party investigatative firm funded by Jim Stapleton.

Based on how this whole scandal has seemed like a poorly written spy mystery, this is too hilariously on brand for me not to believe this is how the information got out.

If anyone did this it's almost certainly Vegas. If it was Day, good for him.

Vegas notices that professional gamblers are betting big on tsun, maybe even an abnormal amount on second half bets. They're going to look into it.
"In Vegas, everybody's gotta watch everybody else. Since the players are looking to beat the casino, the dealers are watching the players. The box men are watching the dealers. The floor men are watching the box men. The pit bosses are watching the floor men. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The casino manager is watching the shift bosses. I'm watching the casino manager. And the eye-in-the-sky is watching us all."

Yea nobody "illegally hacked" into scUMs network, like DFBIA is crying. It's 100% likely something like this, dipshit clearly didn't even attempt to cover his tracks, no reason to believe he put any major cyber security around the electronic files.

You really only need to know four things and it’s an unbelievable advantage.

When you’re on defense: is this a run, or is this a pass?

Does it mean you’ll stop it every single time? No, but does it mean you’ll be in the right defense a vast majority of the time. Absolutely.

Anyone who says that’s not a massive advantage is lying or a moron.

When you’re on offense: is this man or is this zone?

Does it mean you’ll have success on every play? No. Does it mean you can call the correct route concepts a vast majority of the time? Absolutely.

Anyone who says that isn’t a massive advantage is lying or a moron.

And to a long ago point, knowing when to call your man coverage beating route concepts increases the chances that you’re going to put a player on the other team in a really bad spot and take advantage of a mistake, like slipping and falling down when you stress the hell out of their safeties in man coverage because the defense is hoping the risk is rewarded by doing something the offense wasn’t expecting.

James Franklin brought up a scenario where, in 4th and short, Michigan was in cover 2 to defend the deep pass they called.

Even just knowing those four things about what the other team is doing 50% of the time in the game is cheating on a massive scale and hugely impactful on the fairness and outcomes of the game. It is not up for debate.

And just because we have to say this every single time for the mouth breathers who keep saying stealing signs isn’t illegal, it’s how the signs were stolen the was illegal—in person pre-scouting and electronic recording.

This

Nothing needed to be "hacked" there is no "espionage" or any shady activity. Stallions is a dumbass who used a public venmo for all the ticket purchases, nobody outside of the unhinged is believing that he took the steps to put some lock down cyber security on this shit.

Given how sloppy the rest of Connor's operation was I think its likely that
  1. Stallions setup a server or drive that his 'scouts' could submit videos to
  2. He did not have good security setup on this and it was probably 'anyone with a link can open this'
  3. One of his scouts was contacted by the firm, paid (see Auerbach), and the link was shared
  4. The firm could see the users in the database which included staff and is where WaPo is getting this "maintained and accessed" by Michigan staff verbiage
