Knowles seems supremely confident. I'm not sure what to make of it, but I hope they reward that confidence.

I think he's marveling at the amount of talent on one team, that he's never seen before in his career. I'd dare say this team has more talent on it than all of his defenses he's coaches his whole career. Almost like working IT for start ups and middle sized company's for most of your career, and then you get hired by Google or Apple. He has backups who would be his best players at OSU lite and Duke(Teradja Mitchell, Jaden McKenzie and Cam Martinez would be stars at those programs)

As many have said, we don’t need this defense to be great, just good. I think they’ll give up 2 or 3 chunk plays to ND, via an occasional missed assignment or by being victimized by a good play call while executing a very aggressive defensive play call.

And I can live with that, although it will suck at the time. What I won’t be able to accept is a Buckeye defense that can’t get off the field most of the time on third down; or one that can’t stop an offense that is trying to run the ball down its throat. But I’m not expecting either of those things to be true this year.

Can't wait to finally watch this defense. I'm just happy we finally (presumably) have an identity. Play fast and aggressive and because of it you will probably give up a big play here and there. That's fine. Drove me insane the past couple years how we had the worst of both worlds---where you'd play safe and conservative but also somehow give up big plays.
That'll happen when the DC is over his skies and doesn't know how to scheme or run an entire defense. And also the defense not being able to communicate because everyone seemed to be freestyling to make up for inept coaching.
I have the utmost respect for Coombs, but geez that defense was bad, and I can only imagine how bad it would've been without Barnes

I always feel like Christmas Eve this time of year. With Knowles and the totally revamped defense it’s like being a kid and knowing your parents got you a certain present that comes in several versions from different companies and you just hope like hell your parents bought the right one.

I know we have a new defense under the tree from a guy I only learned about in the last year and I really hope we got the right one. I’m dying to unwrap that present Saturday night to find out.

Defense will improve dramatically over last year - just based on experience level and coaching/scheme.
How far they go will depend on the progression of the 3 DL sophomores - Tuimoloau, Sawyer, and Williams.
If they are as advertised, we'll be a top defense. Should get a good preview of this progression in tomorrow's game, as they'll be challenged by a strong OL.

“We're ready. We're 100% ready to go. … We've put them through the crucible, we go against the nation's best offense every day, we've pushed and prodded and poked and tried to stretch them as far as they can go. So wherever they're at right now, it's 100%. And that's what I dial the gameplan into. So yeah, I'm confident.”

THERE'S JUST AN ENERGY LEVEL TO THEM, A CONFIDENCE, GUYS BUZZING AROUND PLAYING FAST, PLAYING VIOLENT, CREATING CHAOS OUT THERE. AND THAT'S GONNA BE FUN TO WATCH.”– RYAN DAY ON THE OSU DEFENSE

Put them through the crucible.... that's the difference.

There isn't a game this year where our team faces a tougher team than what they face in practice.
