Ohio State’s only allowed one touchdown so far this season, which is tied for the second-fewest in the country behind only defending national champion Georgia. Giving up just two yards per carry on the ground, the Buckeyes rank ninth in the nation. Knowles’ three-man linebacker rotation has been crucial to both of those stats.

The Buckeyes did not hold a team to less than 17 first downs until game 7 last year.

The Buckeyes held their first opponent (Notre Dame, for those of you who forgot) to 12 first downs.

The Buckeyes did not hold a 2nd team to less than 17 first downs until game 11 last year.

The Buckeyes did that in game 2 this year, holding the Red Wolves to 15.

The Buckeyes have thus already equaled last year's total for opponents held to less than 17 first downs.

Thank you for this; this is quality information. I’m wondering since you took the time to look into this and I’m apparently lazy: Do you know what constitutes well above average in first downs allowed per game defensively? Obviously it’s only a two game sample size but I guess that makes me curious who has fared particularly well in this area way — over the last couple seasons.

Ohio State’s defense has impressed in many ways through the first two games of Jim Knowles’ tenure as defensive coordinator, but creating turnovers isn’t one of them.

Despite ranking among the top 25 total, scoring and rushing defenses in the country, the Buckeyes are one of just eight FBS teams that has yet to tally a takeaway two weeks into the season, along with Alabama, Notre Dame, Auburn, Maryland, Fresno State, Army and Temple.

I can't wait to see them in the Top 10 for all those categories and I believe we're on track for it. Jim Knowles is magic

I think matching the 15-first-downs or less production of last year in the first two games is probably meaningful, I agree with you that the 2-game sample size means we can't gather much more than that.

For the former we only have to say that we think Notre Dame and Arkansas State aren't BOTH worse than all but the two worst offensive performances Ohio State faced last year. To draw more than that, we have to say we think they're at least average offenses at this point. At this point, I honestly don't thinks so, but I can't be sure.

To answer your question, here are some rankings in Opponent First Downs per game for 2021:

1) Wisconsin - 12.9
2) Georgia - 14.8
.
.
5) Oklahoma State - 15.6
.
.
.
11) TTUN - 17.1
.
.
.
78) Ohio State - 21.3

13 for Toledo.

Thus exceeding last year’s total for number-of-teams-held-to-15-or-fewer first downs

But my main takeaway from today’s defensive performance is that this was the rough early game that was bound to happen with the new scheme

glad it happened on a day where the offense scored 77

Gives the defense a chance to improve before next week

Heard Day mention in his presser McCalister and Proctor warmed up but were then held out. Sounded like they could have played but he wanted to make sure they had time to heal for next week and also wanted to get some other guys some reps. That could explain some of the D's lapses. Still, 13 first downs and 21 points? After the last 2 years I'll take it as long as the D keeps improving as the year goes along.

As far as Proctor, McCalister and Hall, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said after the game, “they were all available” Saturday and only held out as a precautionary measure. He also said he expects them to be ready to play next week. But they aren’t the only Buckeye starters whose status will be in question throughout the coming week.

Just sayin': "GET WELL SOON".

There will be talk of disappointment about the pass defense, but let’s be honest, Fann is not a regular MAC QB. He should in the transfer portal next week, lol! He can start for a number of P5 schools right now(aTm, ND, scUM st, and Auburn come to mind)! He’s the only dual threat QB we’ll have on the roster until scUM in November. I could count a number of times that there should’ve been sacks, and Fann got away, guys like Graham Mertz and Sean Clifford ain’t getting away from that pass rush so easily and finding open WRs.

Definitely. Dude was Michael Vick different. We had dudes corralling him that were crazy fast and athletic and he still got away from them and made plays. Put him on Texas and they would have beat Bamas ass by more than a little. The MAC is going to get destroyed
