DBOP - Don't Be Out of Phase

I mean, in theory I agree with you. But some defenses call for it.

For instance, if the call is cover 2 and JK Johnson is lined up across from a WR and if no other WR comes into his zone, he can carry the WR underneath and the safety plays over top.

But nothing enrages me more than a guy playing underneath the WR in cover 3.

Adjustments: Knowles is doing a fantastic job adjusting in the 2nd half. Thus far, in 6 games, opposing teams have scored 34 points in the 2nd half. That's 5.6 points per game in the 2nd half. And a good portion of the points came in mop up time.
Note: In 4 of the games the D only gave up a total of 13 points in the 2nd half. That's 3.25 points per 2nd half.

This weekend shouldn't be much of a test, but the more I see of other teams and us, the better I feel about The Game and playoffs. Scum's run game is legit, but I don't see them pounding us like they did last year and JJ isn't going to beat us. Same with uga. They're backs are good, but they aren't going to light us up, and Stetson is all name, no cowboy. Tennessee, though…We’ll know more about uga, who still hasn’t played anyone, after the Florida game and even more about them and RockyTop after 11/5z

Not enough is being mentioned about just how dominant this defense has been! I know some will say that OSU has played no one on the schedule. But if you compare the 1st 7gms of 2022 with the 1st 7gms of 2021, you will see what a ridiculous 180 that Knowles has been able to do in barely a year on the job. OSU is top 5 in yards allowed(2) and points allowed(5) which easily negates the lack of turnovers and sacks because the defense is causing 3 and outs at a high rate and getting the ball back to the offense.

In 2021, in the 1st 7 games, the defense allowed 3 teams to have over 400yds of total offense(2 of them with over 500:yow2:). 5 of the 1st 7 games, opposing offenses had over 300yds!
In 2022, OSU has had 1 opposing offense have over 300yds so far... 1! Rutgers, Maryland and Minnesota all had over 300yds, and Tulsa had 500+! So the argument against OSU playing anybody is thrown out the window when it allowed large numbers to bad teams in 2021.

In 2021, every team in the 1st 7 games had at 17 first downs, and 4 of them had over 20 first downs.
In 2022 only 1 team has 15 first downs. 1!

The turnovers are about the same, but as you can tell from the dominant numbers above, the turnovers on downs are every bit the key to this elite defense.

Good stuff! Optimal word you used is Elite. This team is Elite top to bottom. The Silver Bullets are back!

Seven games now and still only 34 points given up in the 2nd half. That's an average of 4.8 points per game in the 2nd half. In five of those games the D has only given up 13 points in the 2nd half. That's 2.6 points given up in the 2nd half. To say that the Defensive play in the 2nd half has been dominant is an understatement. More like stifling.

Reminds me of Dantonio.

Back on Bucknuts I posted some stuff in 2002 about the Silver Bullets 2nd half defense. I then broke it down to 2nd half defense on Ohio State's side of the 50. There weren't many data points, because every time the opponent set foot on Ohio State's side of the 50 in the 2nd half they started going backwards.

This defense is starting to become reminiscent of that season.

The offense might be a smidge better though.

I started looking a little more at Iowa’s offensive stats vs OSU and scUM. We are all in agreement that Iowa has one of the worst CFB offenses in history. Against scUM, the statue that is Petra’s was able to go 21-31 246yds TD. That was highest passing output that Iowa has had all season… Petras played South Dakota St, Nevada and a down year Iowa St, but had his highest passing game of the season to #4 scUM

Iowa played OSU on Saturday, and Petras had a whopping 49yds passing, and Iowa had 81yds passing for the entire game:banger:
I’m still worried in the back of my mind about scUM because of last season. But the better this defense plays, the more comfortable I get. But rivalry games can always be crap shoot, and I grew up watching OSU during the Cooper years(I moved to Ohio in 1994), I still have PTSD from those years watching the Game.
