2022 College Football Polls

I made the mistake of reading some Twitter comments about the polls. How can these SEC fans continue to believe that beating a team who is no longer in the top 10-but was when you played them- a top 10 win? Fucking idiots

They've had that thought ever since ESPN morphed into the SEC hype machine, they basically fuel it. Every year there are a few SEC team teams that get way overranked at the beginning part of the season, and at the end of the year ESPN still touts them as "HIGH LEVEL WINS" for the better SEC teams, even though those once over ranked teams end up 7-5/6-6 type teams.

Totally makes sense that at the end of the year, beating a preseason top 10 team who finishes like 7-5 should still totally count as a "top 10 win"

I'm sure they count Notre Dame as a "top 10 win" for Ohio State

^ Arkansas will definitely be one of those teams this year

"WELL THEY WERE A TOP 10 TEAM UNTIL THEY RAN INTO THE SEC GAUNTLET! SO ITS STILL A GREAT WIN!"
like how “Ohio State hasn’t played a ranked team” …. too their credit the CFnerds have called out everyone for this crap… not that it matters but at least there are some calling folks out for hte double standard

The "THEY STILL COUNT AS A TOP WIN!" logic of course only applies to the SEC, because in the minds of those idiots those mediocre teams would still be highly ranked if they didn't have to play in the SEC every week.

Few things indicate the folly of the polls more than how close they are to be in total lock-step.

Comparing AP to Coaches

Numbers 1 and 2 identical
Numbers 3 and 4 swapped, but a big upset just happened. Give them a week and they'll be back in lock-step.

Numbers 5 through 8 identical
Numbers 9 and 10, same two Pac-10 teams, swapped

Numbers 11 through 17 identical
Numbers 18 through 21, same teams, different order

Numbers 22 through 25 identical

Not one team that is ranked in one poll is unranked in the other.

Not that this matters, because there is actually very little that separates teams after the top 10 or so. That does serve to make the similarity of the polls that much more absurd, but it also just makes me laugh and roll my eyes at it.

More than anything, this exercise has confirmed for me that my usual M.O. of ignoring the polls is the right course of action. Excuse me while I return to it.

It's so fucking annoying. The SEC 'grind' is even more annoying this year as Bama and Georgia have taken a step back and Tennessee is vulnerable to dropping a game at any time. The rest of the conference is filled with messy, but talented teams that shoot up the polls and then disappear, regardless of how much they struggle or loose to Appy St, USF, etc.

Ole Miss is the funny one, they are CLEARLY a product of just not playing anyone worth a damn yet. But here we are supposed to be pretending that they are a LEGIT CONTENDER.

Auburn who's offense has been shit all year, gashed them.

Vandy put 28 on them.

They survived Tulsa 35-27

Their star win is a escape of a Kentucky team that looks about as meh as it gets.
