2022 College Football Polls

ScriptOhio

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
The 2022 Way-Too-Early college football top 25

i

1. Alabama Crimson Tide

2. Ohio State Buckeyes

2021 record: 11-2 (8-1 Big Ten)
Starters expected to return: 6 offense, 7 defense, 1 special teams
Key starters expected to leave: WR Garrett Wilson, WR Chris Olave, G Thayer Munford, OT Nicholas Petit-Frere, DT Haskell Garrett, DE Tyreke Smith, CB Marcus Williamson, PK Noah Ruggles
Key additions: ATH Alex Styles, OLB C.J. Hicks, DE Kenyatta Jackson Jr., OLB Gabe Powers, ATH Kaleb Brown, DT Caden Curry

Outlook: The Buckeyes just missed making the College Football Playoff for a third straight time under coach Ryan Day, with a humbling 42-27 loss at rival Michigan knocking them out of contention. Much of Ohio State's problems in 2021 can be attributed to the defense. Day hired Jim Knowles, who revamped Oklahoma State's defense the past two seasons, and Knowles will have his work cut out for him. With quarterback C.J. Stroud and running back TreVeyon Henderson coming back, the offense should again be explosive, even with Wilson and Olave turning pro. The receiver corps is in good hands with Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The 2022 season will be demanding, with a home opener against Notre Dame, Big Ten road games against Michigan State and Penn State and divisional crossover games versus Iowa and Wisconsin at home.

3. Georgia Bulldogs

4. Texas A&M Aggies

5. Michigan Wolverines

6. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

7. Utah Utes

8. NC State Wolfpack

9. Oklahoma State Cowboys

10. Michigan State Spartans

11. Clemson Tigers

The Way Too early.....

Predicting 2022 season's College Football Playoff, New Year's Six bowl games

PEACH BOWL (PLAYOFF SEMIFINAL)
10637003.jpg

Date: Saturday, Dec. 30, 2022

Projected matchup: No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 4 Notre Dame

Anchored by Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr. returning as arguably the two faces of college football, Alabama is the unanimous No. 1 across all way-too-early rankings this month coming off its near run to a second consecutive national championship. It didn't happen in last week's final against Georgia, but there's not a title contender in 2022 that returns more production on defense than the Crimson Tide and bringing back the reigning Heisman winner should work wonders for a receiving corp replacing its two leading targets in Jameson Williams and John Metchie.

Notre Dame narrowly missed a playoff berth this season after a lone loss to Cincinnati and it's going to be a lot to ask of the Fighting Irish to get to the final four if they fall at Ohio State in their 2022 opener. However, should the Buckeyes win the Big Ten and Notre Dame wins out — including victories over Clemson and USC among others — that could be enough to convince the selection committee that Marcus Freeman's team in his first season as coach deserves a bid. We'll admit, the four-seed right now, this early, is anyone's guess. The Notre Dame-Clemson showdown in November will go a long way in determining the playoff race down the stretch.

FIESTA BOWL (PLAYOFF SEMIFINAL)

Date: Saturday, Dec. 30, 2022

Projected matchup: No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 3 Georgia

Unfinished business. That'll be the popular narrative surrounding the Buckeyes during spring practice and beyond for 2022. After missing out on the Big Ten Championship Game and final four following a rivalry loss to Michigan, the offense's core of Heisman finalist C.J. Stroud, TreVeyon Henderson and Jaxon Smith Njigba are itching to get back on the field and show the Buckeyes will be one of the nation's flashiest offenses in 2022. The key here, however, is the revamped defense under former Oklahoma State DC Jim Knowles. If the Buckeyes indeed capture the No. 2 seed next fall, their defense will be back to playing at an elite level.

How does Georgia get back to the playoff in defense of its national championship in 2022? Follow the same path as 2021 and it should be more than enough. Given the likelihood the Bulldogs are a double-digit favorite in every game next fall, including the season opener in Atlanta against former defensive coordinator Dan Lanning and Oregon, there's a good chance Georgia's over-under win preseason win total will be set at 11.5. Get to Atlanta again at 12-0 and even another loss to Alabama should put Kirby Smart's team back in the playoff as the four-seed. If Georgia loses a game during the regular season, the Bulldogs will need to beat Alabama in the SEC Championship to secure a bid, as the Crimson Tide during the 2021 campaign.

3. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

Ryan Day makes point in practice

Late in the season, quarterback C.J. Stroud finally showed flashes of the quarterback everyone expected him to be. Stroud ended the year with more than 4,000 passing yards, plus 44 touchdowns and just six interceptions. It was a strange season for the Buckeyes, who did not even make the Big Ten title game, let alone the College Football Playoff. But the Rose Bowl victory should provide plenty of optimism about this team in 2022.

4. GEORGIA BULLDOGS

5. BAYLOR BEARS

6. ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS

7. NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH

8. UTAH UTES

9. OLE MISS REBELS

10. MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS
