Close on a few blitzes? He drops in coverage and he’s not even in the picture. If you can’t cover, tackle sideline to sideline and can’t get their on the blitz what else is there? Simon has flashed, Mitchell has flashed.
Yeah he's been close. He gets home on his 2 near sacks and you'd probably have a different tone. Eichenberg isn't making plays but he's not giving up a lot of plays either. That's why he'd be my last rotational player. You have to find a way for Steele to get on the field though and same for Simon.

Be clear I didn’t say Eichelberget specifically..linebacker play in general. If you play LB and see the stats so far this year why wouldn’t Pope or Gant think they could do more if they got snaps? We need more out of this group ? Player or scheme we need more or let me say it this way..the silver bullets were defined by linebacker play.

Agree we need more but we'll need more than 2 LBs the rest of the year regardless. Also the defense is defined by our DL now and has been since 2012.

MATT BARNES SAYS OHIO STATE’S DEFENSIVE PLAY CALLING HAS BEEN “GROUP EFFORT” FOLLOWING STAFF SHAKEUP

125422_h.jpg

For the second time in four years, Matt Barnes is calling a Big Ten team’s defensive plays even though he isn’t its defensive coordinator.

During his final year at Maryland in 2018, Barnes took over defensive play calling responsibilities from Andy Buh, who was the Terrapins’ defensive coordinator that year. And since Ohio State’s third game of the season, Barnes has been the lead defensive play caller for the Buckeyes, taking that responsibility from Kerry Coombs following the Buckeyes’ loss in their second game of the year against Oregon.

While he’s still never been a full-time defensive coordinator, he says the experience he gained at Maryland three years ago has helped him as he’s taken on increased responsibilities in Columbus this year.

“I think it’s like anything else. The best way to get better at playing football is to play football. The best way to improve calling defense is to call defense,” Barnes said Tuesday. “So hopefully, we’ll continue to see improvement as we go, but I learned some valuable lessons that year in 2018 and learning with every play right now.”

Ohio State’s defense has been better since Barnes took over play-calling responsibilities, allowing just 27 total points against Tulsa and Akron after allowing 31 points to Minnesota and 35 points to Oregon – though it’s uncertain whether the defense has actually gotten better, or whether it’s simply benefitted from playing weaker competition. The competition will start to get tougher as they resume Big Ten play with Rutgers this week followed next week by Maryland, which ranks second only to Ohio State in Big Ten total offense.

“I think we’ve made some strides, and I think this week will be another big test for us,” Ryan Day said Tuesday. “I think you just overall see us changing some things up, playing with great aggression. But again, we’ll know that more here in a couple weeks and figure out where we’re at. We got a big challenge this week, and as it continues to grow, I don’t think the answer’s here yet. We gotta see where we’re at in this thing. It’s week to week. We’ll be on the brink week to week. It’s not just you do a good job one week and then move on.”

Would sure be nice for the light to come on for Tyreke Smith. He’s shown glimpses but can’t seem to fully come on and this defense needs it desperately. I can think of several plays throughout his career that he seemed a half second way from making a play. He needs to close that gap and actually finish. If he can do that it a few times a game and cause the QB to hurry some throws or actually get some sacks it would be a huge boost.

Phenomenal write up by Ross Fulton over at the scoop about the defensive changes over the past 2 games. Gives me hope for the rest of the season.

"Although all caveats about the opponent must be taken into account, Ohio State at least now looks like a “normal” defense in the best sense of the word. That means that they are mixing their fronts and coverages, having run gaps accounted for, and not missing responsibilities. This seemed to install confidence and aggressiveness in the Buckeyes’ personnel as the game progressed."

Only having watched it once, with a healthy amount of bourbon in me, I think I saw a lot of the "off speed" pitches we've been so desperately needing. For bonus points, I think I also saw guys who mostly, looking at you Banks, knew what they were doing and were even bold enough to jump some routes. X and O guys would have to say for sure but that part felt encouraging. Even though it was Akron, that's more coaching and assignment stuff that isn't influenced by the physical mismatches.

The DL dominating Akron OL, otoh, is 100% due to physical mismatches and means next to nothing to me. The only positive I can come up with here is that confidence can be a funny thing. Sometimes a free throw gets a great basketball scorer going so maybe mauling a bad MAC OL will get these guys going? That's all I've got.

Very interested to hear from the film breakdown guys this week.

Love hearing this from Fulton. Running different schemes and players executing assignments in those schemes has nothing to do with Akron being outmatched. We know the talent is there, now the coaches are putting the talent in positions to succeed. This absolutely gives me hope.

Now, about the DL....the interior is in good shape I think. It's the lack of production from the ends (so far) that's killing the D. Harrison has to play like a 5 star and the two 5 star freshmen are going to have to develop quicker than they probably should be asked to. It isn't fair but it is reality. The older DE's have really left the defense no other choice.

What I saw in the Akron game that was not in the prior two games was some aggression. There's nothing worse than sitting back and letting the offense take it to you. It's the equivalent of playing prevent defense all game long. Or to use another cliché, playing not to lose instead of playing to win. I too now have some hope, but its a guarded hope.

Agree with everyone saying there is now hope, based on what we saw in the Akron game.

Going forward, especially during games, we need to understand that there are still going to be growing pains. This team is not just running a defensive scheme they didn't run last year. They're running a scheme that they didn't run in the spring or in training camp. Not a recipe for perfection, but it speaks volumes that there were better results almost immediately. Were there a few gaffes that Akron just wasn't able to take advantage of because they're Akron? Sure. There were several so obvious that even I saw them. But it was still better than we've seen previously.
