Phenomenal write up by Ross Fulton over at the scoop about the defensive changes over the past 2 games. Gives me hope for the rest of the season.

"Although all caveats about the opponent must be taken into account, Ohio State at least now looks like a “normal” defense in the best sense of the word. That means that they are mixing their fronts and coverages, having run gaps accounted for, and not missing responsibilities. This seemed to install confidence and aggressiveness in the Buckeyes’ personnel as the game progressed."

Site association not withstanding, as you know how many feel about that outlet… I would read Ross’ work anywhere he publishes.

disclaimer: I’m not as polar in my opinion of that site. I think there’s good and bad and all shades between at all of them.

Just a question, but a lot of praise of being heaped on Paul Rhodes, but I thought analysts only really watched film, but had little input on playcalling or schemes. IMO, shouldn't Barnes be getting more praise for how well the defense has been since the Tulsa game, or am I missing something?

Where are you seeing the Rhoads praise? Analysts can do everything except coach the players and go recruit. They can gameplan and/or craft a scheme if the situation calls for it. They cannot call plays.

Not sure why the stress of having only 1 sack last game. It was actually two sacks and their QB should've taken the sacks on at least 3 other throws (2 easy INT and another we dropped). That's 5 sacks if Vedral eats the ball instead of chucking it up.

The only thing the defense is missing (assuming they continue playing the way they did yesterday) is pass rushing from the DEs. OSU has 15 sacks, which is more than Wisconsin and Alabama. If the defense was playing like this earlier, they’d have more. Kind of crazy to think about.

Akron is last in FBS, giving up 6 sacks a game. Everyone who has played them has a butt ton of sacks. I would bet that a lot of the sacks they've given up have been to DTs and LBs, because their guards are straight ass. The matchup of their guards against our DTs was one of the funniest things I've seen on a football field in more than half a century of watching this sport.

EDIT: The Ohio Bobcats had 1 sack each against Syracuse, Duquesne, and Lousiana. They had none against Northwestern. They recorded EIGHT sacks against the Zips.

Even though there weren't a lot of sacks vs. Rutgers, Vedral was far from comfortable. Then again, that wasn't one of the better offensive lines that we'll see this year.

This is still very much a work in progress, and I agree with your point that we need a lot more out of the ends. What concerns me is @LordJeffBuck 's post in the off-season showing how much less productive the ends have been thus far in their careers compared to the greats of the recent past. That genuinely makes me wonder if the ceiling might be somewhere below the championship level, at least at that position.

DE is all coming down to how well JTT and Sawyer develop. Harrison is what he is at this point and all the others have been surpassed by two freshmen.

I don't think it's even a question the ceiling of that group is limited this year. JTT and Sawyer are true freshmen, they are only going to be able to do so much.

Harrison came in as 5star RAW athlete, that played DE. I agree that at this point Harrison is what he is. He was brought in as a project, and everyone should've known that. It was said over and over. He was not a finished project. Out of all of the 5star DEs we had come in over the years(Bosa bros and Young), Harrison needed the most developing. I'd say that JTT and Sawyer are actually much further ahead in skill set than Harrison was in his 1st 2 years at OSU. Nothing against Harrison, but at this point he's a good starter, but not great like many were expecting by now.
