2020 Team Discussion Thread

Solid information about upcoming calendar of events. Committee will be presenting this week to chancellors and presidents. Confirms what was rumored yesterday about Day telling team they’d have an answer by Friday.

At this point I find it hard to believe anything unofficial.

Why is the Big 10 reconsidering? They made a decision. They flip flop like a fish out of water.

Honestly, because I think they realize they rushed the decision and look pretty foolish. It's better to make a U-turn now, than go another 300 miles on the wrong route. While a school like Ohio State can likely withstand the negative fall-out, I'm not sure most Big 10 football programs can.....I know academics are Big 10's top priority, but crushing their football programs, isn't sustainable long-term for the rest of the athletic department budgets.

They look pretty foolish when HS's are safely playing, and colleges all over the country, with far less budgets, are also safely playing. The players and families are begging to play, and have relinquished on a host of demands previously made. And lastly, Tom Mars says he will go away if Big 10 plays in Fall. Otherwise his goal is to make life hell on them with FOIA requests (I'm paraphrasing him, but he's fighting like hell for the players).

If Sir Yacht can't get to the bottom of it, I don't see why I should trust a university President.

I think the Presidents are dealing with more than athletics. Football and athletics are a distraction they haven’t spent time on.

Presidents all over the country are dealing with more than athletics though.

That honestly pinpoints Gene Smith and Ryan Day's biggest source of frustration. They were given a "no vote" when the Presidents and chancellors have no idea what kind of precautions they're taking daily to ensure safety for their players. I get the Big 10 has other priorities, but so does BYU, the ACC, SEC, Big 12, Army, Navy, Air Force etc.

It's funny to me, how three respectable programs/universities can face the same situation, and view it so differently. Clemson and UNC for example, also had 30+ players return to campus and test positive for Covid. Just like Rutgers.

The difference is UNC and Clemson didn't panic, quarantined the players for two weeks, shut down the athletic department for 10 days, and reconvened. When it happened at Rutgers, it's as if the entire conference said "hell no, this can't work".

Clemson and UNC took opposite approach and almost made it a positive. After quarantining those 30+ athletes and re-introducing them into program after the 14 days, it was business as usual. And they're now likely in a better position for having those positives and dealing with them, than just shutting down the fall season. The players are now tested 3 times a week and under strict guidelines if they want to play on Saturday's. Which is currently different from Big 10, where violating policy will get you restricted from practice (in my Allen Iverson voice). One of these is much safer than the other.
