2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

Plus Tevin Coleman ripped our defense, Conor Cook went for 300 passing, and gardner threw for 240 with 28 points.

This defense has a higher ceiling than that 2014 squad. Right now IMO if we just put Wade at safety we are about all shored up.

To me it's a crime that Wade is a part time player while Pryor/Wint take up snaps. Get your best players on the field period.

I'm not sure if it's that easy to switch from corner to safety. Maybe it is though he'll switch there by the next few games. But I agree, I think youll see him get more and more playing time until maybe Arnette is slowly and silently switched to the 3rd/4th CB, even if it's not listed on the depth chart.

I do kinda feel for Arnette though. He's not a bad player, I actually think he's pretty good. He just gets picked on cause he's not quite as good as the other guys.

Damon is great and bas been great. It's his play that will enable us to move Wade to safety if we end up doing that.

If anyone in the secondary has playing time reduced then it'll be the safety opposite of Fuller.

No one has the skill TCU has that we play. Everyone wants to say PED because of their offensive style but they aren't even close.

That said if we continue to stroll Pryor/Wint out there who combined to be mainly responsible again for 2 plays over 60 yards (one 94 yards) and 14 points then we will need to keep scoring.

Thinking more on it and I'm not sure why we dont play everyone within 10 yards of the LOS. More hats to stop the run, our CBs have been a strength, and if teams try to go deep our DL will have more time to get pressure.

Noticed a lot more zone this year for coverage.

Yep, LB play could improve but the glaring weakness is the Safety position opposite Fuller. Gave up two TDs against TCU. Urban said that this was our greatest weakness going into camp and he was right. Hopefully Wade is the answer. He has special written all over him. MLB play has to also step up for us to be a dominant Defense.

MLB I thought was solid really nothing straight through the middle.

Like you said though nail down that safety spot and IMO this is a different defense. Just like the OL you put your best 4 out (5 for OL) there in the secondary. Enough of Wint/Pryor though if they cant stop the big play (4 in 3 weeks) then let them work this out this upcoming off season.

Simplify it for Wade. Just play man with him in there because he's one of our best doing that.

You cant keep strolling out Pryor and Wint though. Just cant

Ok if you all were coaching the defense what would you do to fix the big play issues?

For me...

1. Wade to Safety
2. Back off the aggressiveness overall
3. If in 2nd/3rd and long situations keep everything in front.
4. Play Fuller in center field strictly

It's amazing--Pryor took bad angles on all three of TCU's rushing TDs. All three. And we all saw Wint's horrible misplay of TCU's TD pass. That lame duck pass would've been easily picked off by a veteran safety.
We seem to do this until we get burnt too much.

Last year it was the kickoff team giving up big returns and this year it's putting two kids out there that arent ready yet.

I would think three runs of 79, 80 and 94 would force us to do something different. If we arent going to do something different then we deserve to continue getting gashed.

Whatever we are doing we need to do something different. Im tired of hearing "well it's a lot of small things adding up to big things" just do something to stop the damn run. Afterall we do have crazy talent at DB so load the box and stop the run. Lets go

I think this is the general way people should look at a Meyer-ball defense vs a Tressel-ball defense. Meyer's defenses are, by design, going to give up yards and high teen to mid 20's kind of points points a game because they are so aggressive but the positive side of that aggression is Turnovers, TFL's, sacks and scores.

Defense is built to compliment the offense under Meyer.

Tressel used his offense to compliment his defense.

It's a hard adjustment for fans to make after so many years of defenses that didn't yield yards or points very easily at all. That said, 30ppg is too fucking much to be giving up. So the philosophy is what it is but the execution needs to improve.

These big plays are like timely goals in hockey, they are huge momentum shifters. Momentum is a significant thing in CFB.
To be honest I'd rather go back to the Tressel style of defense. Quite frankly every time the defense is on the field I hold my breath because you know someone's gonna fuck up horribly, whereas defense (and special teams) used to be a safety net under Tressel.

It's all well and good that the defense got 2 defensive scores but they wouldn't have even needed them if they actually played fundamentally sound. I just have this disturbing feeling this defense is going to get "Iowa'd" again at some point this year.
