2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

To be honest I'd rather go back to the Tressel style of defense. Quite frankly every time the defense is on the field I hold my breath because you know someone's gonna fuck up horribly, whereas defense (and special teams) used to be a safety net under Tressel.

It's all well and good that the defense got 2 defensive scores but they wouldn't have even needed them if they actually played fundamentally sound. I just have this disturbing feeling this defense is going to get "Iowa'd" again at some point this year.
Yep I feel the same way. With how explosive and how efficient our offense is we don't need to do anything spectacular on defense. Just be ordinary, just be fundamentally sound, and just don't break. If we can keep everyone on our schedule under 24 points it's over and we will go undefeated without question. We have superior athletes on defense so make people string drives together. I'm confident a team cant consistently go 10+ plays and come away with TDs.

Doesn't matter though we won't do this, we will continue to be aggressive, we won't make any Personnel changes at safety, and most likely we will continue giving up large place.

Everything’s under Schiano’s umbrella. Since he was Co-Defensive Coordinator with Fick it’s been subpar.

I just don’t get why he gets such unquestioned guru status. What’s he done to deserve that? I’m not saying the guy is awful but it’s just insane to me how everyone holds him in such high regard. Based on what exactly? Yes he brought Rutgers up.......but they had nowhere to go but up. And that speaks more to HC responsibilities.

I mean...........freaking Iowa. C’mon man. That’s his side of the ball. And literally nobody called him out. Almost ALL of the blame was in Davis which to me is nuts.

Strictly speaking from a defensive perspective, Gary Patterson does way more with way less.

I think criticisms are certainly meritorious — at least within reason. My particular concern is safety performance since it seems like no one except Fuller looks respectable and you can’t play the talent deprivation card there.

I’m a believer in giving things time, so I’m not saying he’s failed at it by any means; but someone needs to start developing there and quick.

Perhaps a more hands-on approach with LB play is in the cards too because Davis is straight losing me. Recruiting means shit without development.

That's the thing though, you can't have an Urban Meyer offense first team with a Tressel style defense.

Give me Meyer's philosophy 100 times out of 100, just get the back 7 tightened up and keep the other team scoring in the 17-24 point range instead of 30 and I'm fine.

Yeah that’s a fair take I suppose. Just like Tressel’s offenses could barely score 20 on Mac foes at times. Guess I’m still getting over the trauma of that Iowa game last year.

At DB:

Fuller
Wade
Sheff
DA
JO

Just play those 5 guys.

At LB:

Borland
Harrison
Werner

Forget all this rotation talk.

Just play those 8 guys.
I Would consider moving Browning to a rush end kind of guy. Sort of like Carpenter in 2005 on 3rd down.

All wasted breath on our part though. We are going to continue beating our proverbial head against a wall.

One change I noticed is we started putting someone over the center after the big run. Once we did that we pretty much eliminated the run.

IMO, the whole formation where you put the MLB over top the center should be for 3rd and very long only. Even then Oregon State ran a draw for 20+.

Would love to see Landers over center. How would any center handle his quickness?

Offensive tempo alone keeps you from going full on Defense first

I was loud and frequent in my criticism of the philosophy of Martyball (because that is what Tresselball is).

It is not the surest path to victory, in fact it goes against a lot of math that shows you the surest path to victory. I NEVER want to go back to that. I just want the current defense to keep the damage as well below 30ppg as possible.

Low to mid 20's is plenty good enough

I think that's still setting the bar waaay to low. There's no reason we should be giving up more than 20 ppg with the talent we recruit unless they're almost all 1st-year starters.

I haven’t seen anything said but was Amir Riep on the field Saturday? I didn’t see him on kick coverage like he normally is.
I ask because I’m curious if he will get a shot at safety. It was his best position in high school and he has tremendous ball skills.
