SKULL SESSION: BAKER MAYFIELD IN OHIO'S GOOD GRACES, CARLOS HYDE'S CRAZY DAY, AND THE BUCKEYE DEFENSIVE LINE STAYS STRONG

D-LINE GONNA BE ALRIGHT. Ohio State will be missing the best player in college football at least this week and likely longer as Nick Bosa had surgery on Thursday for a core muscle injury.

And folks, he's pretty irreplaceable.

Basically, he has more production than Chase Young, Jonathon Cooper, Tyreke Smith, Jashon Cornell and Tyler Friday combined through three games, in almost a third of the snaps.

There's no way to spin it, it's a huge loss, but if there's any position the Buckeyes have talent to pick up the slack, it's the defensive line. And even without Bosa, it still might be the best defensive line in the country.

From Colin Gay of The Lantern:

Even without Bosa, Cooper thinks there is a reputation to uphold.

“We watch defensive lines across the nation, see how they’re doing and stuff, we see how, like, their pass rushing, their stopping the run and stuff like that and we try to raise our game, just to show that we are the best,” Cooper said. “We’re confident in ourselves that we are the best.”

Players like Young, Cooper, Jones and Smith are going to try and combine to match the production that Bosa brings every Saturday. That does not mean the expectation is for one of them to step up and become a replication of what the preseason All-American has done this year.

“Nick Bosa is Nick Bosa,” Cooper said. “He’s always going to be Nick Bosa.”

It's not like this confidence is coming from nowhere – the defensive line dominated the entire second half against a top-15 team on the road after Bosa left with an injury.

Losing Bosa's a huge deal, but they'll be fine.

Football: Ohio State defensive line confident despite not having opportunities against Tulane

Image-from-iOS-2-1mzg9bl-530x396.jpg

Ohio State sophomore defensive end Chase Young felt the repercussions of Nick Bosa’s absence immediately.

WIth the junior defensive end out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair a core muscle injury, Young said he watched as the Tulane tight end, usually saved as a blocker to double-team Bosa, slid over to double-team him.

“With Nick on the other side, you can’t really double-team,” Young said. “If you do slide that way, Nick got a one-on-one. If you slide the other way, then I got the one-on-one. Nick definitely made a big impact.”

Bosa was not the only loss for the Ohio State defensive line on Saturday.

Redshirt junior defensive lineman Robert Landers did not play in Saturday’s game after Meyer had said in his Big Ten Teleconference on Tuesday he was “probable” heading into the matchup with Tulane.

For redshirt junior defensive tackle Davon Hamilton, who started in place of Landers on the defensive line, there was not any doubt in the unit’s ability, even without two of its key pieces.

“I thought we were fine beforehand,” Hamilton said. “Just before the game. Everybody was in a vibe, everybody was ready to go. You could see it in people’s eyes. We were ready before.”

However, with the offense Tulane ran against Ohio State, Young and the defensive line did not get many opportunities to rush the passer, to prove the unit’s ability without Bosa.

I wonder about the following:

Grinch and Schiano - both are/were safeties coaches - different philosophies in coaching the postition and calling the D...
Davis - he’s no Fickell and contract should not be renewed - there’s a reason he wasn’t working in the nfl..
Johnson - it was unrealistic to expect him to live up to Combs but of the batch he’s the least of my concerns because he has a legacy here.

I guess bottom line urbs expected Schiano to be a HC somewhere and to bring Grinch in to replace him at safety/DC coach... i’m wondering if there is any friction there because Grinch is really a ghost ... never really mentioned at being on the staff or anything...

We just need to trade Schiano for Ash straight up next year. Davis goes with Schiano, included at no extra charge.
Nah I like Schiano. What's fucking him over is the terrible LB play. Secondary play started off a little rough last year but they improved dramatically as the year wore on. Secondary play has mostly improved week to week this year. What remains a HUGE liability is the LB core. It was a GLARING weakness last year and remains so this year along with the second safety spot. Safeties actually looked good this week while the starting LBs recorded zero tackles.

Sadly I fear no changes are going to get made until this defense gets torched, which is probably going to happen next week.

Yeah I fear that we are going to lose to the 1 team we cant lose to which will hold us out of either the playoffs or the B1G championship game.

0 tackles from the starting LBs??? Yeahhh... I have a feeling another bad hire is going to keep this team from another NC this season.
Urban was asked about this during his presser today. It was news to him. He confessed he wasn't aware of that and had no answer. He literally said "I have no answer." Hopefully that results in a blowup back in the office.

My guess is still that we're asking them to do too much and they're out there thinking instead of reacting.

maybe you're seeing the leadership and light bulb finally starting to go off for the veterans who have been in those position meetings for a few years. Booker and Hilliard both flashed on Saturday. They are missing consistency, a lot of guys getting reps. LB by committee. Whoever gets the job done that day, I guess.

The main concern was that it was against a lower tier team in Tulane, who has a run heavy Offense. The starting DL did disrupt and penetrate the backfield repeatedly, had a number of TFL, but ZERO tackles is just mind boggling. The backups didn't seem to have that problem.
