2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

So far only two LBs have graded as champions... Harrison and Booker.

IMO you give them two the start as a reward and you go from there.

We won't but we should. We should reward good performances and nothing more. Give these kids incentive to play well.

Booker is producing and is the most experienced LB. He needs to start or play much more than he has been playing.
He's also not up against Darron Lee, pre-davis Baker, pre-davis Worley like he was years ago. OSU needs competent LB play first.
Hilliard has been a star on special teams and looked good in his limited playing time. We need someone to shore up the middle because its a weakness right now.
He had a couple of mistakes but he has also had a lot of flashes. I'd also be curious how well he would handle the MLB responsibilities. He's always been a sharp kid and has seniority over nearly every other backer (not named Booker).

Unfortunately, changes won't be made until we really get bit in the ass by it...in other words lose by it. You'd figure that the numerous huge plays in the OrSU and TCU games would've been the 2x4-upside-the-head wake-up call, but apparently not. During the Tulane game, they showed a graphic that stated the defense had given up 6 plays of 40+ yards in the first three games, while giving up only five all of last season. Then Tulane promptly went out and had a 39-yard play and two 38-yard plays. Fucking. Tulane.

Meyer said all summer that safety was his primary concern/weak spot for the team. The LB's are often out of position yes, but safetys are there to clean up messes. You don't have all these 40+ yard plays if you are getting good safety play.

I think at this point it's like 2013 and beginning of 2014 where, if the DL didn't make the play then something bad was about to happen to the back 7. That only got better as the safety play improved (Bell and Powell).

I'm not absolving the LB play but at this point I am seriously concerned about the entire back 7 as a unit. I don't think the corners are anything special at this point either but it's hard to tell based on who they have played.

Hopefully I am proven completely wrong in the PSU game but I am highly doubtful headed into it.

Personally been disappointed with Arnette and Okudah at DB to go along with Wint/Pryor.

Sheffield/Wade/Fuller have been very good though.

I think you're right though. I believe maybe we make a change but it'll end up costing us a game before we do. As always it'll be the 1 game that we can't afford to lose as well
