2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

Defense is attacking, which is good. But, they need to only attack their assignments and stop looking for the big play.
The Offense is a juggernaut, defense just has to get off the field, period. Attack your assignment and fill the gaps. When it's one on one, beat your man and get off the damn field.

The Offense will do the rest.

Meyer => Schiano => Grinch => Davis FILL THE GAPS! The players know this, the question is when? Love it when Grinch speaks, yet never hear anything from Bill Davis......kinda questionable. OK guys, put this back in our faces this week end against PSU, fill the gaps, make the tackles, TFL, defend the TEs, and pick off a pass or two, and all is forgiven. Go Bucks!

The one thing I believe will hold true is our defensive front will have more success then Penn State's defensive front. If we can live in the backfield and stop the run it will go a very long way to winning this game. Put them in third-and-long situations and I will take the odds that McSorley will not be able to beat us.

Damnit I wish our defense would just put together a complete game this weekend to prove this team is legit.

With all of the talk about the offenses it really will boil down to which defense can make more stops. They are more dependent on the Run than we are with either run or pass. So if we cannot shut this offense down we at least know we get a new linebacker coach next year because there is no excuse to let this team run the ball

Question to those who analyze the Xs and Os: Why is it that a team like Bama is able to plug and play players that were just as highly recruited as OSU's, and consistently field elite defenses year after year, while OSU can barely have an entire defense on the same page every year, with coaches that are IMO the best in the country?

Bit of Hyperbole there or did you miss our plug and play of incredible DB's the last few years. Overall the D has been pretty good the last few years. It's just when they look bad it's 80 yards for a TD or converting a 3rd and 15 with a draw bad

Just all coaching... Nick does not care who you are if you aren't performing then he will get rid of you.

I also believe our system has changed a lot on defense where as theirs has not. We were a soft coverage team for 2 years, quarters for 2 years and now press man for 3 years. We change so much if you think about it.

I'm not just referring to specific positions, but the defense in general. I completely understand what we did with the CBs, but you're missing the point of the defense as a whole. I'm watching Bama stay and remain elite every single year, with different players who are on the same level as our own, yet we have drastic inconsitencies yearly, while they hardly have any, just a sustained excellence that we should be having ourselves. I get blown plays, but my God, the IU game to start the season last year was a clear example of the Jeckyll and Hyde defense that we've had since Meyer got her. I'm not being sky is falling guy here, just questioning why that is to be. And I'm sure some of that has to be that Urban is so damn loyal to his staff through the good and moreso the bad.

And this makes complete sense. Meyer is more willing to let mishaps happens because they are from his friends, as opposed to Saban hiring coaches with no personal relationship to him.
And it was my understanding that Fickell and Schiano were the only DC changes in philosophy, am I wrong?

As someone who has managed 10+ years I would never hire friends even when I knew they were great workers. Reason being if it comes down to termination or to part ways it won't cloud my judgement.

I'm shocked that UFM doesnt also share this mindset because this is very common in most management forums. Bottom line even if Davis turns it around he should have never been hired.

Like you said Nick would not tolerate any coach to under perform and so far UFM has shown a tendency to let friends/family have a little more leniency. No coincidence that when it's not friends/family he gets rid of peopld fairly soon (2 years) if it's not working.

So far UFM has made a lot of great hires..

1. Ash
2. Day
3. Coombs
4. Johnson
5. Herman
6. Warriner as OL coach
7. Fick
8. Wilson
9. Schiano
10. Grinch

But some duds too..

1. Davis
2. Withers
3. Warriner as OC
4. Beck

Fairly good track record but when we hire duds they're real bad. The duds have single handidly kept this program from at least 2 more titles IMO. Its why I'm so damn nervous for this years team because if we fail to win the big ten we will have wasted the best offense in the country by a mile .

The run Alabama has been on for the past 10 years is pretty close to unprecedented in the history of college football. So when you say, “a team like Bama”, you’re really just talking about 2009-2018 Alabama. Obviously we’d all love to see OSU go on a run similar to Alabama, and I don’t think they’re too far off. And I’ll take OSU’s consistency, of putting forth good defenses and overall teams, against anyone else’s with the probable exception of Alabama.

But my point is, the coaching loyalty that Urban has had is literally the only difference between OSU having a similar run. We have next to the same talent level, and facilities on the same level as well campuses and history, so we should have a run just as historic, IMO. And Miami also had a similar run too if I remember, and that’s the closest I can think of. And I’ll take OSU’s consistency as well, but like @bukIpower said, we should have at least 1-2 more NCs in the trophy case
