2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

Also re: Dambrot, the fact that no other school has picked him up until now probably suggests he's a MAC/Mid Level A-10 type lifer. He's was at Akron for 13 seasons. Now at Duquesne.

He is near the bottom of guys i'd want.

That's easier to say when you're winning. Right now, what is the draw - for top kids who have other top options - of Ohio State? A big, empty arena? Finishing 11th in the conference?

Who are we beating in a recruiting battle? Sparty? TSUN? Indiana? Notre Dame? Purdue? And forget completely about the blue bloods - no chance in hell. We can talk all we want about what type of kids we expect to play for tOSU, but we're not exactly in a position of leverage at this point.

If it takes a few JUCO kids to start winning again I'm fine with it. THEN we can be more selective, when we're putting a competitive team on the floor and the top kids actually WANT to be a Buckeye.
there were the same questions and concerns when matta was hired. heck, given the scandals, the program was in a far worse situation. regardless, matta recruited at a very high rate. i would not expect the new coach to recruit at the same level, but i do expect that the new coach should pull in players like bazely, hunter, and nance. i don't think the current situation is so dire that the next coach can't sign in-state 4-stars with regularity. it is far easier to turn around recruiting in basketball than it is in football, especially if the coach is willing to play the ugly aau game, which matta was not.

If you have any interest in describing "play[ing] the ugly aau game," and Matta's unwillingness to do so, I'm interested in reading it.

As has been discussed on this site in the past, there were other factors that worked in our favor back when Matta was hired. As those factors have changed so has the level of recruiting - it seems to have become convenient to blame Matta's declining health, or his recruiting style. To me it's a dangerous assumption that things will be just fine when a healthy, new coach comes in because we're "Ohio State". This isn't 2004.

Again, what does our new coach offer a kid with options that he can't get at Power 5 schools in neighboring states? Not only the B1G schools, but strictly from a basketball standpoint we're now competing with Xavier and Butler, who were "mid-majors" when Thad came to Columbus. Now they're Big East schools who are doing a lot better than OSU on the hardwood. Thad had one of the best classes ever in just a few years. I'm not holding my breath that the new coach will be able to pull anything close to that off, anywhere near that quickly, if ever at all.

Just sayin….There are quite a few posters worried about who our next basketball coach is going to be but they certainly did not like Matta. When I was defending him, I said be careful what you wish for and I stand by that.
Please do not give me but we kind of had Miller if Smith would have acted sooner because as Titus has written there is no guarantee that Miller would have come to Ohio State over Indiana and play second fiddle to the football program.
Call me concerned with some of the names I am hearing.. I will take Chris Jent and call it a day over some of the other names.

matta would have rather just dealt with the player, the player's high school coach, and the player's family. aau has made that increasingly difficult if not impossible. now coaches who hope to sign the best players usually have to deal with aau coaches, shoe companies, and entourages. as matta recently stated, his ideal recruits were oden and conley... because they didn't want to be recruited.

i'm not saying that the new coach must "employ" a band of booster$, but i am saying that the new coach will likely be tasked with playing this ugly aau game that matta wanted no part of.

edit: matta didn't want to deal with the families either.

Honestly, it may have to take that at the start with how train wrecked the recruiting situation is at the moment. Get a few good JUCOs in and win some games, re-instate some of the enthusiasm around the program that's been lost in the past few years, then it will be easier to get HS kids here that can field a competitive team. The atmosphere around the program right now is groggy and likely not appealing to most B1G caliber HS kids.

Thing is, we're not replacing Thad Matta, 2005-12...we're looking to replace Thad Matta, 2013-17. It won't be hard to improve upon the last 4-5 years. Will the new coach replicate what Matta did his first 8-9 years? Probably not. But correcting the downward trajectory Matta has been on the last 4-5 years won't take a lot. Especially considering how things bottomed out this spring. Keeping Matta on with his health issues and damaged recruiting profile would be a dagger. There is zero chance he was turning things around. In fact, all indications are that it was going right in the sewer.

As for Jent, anything more than interim and no thanks. He had one unsuccessful stint as an NBA HC, and has been an assistant on the staff that was in charge as tOSU hoops circled the drain.

Put it this way: if Urban Meyer was to do this the next five seasons:
9-4 (Minor Bowl Win)
8-5 (Minor Bowl Win)
8-5 (Minor Bowl Loss)
6-6 (No Bowl)
5-7 (No Bowl)

...and we were recruiting a bunch of 2 and 3* kids, with the best players in Ohio bleeding out of the borders, would anybody be arguing to retain him?

Interesting Dispatch article. GS told the players they'll have a new coach by the weekend, which supports the whale in the back pocket theory. Then the article goes to list a couple of B listers and a what the fuck choice (Huggins) as on OSU's radar. I'm beginning to think that nobody has any real idea of what's playing (played?) out behind the scenes other than GS, and I pray that he does.
