2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

As this gains steam, despite the mixed feelings I have about his ability to recruit at a program like Ohio State, he's somebody I could get behind. He's not a "whale", not that I ever thought we were getting one, but he's a very good.coach and seems like a good man. We could certainly do a lot worse. He fielded some damn good teams at ISU, including one that gave Thad's last really good team fits in the 2013 tourney. I think that was the game Ross won with a late three.
Blue balls. Damn yous, Twitter.

Those getting excited about the multiple folks GS is speaking to might want to slow down a step.

I don't know the exact process that must be followed at OSU, but I have been in the position of filling vacancies as a manager in the public sector. I was required to announce the vacancy so that those who were interested could make their interest known and then give each of those folks fair consideration. This was true even though in most instances I had a target candidate in mind. But I was still open as I interviewed others.

Even in the case of Urban Meyer GS had a list of candidates that he presented to a search committee. He did not contact any of those other contacts, but he did follow a process that considered multiple candidates.

If this process winds up by the end of the week as has been suggested it will, I would submit that a target was in mind all along. Which still does not suggest that another candidate might appear who was not under initial consideration. There is certainly no harm in waiting to see if Phil Jackson submits a resume.

As for Hoiberg and recruiting, NBA HC experience can get you into a lot of living rooms.

As for Hoiberg's recent statement, remember when ....

Matta said on June 29th that he wasn't a candidate at Ohio State. He made that statement to Cincinnati Enquirer reporter Dustin Dow. Matta said Wednesday night that Dow asked him the question when surrounded by campers on the Cintas Center court floor.

Dow, however, told ESPN.com Wednesday that Matta gave the response at an earlier interview in Matta's office. Xavier sports information director Tom Eiser confirmed that he set up the meeting. Dow also said that the campers were a good 15 feet away from Matta when he did talk to him at night.

Matta also told ESPN.com the same week that he wasn't a candidate for the Ohio State job. ESPN.com asked Matta if he had interviewed with Geiger and given him a booklet on his coaching philosophies.

Matta replied he was staying at Xavier for the long term. And, once again, said "there's nothing going on here." On Wednesday, Matta admitted that he had interviewed with Geiger and handed him a booklet.
