2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

As has been discussed on this site in the past, there were other factors that worked in our favor back when Matta was hired. As those factors have changed so has the level of recruiting - it seems to have become convenient to blame Matta's declining health, or his recruiting style. To me it's a dangerous assumption that things will be just fine when a healthy, new coach comes in because we're "Ohio State". This isn't 2004.

Again, what does our new coach offer a kid with options that he can't get at Power 5 schools in neighboring states? Not only the B1G schools, but strictly from a basketball standpoint we're now competing with Xavier and Butler, who were "mid-majors" when Thad came to Columbus. Now they're Big East schools who are doing a lot better than OSU on the hardwood. Thad had one of the best classes ever in just a few years. I'm not holding my breath that the new coach will be able to pull anything close to that off, anywhere near that quickly, if ever at all.
I'm unaccustomed to seeing this level of defeatism from you, Jake.

It's entirely unwarranted. No way should we be inferior to Dayton, Butler or Xavier. And if we get an adequate coach, we won't be.

Just sayin….There are quite a few posters worried about who our next basketball coach is going to be but they certainly did not like Matta. When I was defending him, I said be careful what you wish for and I stand by that.
Please do not give me but we kind of had Miller if Smith would have acted sooner because as Titus has written there is no guarantee that Miller would have come to Ohio State over Indiana and play second fiddle to the football program.
Call me concerned with some of the names I am hearing.. I will take Chris Jent and call it a day over some of the other names.

Next year is going to be rough no matter who the coach is. Gene gave Matta a chance to close the deal with some last minute '17 recruits and transfers and he came up empty (and lost some guys that maybe would have stuck around with a different coach). I think you could say right now if anything, waiting too long to make this change has hurt us more in the short term.

With next year being rough, Matta wasn;t going to get an extension and recruiting was not looking good. Whether we land a great coach in the next week, it was still the right move.

I agree that if we don't get a guy like Donovan, Mack, Marshall, etc., then I'd be OK with giving Jent the interim tag and taking time for a search next year. I also think there are some good smaller school coaches I would seriously consider and Danny Hurley would be one guy I'd seriously consider. I don't know if he can recruit, but he sure can coach.

As this gains steam, despite the mixed feelings I have about his ability to recruit at a program like Ohio State, he's somebody I could get behind. He's not a "whale", not that I ever thought we were getting one, but he's a very good.coach and seems like a good man. We could certainly do a lot worse. He fielded some damn good teams at ISU, including one that gave Thad's last really good team fits in the 2013 tourney. I think that was the game Ross won with a late three.

That's because you're still measuring Matta by the standard of his first 6 years, rather than the last 6 years.

The program has been trending downward and will likely bottom out in 2017-18 - would Matta ending with a 10-25 season change your opinion? Because only the blindest of homers can look at the current roster and expect some magical turnaround this season. How did the program get to this point? I'm not sure "how", but I know who presided over it. There are a lot of coaches who could do that.

The only problem with this change is that it should've happened 2 months ago, when there were more options.
