2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

Yes, that's basically what I remember. I don't follow recruiting close enough at all, but for some reason remember all of the fuss about he and that other kid (Bill Walker) going to KSU.

That's all I remember as well, I don't follow basketball recruiting on the national scale near as closely as I do football. That's generally the speculation (that there has got to be shady dealings) anytime a elite player goes to a not so elite program though

isu 5 years prior to hoiberg: 75-82 (28-56); 0 conference tournament championships; 0 national tournament appearances

isu 5 years under hoiberg: 115-56 (49-39); 2 conference tournament championships; 4 national tournament appearances

hoiberg: best winning percentage among isu's 20 head coaches
I love what he could bring in terms of an offensive system.

Here's ISU's KenPom adjusted offensive efficiency and adjusted tempo numbers Hoiberg's last three seasons:

2012-13: AdjO - 115.7 (8th in the country), AdjT - 69.8 (25th)
2013-14: AdjO - 118.3 (10th), AdjT - 71.7 (11th)
2014-15: AdjO - 116.9 (12th), AdjT - 69.9 (10th)

And that was with a bunch of transfers and low level recruits.

We're realistically looking at an NBA coach, likely one with prior college head coaching experience, or a no name from a small school (hence the Thad vetting).

Established college coaches at Power 5 programs aren't coming to tOSU in June, to coach a thin (to put it nicely) roster. Jay Wright? He'd have to be insane. Mack? Miller? The guy at Butler? Why?

Given that I'd prefer Donovan (that's a lie, I'd prefer Brad Stevens), but Hoiberg is probably more available.

This.

I get the feeling that if they whiff on an NBA guy, we are going to end up with some small school coach that leaves us scratching our heads.

Here's an article on Hoiberg's reliance on D-I transfers at ISU -- 13 of them (plus 3 JuCos) in 4+ years!

The strategy has obviously worked tremendously. Iowa State built a team that returned just four letter winners when Hoiberg took the job to a three-time NCAA Tournament team and a potential national championship contender. This isn’t quite Bill Snyder transforming K-State from the dead to the living, but the rapid ascent of the Iowa State program is something.

My only reservation with Hoiberg, as I stated a couple of pages back, is that much of his success at ISU was built on players who wouldn't get into most other programs..."second chance" kids. That won't fly in C-bus.
i think that's the primary risk/drawback with hoiberg. i know it must be difficult to recruit top players to ames, but hoiberg didn't exactly showcase an outstanding recruiting ability when he was there. he also stated that not having to recruit was a major benefit of being an nba coach, so i don't think he particularly enjoys recruiting like, say, meyer does. then again, most college coaches don't like recruiting... at all.

if hoiberg does become our coach, i would take special note of if and how quickly bazely re-commits or whether hunter/nance decides to be a buckeye. my guess is hoiberg would stick with goodwin and ask ahrens to rejoin.

i think hoiberg went the juco route because it's what he had to do. isu is a tough draw. if you go heavy on the juco route at a school like osu, though, then you shouldn't be the coach of a school like osu. going juco with available players like bazely, hunter, and nance means you've failed as a recruiter.

I would take Pete Kelsey from Winthrop way before him.. Kelsey has Ohio roots and he is a very good coach. He would be an excellent fallback guy if GS start striking out.

I was gonna say I think Kelsey would be a good option. Though I wonder if schools are now weary to pursue him after he backed out on Umass at the last hour.
