2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

I'd previously had doubts, but after what i saw against USC, we could take Clemson!

I disagree. Our offense sucked against USC. It was only a blowout because of probably the best defensive showing I've seen in college football in years. A halfway competent offense would have put up 50. And I'm not throwing this all on JT. Neither Dobbins nor Weber showed up. Could we have beaten Clemson? Perhaps, but it was by no means a certainty.

I'd submit the entire field is pretty much trash.

OSU should have been a competent option at 4, but they got Iowa'd. They'd get obliterated by 2014, 2015 OSU and probably lose to 2016 but 2017 OSU beating 2016 osu isn't an accomplishment.

Clemson (either year) would beat this version by about forty.
Alabama 2014 would beat this version by 20.
Oklahoma would be the lone outlier compared to their previous selves.

Bama got a "well they lost their only challenging game but they'll be a tough out in the playoffs" invitation , the kind that isn't usually handed out (see OSU 2015).

The problem with taking non conference champs is as mentioned before.

It basically gives an advantage when you're Alabama (or Ohio State last year) and don't have to play that extra game which you may lose. So in a way the division champs are "penalized" by having to play that extra game.

Wisconsin & Auburn weren't afforded the luxury by having to play a conference title game. Wisconsin then has the same amount of losses as Bama by having to play that extra game against a very tough opponent.....but Bama is awarded the playoff spot.....awarded for managing to fail to win their division in the SEC.

I really don't think that's an error. I think that's a laughable "they won during the first half of the decade" stat.
I suspect you are right that they did actually intend it that way, and only edited it for being unclear. Can't say I've ever heard of an initial two years standing in for a half-decade - or any other reference to half-decades for that matter. Always moving those goalposts.

I think a playoff would work nicely if they go to 6 teams; give the top two seeds a ‘bye’ and play it off. Maybe make being a Conf champ a requirement to be 1 or 2. That may never happen but I think 4 works in most years and adding four more is too much but 2 more teams...is basically the NFL model for determining the AFC and NFC champions.

Anyone who seriously claims that Alabama "passed the eye test" this season is a delusional homer. They are ridiculously talented on paper but im sure most would agree there was an underwhelming undertone to them this season. The SEC being weak besides Bama and UGA helped them manage through this with only 1 loss. A&M was garbage, Ole Miss Garbage, LSU average at best. Miss State was the "best" SEC team Bama played up until Auburn, and they escaped with a last minute TD in that one.

If we want to talk about the "tough out invite". For comparisons sake The 15 Ohio State team lost on a last second FG to a team that finished the regular season/CCG with 1 loss. Alabama got whipped a majority of the 2nd half and lost by 12 to a team that finished the regular season/CCG with 3 losses. Alabama is literally the only team who would possibly get into the playoffs on these terms. "Well its Alabama and they're usually really good" basically.

If next Monday's tv ratings are crap like the 2012 'bama/LSU it will probably signal the end of two teams from the same conference making the final four er follow the $$$.

2012 = 14.0
2015 Buckeyes/Ducks = 18.9
2016 Clemson/Tide = 15.8
2017 Clemson/Tide = 15.3
2018 'dogs/'bama = ???

Wishing esecpn all the best ...

Any numbers comparing the SF ratings?

Ratings wise, obviously TVs in the south are going to be tuned in

Feel the rest of the country could care less though. Georgia is a big program football wise but I don't think they captivate a huge casual TV audience.

Alabama's Nick Saban critical of College Football Playoff scheduling
Alabama coach Nick Saban lamented what he feels is a quick turnaround from the College Football Playoff semifinal games to the championship game, saying that it's difficult to come off a bowl game with only seven days to prepare.

"Someone has to think about the players," Saban said, "and not what's convenient for the media or TV."
Saban said that it wasn't until after 1 a.m. that Alabama began packing up to leave the Allstate Sugar Bowl after beating Clemson 24-6, which meant that the team needed to spend the night in New Orleans and return to Tuscaloosa in the morning.
If anything, Saban said he would like an extra travel day between the semis and the title game to account for the lost time.
Alabama will spend three days at home before going back on the road to Atlanta to prepare for Monday's game against Georgia.
Whether Saban will have a full complement of players remains to be seen.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Saban said injured offensive lineman Lester Cotton and linebacker Anfernee Jennings were still being evaluated and that he hoped to update their statuses soon.
Alabama has been hit severely by the injury bug at linebacker this season. Starting middle linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton was lost for the season with a knee injury, and linebackers Mack Wilson, Christian Miller and Terrell Lewis all missed significant time before returning for the final game of the regular season.

Rose bowl 14.8.

Sugar bowl 12.5.

Better, but still not as good as year one. Semifinal ratings will probably crash again next year when they cycle off new years day. I will be shocked if the championship is above 14. The highest metered market for both bowls was Birmingham, Georgia and Sooner fans couldnt be bothered I guess.

He’s crying about only having a week to prepare for a team he should have faced in a virtual elimination game in the SEC Championship? They probably spent at least a couple of days in their bye week scheming for a possible matchup against Georgia in the SECCG. Forgive me for not giving a single fuck about Nick Saban’s whining.

He’s a great coach, but he’s arguably the second biggest crybaby coach behind ol Jimmy.
