2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

Bama would not have got it ahead of us if we had only one loss.

Our road beatdown of Oklahoma last year got us into the playoffs.

They got in this year because they were the SEC champion. I doubt they'll get the same benefit of the doubt that Bama did this year if they're not the SEC champ.
1. Yep that's my point they had one loss and we had two. One of our losses being non conference

2. It got us in the playoffs in 16' but it held us out in 17'. IMO if its going to make or break us like that then play it safe and schedule someone like Oregon State or Wake Forest every year. The top end teams who can beat us leave us no room for error and considering how we seem to be guaranteed 1 big ten loss per year we have to be smarter.

3. See this is where I'm interested to see play out because I personally feel Georgia is going to be viewed much like Alabama is all year. Especially if Georgia/Alabama both meet undefeated and play a close Championship game

Report: Three new bowl games could be added in 2020, with Chicago and Myrtle Beach in the mix

Oh, you thought there were already too many bowl games? In the case, the NCAA Competition Committee reportedly has some bad news for you.

According to Brett McMurphy in a Facebook post, the NCAA Competition Committee will add three new bowl games to the bowl schedule beginning with the 2020 season. Chicago and Myrtle Beach are expected to be the destinations for two of the new bowl games, but the location of the third potential new bowl game is considered up in the air. Per McMurphy, Wrigley Field would host the bowl game in Chicago and host a team from the Big Ten and a team from the ACC (the home of the Chicago Cubs will also host a Northwestern vs. Wisconsin game in 2020). The Big Ten and ACC already have a bowl agreement with the Pinstripe Bowl to play a bowl game in Yankee Stadium. A bowl game in Myrtle Beach would likely include teams from Conference USA, the Sun Belt Conference or the MAC.

In addition to three new bowl games being included in the future bowl schedule, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee is expected to approve a limit on the number of bowl tie-ins any one conference can have. That tie-in cap is determined by the size of a conference. According to the report, the ACC and SEC would be limited to 10 bowl tie-ins (the ACC would also include Notre Dame). The Big Ten would be limited to eight tie-ins, the Pac-12 limited to seven, and the Big 12 restricted to no more than six tie-ins. Why those numbers for the ACC, SEC, and Big Ten vary despite having the same number of conference members in each is unconfirmed. The American and Conference USA can have seven bowl tie-ins, and MAC and Mountain West can have six, and the Sun Belt can have five. Keep in mind, each conference could end up sending more teams to a bowl game if space allows for it. These are just restrictions on the automatic tie-ins to bowl games that can be arranged by the conference.

Big Ten reportedly downplays interest in bowl game at Wrigley Field, leading to plans being put on hold

The Big Ten wants to get away from the cold, not embrace it.

That’s one takeaway from a report by the Chicago Tribune’s Teddy Greenstein, who details that a proposed bowl game that was being proposed for Wrigley Field is now on pause after Big Ten teams stated their preference for a postseason destination with a much warmer climate.

The breakdown in negotiations occurred because Cubs officials wanted a premier spot in the Big Ten bowl lineup — the ability to land the league’s No. 3 or No. 4 team. When Big Ten officials queried schools, the response was that they’d prefer a warm-weather destination.

“The Cubs wanted to have a higher-placed team and a potentially more excited fan base,” a source told the paper. “The Cubs said they’re not looking for a lower-tier bowl game; they’re very selective in what they do.”

Seems like this is something that would be GOOD for the conference.. not sure why we would spurn it.

Idk. This seems like the New Era Pinstripe Bowl that is played at Yankee Stadium. Doesn’t really seem like it’s good for anything. Sure doesn’t seem like it’s made any positive contributions to the B1G or ACC. Last year it was Iowa vs. Boston College. So I guess if you’re going to play a meh game vs a meh opponent that means nothing more than a “hey we played college football this year and won maybe one or two games more than we lost” pat on the back, might as well do it where it’s nice and warm in late December. Once you get down to the third or fourth place teams in a conference, who cares? Let them go play in somebody’s cornfield. Nobody is watching anyway. Even Illinois vs. Northwestern means more when it’s played there. The venues up north need to realize the reality (sad reality that I don’t necessarily agree with) that they aren’t getting a game that matters from the postseason. Money grab all you want Wrigley, if someone has a choice, they don’t want to spend a week of their winter in Chicago to play some mediocre team. If the B1G doesn’t want to play their bowl in the cold (which most are already used to,) good luck finding another conference from a better climate looking to do the same.

Disagree, southern bowl games put our teams at a constant disadvantage. I will take every game north of the mason-dixon that I can get... Maybe they arent playoff games but I am willing to take our 4th and 5th place teams getting better odds vs the SEC and PAC than none of our teams.. i really dont care who gets to go on vacation in warm weather for a week..
