2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

If next Monday's tv ratings are crap like the 2012 'bama/LSU it will probably signal the end of two teams from the same conference making the final four er follow the $$$.

2012 = 14.0
2015 Buckeyes/Ducks = 18.9
2016 Clemson/Tide = 15.8
2017 Clemson/Tide = 15.3
2018 'dogs/'bama = ???

Wishing esecpn all the best ...
ESPN joining with the sec might have been their downfall. They need to hype it to get their regular season ratings up. But now they are pushing for teams with no national appeal in the biggest games. They are gonna loose so much money on this playoff. I watched Oklahoma Georgia simply because I wasn’t doing anything. Didn’t even watch a second of game 2. I just went to bed and fell right asleep.

Pretty much the same boat, here. It was a holiday, after all. It'll be interesting to see how many TVs come on when there's no holiday associated with the game and everyone has to work the next day too.

Disappointed in seeing all the sour grapes here.

Bama and Georgia showed they definitely belonged in the playoffs. Claiming otherwise is foolishness. Congrats to them both, and look out for the Buckeyes next season!
Agreed. Bama and Georgia looked pretty good. It will either be Saban bitch slapping jr or the student has surpassed the teacher. Either way don’t care, won’t be watching. Still enjoyable to see dabo get put in his place and baker get shown up.

Thought this was a pretty dumb piece on SI, trying to devalue the B1G's bowl results:

https://www.si.com/college-football/2018/01/01/michigan-south-carolina-outback-bowl-big-ten

That said, we should resist putting too much weight on such a limited sample of competition. The Big Ten’s almost-across-the-board bowl triumph does not mean that it was the best conference in the country this season, or that the playoff selection committee made a mistake in undervaluing the Buckeyes’ championship in such a rigorous league.

I also noticed they edited out a really dumb error of fact, replaced by the bold below, which originally read "National championships won this half-decade (zero)". C'mon man, it's been all of three years! There is of course no mention of the edit.

Two more ways that don’t flatter the Big Ten: Points scored by its teams in the three years of playoff semifinals since Ohio State won it all (zero) and a respected power rating like S&P+ (the conference sat third entering bowl season).

i'm supposed to hate the SEC and I do...but slimy Swinney is my new favorite asshat to hate.
The state of South Carolina keeps a good grasp on the All Asshole Coaching Staff award - Stormin’ Steve Spurrier, Slimy Dab Swinney, and the new guy at USC Lite, Wild Willy Mushmouth, join with ol’ Purple Face Kelly to round out my list of coaches you’d like to see eat a bag of dicks.

No, just stating facts as never thought the Buckeyes deserved to make the playoffs. Repeating, in a year where there were no dominating teams, no conference should have (2) teams in the final four. Alabama made the playoffs basically because they are Alabama and totally skewed/biased pre-season polls. They played nobody, except an ugly loss to Auburn, taking into consideration the SEC/ACC were totally overrated this year, especially Clemson.

It is what it is as someone already mentioned, a perfect storm for Alabama.

"Sour grapes" er jealousy does apply to the Buckeyes not having the good fortune to play Mercer/The Citadel, etc. before ttun every year. Yes, in the past folks could easily argue Alabama/LSU/Arkansas, three teams from the same division were the top (3) teams in the country, but those days are longgg gone!

>

Again, apologies to Wisky who had to play Ohio State while the Tide rested at home. btw, Wisky will definitely be rated higher than Auburn in the final rankings. As always, take away college football and Alabama has nothing to crow about so hopefully the 'dogs won't crush their dreams! :biggrin2:

Yielding back the balance of my time ...

I don't remember another team getting into the playoff despite not having a single Top 10 win or winning their own division.8D

Bill Hancock: "To qualify for the playoff, teams need to play tough schedules against good teams -- that is the way for all teams to stand out and be ranked high by the committee. UCF is an excellent team, but you still have to take into account who each team played and defeated during the regular season."

Really Bill, teams need to play tough schedules? Did you even look at Alabama's schedule this year?

Delaney and the B1G need to reconsider that 9th conference game. I like the idea but if we're playing another FBS team and certain conferences *cough* ACC/SEC *cough* are scheduling Mercer and The Citadel (and rewarded for it!!), then that doesn't bode well for the B1G in future playoff rankings. Why risk a potential loss to another conference foe (Iowa) when we could play the University of Dayton?

The fact that this point has been raised on TV and written word is fascinating to me. IF the B1G's results this year in the bowls is to be discarded, then it shouldn't get as much play as it's getting.

You're really going to argue outside Bama and Georgia that the conference is any good? Sorry, it is trash... results don't lie. SEC is a weak conference.

Auburn's gotta be thinkin' WTF !!!

Seriously, as a few others have mentioned including me Wisky should have got the 4th seed as the only good team 'bama played they lost and Wisky at least played in their conference championship. IOW Wisky had to play a really good team whereas 'bama rested at home.

C'est la vie! Go 'dogs!

UCF too... they have a legit claim as NC at this point imo. The 2 teams that will play for the mythical NC both lost to Auburn...

This quote from CFP head idiot is pretty hilarious...

I really don't think that's an error. I think that's a laughable "they won during the first half of the decade" stat.
