2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

We might have seen the end of Out Of Conference powerhouse matchups early in the season. Why would Ohio State schedule the likes of Oklahoma, Texas or USC on the second game of the year if an early loss would take away the Mulligan of a loss to an Iowa or a Wisconsin? Yes it is nice for recruiting to be in those matchups but it is also good for recruiting to be in the playoff. The pick of Alabama is going to hurt the real people who control College football, the TV networks.
3 teams would have gotten in over Alabama had they scheduled a D2 team over a powerhouse game. That's what this decision means.

If Ohio State trades Oklahoma for Mercer. Likely in. Certainly in if they trade Iowa for Mercer
If USC trades Notre Dame for Mercer. Easily in.
If Auburn trades Clemson for Mercer. IN.

JOKE

In hindsight, I think the path for tOSU to make the playoff this weekend was 1) Auburn beats Georgia and the committee doesn't want to put 'bama and Auburn both in because we just saw that matchup, and 2) tOSU makes a statement in beating Wisky badly (see 2014).

Neither happened and here we are. I'm not even mad. It's been a fun season and next year's team should be good and pissed off. :mad1:

I think the 31 point loss is part and parcel why we are not in it, and I agree wholeheartedly. I don't particularly care what anybody else says as reasoning.

If margin of victory isn't supposed to make much of a difference, partially because they don't want teams running up the score, why should margin of defeat be so important?

It would be a pathetic day for college football when some coach late in the season is trailing in a game and has the thought: "We're down by two scores in the middle of the 4th quarter, but we can handle a defeat and still be in the playoff race as long as the margin doesn't get too large, so I'll just run out the clock instead of throwing the ball, which could result in a turnover as well as stopping the clock, both of which would result in more possessions for the opponent which could make the final score an unacceptable margin of defeat for the playoff committee."

I understand that it was a bad performance and that's a factor in the body of work, but the 31-point margin became a bigger issue a couple of weeks ago when ESPN first realized that a Bama-Buckeye beauty contest was a real possibility for the final playoff spot, and began constantly harping on it on their broadcasts in an attempt to sway the committee.

Yeah I love how every year the talk was margin of victory is not a factor till this year when they needed to use it to make their argument.

Quality wins? - Ohio State, Auburn should be in over Alabama
Conference titles? - Ohio State and USC should be in over Alabama
Eyeball test?- At least Auburn should be in over Alabama
One of these three teams actually beat Alabama just for kicks

So tell me what test the committee used to get Alabama in?

The fear test. The fear that some deranged Gump would poison their dog (or kid) in retaliation. Our fans get an unjustifiable bad rap, but I guarantee that outside of a few morons on Twitter making asses of themselves, absolutely nothing is happening over our being left out. You think that would be the case at Alabama?

I promise you the fucking Gump President would be holding some ludicrous press conference tomorrow to denounce the decision. I doubt Drake even mentions it.

That's an interesting observation. Unfortunately, it happens to be the wrong one.

UCF @ Clemson
USC @ Oklahoma
Cheese @ Georgia
Ohio State @ Alabama

I am comfortable with OSU being left out because I genuinely do not believe they are the best team in the country this season. And I don't believe that either of us really thinks for one second that UCF is the best.

What drives the argument for eight teams is the controversy at the margins. Who should be the 4th team? But that isn't the point of the playoff. The point is to make sure the best team is in and I think one of the top three is that team.

Sure, you can include UCF and USC, and eventually you will get a 1985 Villanova or a 2003 Florida Marlins as NC.

And at what cost? The cost is watching OSU get thumped by 31 points at Iowa and saying no problem. That game doesn't mean anything. We just need to win in Indy.

That game meant everything. Every game means everything in CFB. And it is the only sport where that is still true.

So let's fuck it up.

And by the way, you left out #7 Auburn. And Penn St can make a case. So let's go to 16.
