2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

I've said this repeatedly and haven't seen anything this season to change my mind - the offense, as a whole, runs better with JT. It ran better with JT than it did with Braxton and it runs better with him than Cardale. Maybe that's because Miller and Jones are transcendent talents in certain respects; absolutely they are. JT is not the equal of Braxton's feet or Cardale's arm, but the offense doesn't bog down and become either the Braxton Miller Show where everyone else stands around and waits for him to save the day or Cardale's Homeric-level Heroic 45-yard effortless back foot TD throws. Both of those are fantastic but they're not the foundation for an effective/efficient offense.

I keep thinking the same thing but Coach Meyer is there everyday and he seems to feel differently. He is obviously seeing something different in practice, so I hope we see it on the field soon too.

I THINK CARDALE JONES CAUGHT THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL WORLD BY SURPRISE, WHEN HE WAS THE QB AGAINST WISCONSIN LAST YEAR AND ALSO THAT INCLUDED ALABAMA AS WELL. THEN THE PERFORMANCE OF ELLIOT IN THOSE 3 GAMES WAS SOMETHING THAT NO ONE COULD SEE COMING.

I GAVE A LOT OF CREDIT TO THE COACHING STAFF FOR THE WAY THEY CAME UP WITH AN OFFENSIVE SCHEME THAT NOBODY COULD STOP.KUDDOS TO HERMAN AND WARRINER FOR PLANING THAT ONE UP. NOW ITS EIGHTS MONTHS LATER AND OTHER TEAMS ARE TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO TRY AND STOP US. THAT WILL BE ONE BIG HURDLE TO OVERCOME.

TO ME, OHIO STATE HAS TO MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHAT QB WILL BE THE STARTING QB FROM NOW AND TO THE END. THERE IS SO MUCH TALENT ONE THIS TEAM, MORE SO THAN I HAVE EVER SEEN. WE JUST HAVE TO HAVE AN OFFENSIVE PLAN, AT TO WHEN AND WHERE TO USE IT. SURE..........THE OFFENSIVE LINE STRUGGLED A BIT AGAINST HAWAII, BUT WITH 2 OR 3 DAYS THAT THEY HAD TO WORK WITH, WHAT COULD YOU EXPECT. "GO BUCKEYES''

I'm surprised that we are doing the dual QB thing to be honest as BOTH QB's said pick one and go with it (they didn't care who it was just not sharing). I know UFM is there everyday and he's 1000x smarter at football than everyone, myself included, but in saying that I do sense that he's waiting for JT to take over but hasn't seen enough. I also think that UFM is having a hard time making the decision permanent because he loves the two QB's so much. I mean I get it and I would have a hard time picking between both players as well from a personal stand point. We will see how this upcoming saturday goes because if we have another sloppy day I know I personally will blame the lack of continuity at the QB spot as the culprit.

While we rolled up big points on VT we left a lot of points out there on the field and couldn't get out of our own way. Then we face Hawaii a few days later and looked even more sloppy, again had trouble staying out of our own way with high snaps and missing wide open WR's, and once again left so many points out on the field.

A deeper Issue to our offense (that the QB is apart of) is we have so many weapons that we are trying to get them all touches. IMO you just have to start narrowing who is on the field and roll with it. Example, we know Braxton is our best H, Elliot our obvious RB, Vannett our TE, Thomas our WR, and probably Jalin Marshall our other best WR. Well roll with them until one is just too tired to do it and then replace the one who's tired and can't go. This way we put in Samuel at H or RB, Weber at RB, Smith/Cambell/Wilson/Dixon at WR. We are constantly rotating people and I don't think it's going to make us any better in the long run for doing it as it's impossible to get a feel for our game when we rotate people.

I think the announcers said it best during the game this week when they said (paraphrasing) "They (Ohio State) are trying to go for the big play and make things happen. Big plays happen from normal play calls with big time playmakers. "

I agree, but do you have to shout? My ears are ringing after that.

I forgot about that and I'm surprised I forgot because it couldn't be any more true. Play calling needs to settle down and realize it's all set up around zone read and it always will be. Also can we not run the toss sweep 10 times per game please? The toss sweep seems like its one of those things that works best when it's used 4 or less times a game with lots of fakes mixed in. That said if our QB's don't get near 60% completion then running the ball will be all we really have

If you watch Conner Cook, he does a lot of tricky stuff with the RBs, fakes and so forth to confuse the defense. That comes with reps. I wish we would just stick with Jones no matter what and let him become very comfortable with his OL and everyone else.

JT was just as off as Cardale was (if not more so) on Saturday. He had a chance early to come in and provide a spark (if not send a strong message that he should be the starter); instead, he badly missed some wide open receivers.

Problem with coming in off the bench is the level of expectations and game speed. It's not like he started the game and had a few series to settle in and find a groove. He was expected to come in and score immediately (which he did) and continue to score on every drive. Cardale had a quarter and a half to prove his salt before getting sat down. Barrett had only a few minutes of a look at.

I just think we're trying too hard to be fair to everyone and thereby hurting the teams possibilities. Unfortunately there comes a point where someone needs to win the job and we all thought the start of the season was that point. A starter needs to be named, and put the hurt feelings aside. They don't have an identity because of it. Coming into this season we had 2 Heisman QBs, right now we have none.

We have 8 games to figure this thing out before the MSU game. I have not been too impressed with either QB. JT missed some throws that he normally would not have. I will throw the game against Hawaii out because of the very short week. They have to show something against N. Illinois.

With any question about the QB play we have to look at the WR play. We are missing Evan Spencer and Devin Smith more than we though we would.

Not a big fan of the only game left on the schedule is MSU thing. Things need to be figured out well before we play them. I don't want to see a game against Illinois, Minnesota, or PSU still in question heading into the 4th quarter. It's not that I don't appreciate a hard fought victory. I just don't want to see us let teams hang around because we can't get get the snap count right or we commit turnovers. I also don't want to see some knucklehead taking any cheap shots on our guys in an attempt to become a cult hero either. Not to mention that the Buckeyes are often the biggest game on the schedule for a lot of teams we play, even without being the defending National Champions. That's the problem with that douche in Arkansas comments. The Buckeyes will get everyone's best game. Other than Toledo who cares enough about Arkansas to take them seriously?

Yea, I'm fine treating the string of 3 mid-majors as tune-ups... and that seems to be exactly what Urban was doing with Hawaii... but it needs to be figured out going into conference play.
It definitely needs to be figured out by the time Cult comes around.
