2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

Cardale is the man right now. Time to create a scheme around him instead of expecting him to play the option game

I would agree, except the presence of the inside zone read is a staple of Urban Meyer's base offense and the main thing that's helped our backs gain 6+ ypc for the past 3 years. Basically, Cardale needs to be more decisive with it and make the correct reads. We need the offense to run it, the C and RG to return to form, and Zeke to exploit it.

The "right now" part is the problem with changing the play book to suit him.

If the spot is up for grabs, dumping the optin is pointless as JT could earn his spot back and they would have to bring the option back as a staple. Either cement Jones as the starter and adjust the plays, or force Jones to get better with the zone read and option.

Part of me wonders if the ideal situation isn't that Cardale starts - or at least features enough - to enter the Draft as a 1st round pick, and then JT gets full-time duties next year (and likely follows).
If JT starts all of this year, then you probably have the same situation all over again next year.
That said, it seems like current formula isn't working. Maybe start JT and run up the score -- then bring in Cardale part way through the 2nd with a 3 score lead (at least against Mid-Majors) ??
I don't know if reps with "first team" is really hurting that much... there's not exactly a set personnel among skill players. In game you're as likely to see a mix of 1st and 2nd stringers as not. And run blocking has been pretty awful -- not sure how that's affected by which QB is giving it to Eze.
The one area it could arguably affect is the Center snapping... but in shotgun... ? I mean, if it's high for Cardale... it's gonna be high for every QB on the roster?

Cardale's draft stock will take care of itself. Meyer's job isn't to get him drafted, it's to win football championships.

There have been mesh problems all over the place on the qb-rb exchange/fake.

Rewatched the first half again today and the combination of poor reads, slow decision making, drops and Hawaii zone blitz are what makes him look/play poorly. He has opportunities to step up in the pocket or underneath the rush but he stays back and eventually the rush gets there. Just not reading the D fast enough and getting the ball out in rhythm, at least not vs Hawaii. I think we might need a few slants and quick passes to get him going on time and then open it up.

That is what I saw too, bad habit of backing up and throwing off his back foot instead of stepping up into the pocket. Also, I felt like the 3 snaps were not bad, they hit Cardales hands and were drops. A couple of the sacks were on him not getting rid of the football and holding it too long.

It's only 2 games into the season, growing pains should've been expected. Working some kinks out, and the more I'm seeing him play this season, the more I'm getting comfortable with Cardale. The team will be fine, they're adjusting to playing actual games instead of practice and camps. Either QB will excel, the fans on the ledge, just RELAX, like Aaron Rodgers said. We still have the best O line coach in CFB along with the best HC and the best staff. Well hit our stride in due time

Reading a little bit into what Urban Meyer has been saying, I think he'd prefer Barrett as the QB but his performance hasn't justified it yet. I don't think we'll see them pick a guy and go with him until Barrett either takes the job back or runs out of time before they have to buckle down and get ready for the stretch run.

Agreed. If the job isn't JT's after Western Michigan, it won't be his job at all this season (baring injury).

I can see that as well. I kind of view the OOC schedule as being a preseason for OSU. MAYBE it could extend a couple of games into the B1G schedule (@IU and vs. MD), but the PSU game (week 7) should absolutely have a true starting QB. But I'm hoping that you're right and it's by the IU game that there is a true starting QB announced.

I have a feeling that if the Oline performed as well as the Dline performed against HI, we'd not be having this convo. Maybe it's not a bad thing for the Oline to take a bit longer to gel against the lighter part of the schedule in that it forces whoever is behind center to make quicker / better decisions... but a good bit of what I've seen thus far is common between both QBs and can be tracked back to the Oline play.

Hopefully we'll see them step things up significantly this week -- with a regular schedule to help them find their routine.

I agree, but nonetheless I wonder how much the future doesn't weigh on Urban's decisions.
I've been out as a JT guy since MSU last year (arguing he was better than Brax), and that hasn't changed.
But reality is that Cardale has proven himself as well... and he's currently the starter... Urban knows what he's doing better than any of us.

If we didn't have only two full days of practice after a Monday night road game against a tough opponent and Hawaii didn't have six full days of film study to scheme--and none of that "trying out new stuff" shit on our part--this likely would've been a 52-0 type game.

I THINK CARDALE JONES CAUGHT THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL WORLD BY SURPRISE, WHEN HE WAS THE QB AGAINST WISCONSIN LAST YEAR AND ALSO THAT INCLUDED ALABAMA AS WELL. THEN THE PERFORMANCE OF ELLIOT IN THOSE 3 GAMES WAS SOMETHING THAT NO ONE COULD SEE COMING.

I GAVE A LOT OF CREDIT TO THE COACHING STAFF FOR THE WAY THEY CAME UP WITH AN OFFENSIVE SCHEME THAT NOBODY COULD STOP.KUDDOS TO HERMAN AND WARRINER FOR PLANING THAT ONE UP. NOW ITS EIGHTS MONTHS LATER AND OTHER TEAMS ARE TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO TRY AND STOP US. THAT WILL BE ONE BIG HURDLE TO OVERCOME.

TO ME, OHIO STATE HAS TO MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHAT QB WILL BE THE STARTING QB FROM NOW AND TO THE END. THERE IS SO MUCH TALENT ONE THIS TEAM, MORE SO THAN I HAVE EVER SEEN. WE JUST HAVE TO HAVE AN OFFENSIVE PLAN, AT TO WHEN AND WHERE TO USE IT. SURE..........THE OFFENSIVE LINE STRUGGLED A BIT AGAINST HAWAII, BUT WITH 2 OR 3 DAYS THAT THEY HAD TO WORK WITH, WHAT COULD YOU EXPECT. "GO BUCKEYES''

I would agree. I think using the Hawaii game as any sort of benchmark for any of the team is a bad idea.

We'll see how Western Michigan goes and see if the kinks that a short week may have been responsible for disappear or improve.
