2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

I think VT is a tough D to make a decision against. There is no doubt that JT is a better runner and makes better decisions in the read option, but Cardale does things with his arm that shouldn't be possible and makes NFL scouts drool. VT packs the box and makes it hard for traditional running plays, which is why we saw so much of Zeke blocking for Cardale on the QB power. Cardale isn't going to break a 40 yard run like JT, but he is also more likely to Roethlisberger the first guy and scramble for 5-15 yards. I think Cardale will look better against a more traditional D.

Now that this big test is out of the way I wouldn't be surprised to see more of a QB rotation against weaker opponents. IMHO I feel better with Cardale behind center when MSU rolls around, but I think both guys are good enough to win the title. This might very well be the best QB room in college football history especially when you factor in that XBrax will probably throw for a handful of TD's this season as well.

Cardale has a big arm. However, his arm is only as good as his receivers speed. Without Devin Smith (fast and able to adjust), his cannon isn't needed regularly. I like that he can throw it away with ease, but the offense just didn't look smooth or fluid last night. That could be attributed to play calling or because of Jones not having Spencers and Smith.

Or it could be that that was a good defense va Tech put on the field.

Great decision by UFM. Cardale played well. Of course you could sit around and critique every play, or compare last night's performance with Cardale's playoff run, but why? In the team's first game, in a hostile environment ... against a good team ... with a great scheme.....and without starters on offense, defense and special teams, Cardale put the team in position to win by nearly 20 pts. I'm happy. (BTW, didn't they cover?)

Cardale really excelled last year against pressure and with VT's scheme he was the better fit for this game. That said, I must admit I think overall I'd personally have gone with JT. Props to him for stepping in so calmly and tearing it up the way he did when given the opportunity.

I've been a JT guy, and I was surprised/a little disappointed when Cardale ran out there - and that we didn't see JT til mop up time. I've also said that I couldn't be upset if Cardale was the guy. His ability to stretch and threaten defenses vertically is really important and he can see over defenses.

However, a big part of beating that bear was speed option to the edge and screens to the flat. VT was forcing the QB to keep and Cardale was getting about 3 yards. JT runs it once and goes for 40. I know that's too small of a sample size to prove anything, but we all know that JT excels at reading that play and has more speed. He is also more accurate and has better touch on those screen-type plays. JT's strength is efficiency with his legs and feet to keep the chains moving. Cardale was 9-18, and we had to punt several times when he wasn't accurate. He did gain 99 yards rushing - and we don't know what JT would have done with those plays, but I suspect that 99 would have turned into 150.

We scored 42 points and won the game, so that's what is most important. Perhaps Cardale was the best choice for this game, but I have a hard time with setting JT and his 45 TD's over there on the sideline. But if the Buckeyes run through their schedule and get into the playoff with Cardale, you won't hear me complaining. I just feel that at some point the Buckeyes will get in a game where efficiency would serve them better. We'll see.

They each have their strengths and weaknesses. Cardale is not an option QB so we need to ditch that part of the offense when he is behind center. He sucked at the read and the speed options. Stick to Cardale's strengths if he is going to be the man.

I disagree. He picked up several key first downs on the option. I think CJ is effective at the option; however, he is much less likely to break a big one. Still, I'll take 5-10 yards a clip. What I like most about CJ is his ability to shrug off would be sacks, keep his eyes downfield, and with a flick of the wrist toss a dart right on the money 50 yards down the field. With all that bring said, I forgot how well JT can spin it. He throws a beautiful ball.

They can run the option with Cardale. They just have to choose their spots more judiciously. It's more effective in the red zone where breakaway speed isn't as much of a factor and his size and ability to gain yards after contact becomes more of an asset. Run the option in your own end, and teams will gladly sell out on the pitch man and force him to keep it. Run it on your opponent's 10-yard line, and a team should think twice about that strategy.

Lots of us talking about how we should avoid the option with CJ or pick our spots with the option... To me this tells me that to fully better use our offense we probably should be going with JT. A underrated part about CJ is his confidence (telling VT's crowd to get louder on the first snap) and his ability to keep things light as he's always making others smile and is always in a great mood.

Two very different leadership styles no doubt. Jones is a guy that can joke with his guys and put a smile on their face when things are tough. JT is a guy that is a bit more militant, reserved, and focused. Both approached are effective.

I think much of what we saw with Jones in the final 3 games last year can be attributed to the creative genius of Tom Herman. He knew that he had to shift this team from an option based team to a more conventional style offense. He came up with some crazy good plays that utilized Jones' talents. It will be interesting to see the play calling next week. Will we shy away from the option, or continue to run it?

It seemed like they were poking and prodding in the first half. Testing what's going to be working, and what's not. Then, the second half started..... Everything started to come together, and the offense really kicked it up a gear. Virginia Tech is about the most perfect team we could possibly face to prepare ourselves for teams who want to try and "pin their ears back" and bring the pressure. This performance will set the tone for the rest of the season, and it didn't take a loss to do it this time around. That's a scary thing to think about.
