2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

After listening to Urban's presser today it sounds like the starter this week is up in the air. Cardale did not grade out according to Urban so there must have been some mistakes on film that we don't get to see. Maybe Urban is going to play this "We don't know" card for as long as he can to keep the opposition guessing, or maybe he is being honest, it is hard to tell.

It be awesome if they could push each other all year but not have the team choose sides or anyone start making noise how they were wronged. Imagine if you had guys working the whole season on getting better being pushed by each other how good they both will be by the end of the season.

We have 8 games to figure this thing out before the MSU game. I have not been too impressed with either QB. JT missed some throws that he normally would not have. I will throw the game against Hawaii out because of the very short week. They have to show something against N. Illinois.

With any question about the QB play we have to look at the WR play. We are missing Evan Spencer and Devin Smith more than we though we would.

This. The amazing adjustments and catches made by Smith on Jones' long ball is really starting to show early this year. No doubt Jones has a great arm, but without a proven receiver, he seems to get a bit lost on his reads. At this point I would rather march down the field with accurate slants, curls, and tthrows to the flat, rather than going for the home run every other play. I just think JT gives us more of what we need with the personnel we have. QB isn't a one size fits all.

I said it in the game thread, and I'll say it again: three different guys taking snaps is two too many. Pick a starter, and stay with him. I don't care who it is. This rotation crap is hamstringing the offense. They can't get any continuity, and it's hurting Boren's play as well. There are tons of ways to get Braxton the ball without him taking fifteen snaps a game from the wildcat. Figure it out. You moved him to receiver. Get him the ball from there. Not to mention, wildcat snaps eliminate half the playbook, as well as taking much needed reps from the quarterbacks. I only want to see it maybe once a game in an ultra hurry up mode when the defense can't get set. Otherwise, tear that page out of the book.

I have to believe that the QB rotation ends very soon. Just not sustainable with the amount of reps either guy needs to improve and it keeps the offense from excelling at the short passing game that gets the playmakers into the open field. I still don't think the coaches really know how to utilize Jones in this system and it makes me question why they're fitting a square peg into a round hole.

As for the wildcat, I don't think that's going anywhere soon, but the amount of times they run it will decrease as the season goes on. I agree that they need to find more creative ways to get Miller the ball.

Part of me wonders if the ideal situation isn't that Cardale starts - or at least features enough - to enter the Draft as a 1st round pick, and then JT gets full-time duties next year (and likely follows).
If JT starts all of this year, then you probably have the same situation all over again next year.
That said, it seems like current formula isn't working. Maybe start JT and run up the score -- then bring in Cardale part way through the 2nd with a 3 score lead (at least against Mid-Majors) ??
I don't know if reps with "first team" is really hurting that much... there's not exactly a set personnel among skill players. In game you're as likely to see a mix of 1st and 2nd stringers as not. And run blocking has been pretty awful -- not sure how that's affected by which QB is giving it to Eze.
The one area it could arguably affect is the Center snapping... but in shotgun... ? I mean, if it's high for Cardale... it's gonna be high for every QB on the roster?

No doubt the OL is a big issue right now, maybe the key issue. The first team reps would still matter when working on which plays you're actually going to run and what packages you'd use out on the field, right? I get your point though, and it's certainly bigger than just the QB rotation.

I think this is spot on. All the issues I am seeing really have nothing to do with the QBs or who should be playing there. The OL needs to get their shit together before we can really even assess everything else. And the WR/TEs need to block better as well. And the coaching needs to tighten up, everything is dysfunctional and scattered.

This decision is something I feel will be a big impact on the year if the coaching staff is adamant on the current play calls and if the offensive line can't get it together. It's akin to the 2004 Zwick/Smith battle, granted we aren't starting the year off with 3 losses and both players are more talented than Zwick was.

We came into the year with the mantra that it doesn't matter who we start because of our strong, disciplined offensive line, and the incredible talents of Zeke. With the line struggling it's forcing a lot of changes to the backfield. Since they are sticking with Jones this week, I'm hoping he gets 70-80% of first team reps to build better cohesion. I get the feeling sometimes that Urban is just as confused as the rest of us. He cares so much for this team. He has one "son" that is doing everything in his (seemingly) final year to audition for the NFL and provide for his family. He has another "son" that played his ass off last season and only sat on the bench because of injury, but still has 2-3 seasons left.

URBAN MEYER: CARDALE JONES IS THE STARTING QUARTERBACK

59545_h.jpg,qitok=v37IdRN7.pagespeed.ce.MjxUzLvK3p.jpg

Neither Cardale Jones or J.T. Barrett set the world on fire during the ample playing time both were allotted during Saturday's 38-0 victory over Hawai'i.

Urban Meyer admitted during last week's call-in show that how he planned to handle the quarterbacks this season would be "a little unorthodox." This led some to speculate Meyer could rotate the starting quarterback by opponent.

That doesn't appear to be the case, at least for now. From Monday's presser:

Tim Shoemaker @TimShoemaker
Meyer: “Cardale is the starting quarterback. J.T. has not beat him out yet, but he will continue to have opportunities to do that."
