I think it's because most people/media have short memories. In King Cardale's case which is deservedly so, he led his team by tearing up Wisconsin, beating the SEC King and beating UofNike all when the media said he stood no chance... They also are quickly to forget that JT tore up MSU with surgical precision and that reigning #1 QB B. Miller was the best of the bunch for a reason and he was not #1 of QB depth chart going into the season because of seniority... IMO it all depends on B. Miller's shoulder. I don't think you lose your spot due to injury unless it is such an injury that will not allow you to play the position anymore...

Uh, yeah, he was. When Barrett stepped on campus Miller had already won B1G OPOY for the previous season, and Barrett had missed most of his senior year in high school due to injury...he was even redshirted in 2013 in favor of using then-redshirt freshman Jones in mop-up duty. Then when Miller got hurt and Barrett was given the chance to start and put up number better than Miller did in his two B1G OPOY seasons.

But how do you know Miller wouldn't have put up similar or better numbers than Barrett this year with that offense and developed weapons? No one knows that but the coaches still had Miller #1 going into camp....

No one knows, I'll agree. But the offense looked more balanced under Barrett than it did under Miller.
