2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

Given the conversation regarding Barrett's numbers, it seems relevant to note:

Miami (FL) rolled up 621 yards of offense against UC today, a week after Memphis booked 610 yards
Kent State lost 40-17 to Umass, ending the Minutemen's 12 game losing streak.

Comparing UC & Kent State this year to Buffalo & SDSU last year is completely unfair to two crappy teams last year. UC & Kent State really, really suck. Really suck.

Stony Brook passed for more yards than Ohio State did against Buffalo in week 3. Of course Baylor did in week 2. San Diego state gave up 361 passing yards to Eastern Illinois in week 1. 182 yards to Ohio State in week 2 and 367 to Oregon State in week 3. Only Air Force (on 12 attempts) and New Mexico threw for less yards against SDSU last year. Not the best comparisons.

Yeah, they were crappy, but both of those teams ended the season at 8-5. UC might have the worst defense in the nation (574 YPG allowed) and Kent State might be the worst team in the nation period (a 23 point loss to the team with the longest current losing streak in the nation).

I get it -- Barrett has looked really good. I am extremely impressed with his decision making and passing -- plus he's an effective runner. But....man...the competition was just so terrible. I need to see it against a couple halfway decent teams before I'm going all-in on JTB. The next couple games will be very telling for me -- both Rutgers & Ped State have respectable defenses. Then Sparty a couple weeks later.

Either way -- damn this is a nice problem to have.

What is good to see with JT is that he is making a ton of good decisions after going through progressions. He doesn't lock on to receivers as often as young QBs do and on top of that he seems to be throwing people open which is very impressive. To go a long with throwing people open he also throws the ball smartly too by throwing fades that are either going to be completed or we get a pass interference call.

We will see the next 2 weeks what he has though. Rutgers is good on defense and PSU should also be a decent test on the road at night. If he does what he's been doing the last few weeks to 4 of our next 5 teams we play he will probably go to NYC.

I thoroughly enjoy Buckeyeplanet and spend waaaaaay too much time on here reading and rereading all things Buckeye... But this wins the contest for Worst Thread on the Board. The mess my daughter cleaned out of the cat box tonight could throw for 250 yards and 3 TD'S against Cincy. Not knocking JT in any way, but we're seriously 13 pages into this topic after 5 games that consists of: a pedestrian came against Navy, a train wreck at home against VT, and then 3 straight wins against defenses that would make Big 12 defenses look like the Seahawks'. I honestly believe I'm now stupider for actually reading this thread.

The PSU game will also be a great test. Their offense is a hot mess, but the defense has actually been pretty good. I think statistically in line with a VT caliber defense. By far the 2nd best defense he will have seen if not the best defense, and on the road.

Here's my simple five second take on the issue of JT vs. Brax next year. Brax gives you 20% better running while JT gives you 80% better passing and IMO better decision making. I know it's a much more complex equation and that JT is benefitting from a much better defense, but I'm still firmly in the JT camp.

That's a fair assessment given what we have seen. However, reports all spring/summer where that Brax had been making real strides in the passing game. But, if JT continues to play at this level, wins out, and get some hardware (or a trip to NY), the staff is going to have an unenviable decision to make. Either way, it's a helluva problem to have.

I feel like I've heard that report about progress in passing game for Brax every single year I've watched him. And that's dating back to his days at Wayne as well. With the current cast of receivers, TE's, and RB's it would be hard for Braxton not to excel in this year's offense though. It will be an interesting dilemma to have. The read option game next year will definitely be off the charts.

And he has improved each year, to be fair.

Definitely. Just not the strides I thought he'd make in the passing game. His running ability is unmatched, no doubt. It's just crazy seeing a RS Freshman reading through his progressions like he's a Senior.
Indeed. It's apparent there was a reason Urban made JT his first QB target. The sky is the limit. I don't think Brax will ever be the passer JT is, but it's possible few QBs will be based on what we're seeing...

Throw in the durability factor, and I have a hard time seeing how Brax can come back and start provided that JT plays at this level for the rest of the season.
