2014 TSUN Football News

Does RR bring a real DC?

Let's say he does. Let's say he even brings in Mattison. I think that Michigan wins 10 games in 2011, and then wins the Sugar Bowl (or whatever - I'm not looking up which bowl game they made it to).

Oh [Mark May]....if they had kept him one more year, he could have beaten us. Wasn't that our Tressel-less year? Then they would have been stuck with him for another 4 years

I think that bowl game (and beating Ohio State) (actually, that whole season) is the only reason Hoke wasn't fired after the 2013 season. Rich Rod won 3, 5, and 7 games in his three years, while Hoke won 11, 8, and 7. Rich's seasons are trending upward (though, probably going to hit a ceiling before 10 wins), while Hoke's are trending downward.

RR could win in the B1G at a place like IU, Maryland, Rutgers, Illinois, Minny or Purdue.

Places completely willing to have a gimmicky system, 8-9 wins is good and can live with the losing years in between.

That said, those jackholes in Minny ran Glenn Mason out of town because he couldn't get them to "the next level" so maybe strike them from the list.

Point being, RR is a good mid major type of coach. The scUM job is too big for him.

I think there is a difference between competent and winning at TTUN. Rodriguez is a good coach. A competent coach. But obviously not a guy that could win at TTUN.
Add "at Michigan" to my quote.

He was neither competent at michigan nor could he win there given the factions against him. Those were linked issues but his big East recruiting (in talent and scheme), assistant coach hires and media presence doomed him as much as the subversion from the hypocritical Michigan men.

That's probably all true. I've got relatives out in Tucson so I've often wanted to see Arizona succeed. It's not going to be easy but I like where things appear to be headed.

total byproduct of osu's unique situation that year. and even then, they were lucky to beat osu. a typical osu team slaps them around and relegates them to playing at 11:00am on new year's day and getting ran by a mid level SEC team.
And skipping an inevitable beatdown by Wilson and Wisconsin during the season and in the ccg.

And earning a ratings based bcs berth against another unworthy bcs foe that outplayed them by a large margin. The incredible luck of that season was never greater than that game, where the denard moon balls were magically dominant and game ending calls were overturned to give Hoke new life.

This. To say nothing of the fake FG that got Michigan back into the game, on which play none of the 2-3 penalties on Michigan were flagged.

Rich Rod is 53-15 is the three years before & three years after his time at #Michigan and that includes 4 Ws over Top10 teams.

Rich Rod is 5-0 & #Zona's leading RB is a FR; QB is a FR; two leading receivers are sophs; top tackler is a soph & top coverman is a FR.

I didn't think highly of Rich Rod coming out of WVU because his most successful teams were predicated on blowing out White & Slaton from overuse. There was also the part where he bailed on his alma mater, didn't tell his players goodbye, and shredded a few filing cabinets worth of docs on his way out the door. God bless him, he did have a button though, so he really 'got' The Rivalry.

That said the guy can coach. Would he have restored Michigan back to perennial Top 10 team? Maybe no. But I think he could have been a lot more successful than he was if curmudgeons like Lloyd Carr hadn't been (allegedly) actively working to undermine him and Bill Martin (GBYBM YMSOB) had tossed him another $500K to pay his assistants.

I agree with this. IIRC, the general consensus here upon his hiring was that he would eventually maintain latter-day Lloyd Carr status quo as far as typical W-L, with the potential to sprinkle in the occasional 10-11 win team. Along with struggling with his rivals. Of course we all laughed at scUM fan's prediction of impending doom for the rest of the B1G as RR was gonna spread-n-shred the entire conference. I don't think many initially thought he'd flame out as spectacularly as he did, however, after a few months it became pretty evident he was in over his head.

The thing is, nobody back in the RR days saw the B1G becoming the sludge fart it is now. Who knows where they'd be with him if they'd kept him around and he was able to compete in this hollowed out version of the B1G...
