His stay there was a train wreck. Everyone saw it, and Buckeyes everywhere rejoiced. But he wasn't 100% culpable for the twin wreck. He had help. You can look at 2011. He said on his farewell speech that they were going to be exponentially better in '11...

I don't think he's the greatest by any means, but he's not complete dog[Mark May] either. What he did at WVU and what he's doing at Arizona aren't accidents. He can coach circles around that tubby bastard they have up there now.

scUM is toxic. Pure and simple. Until the folks in the ivory towers get out of the way, I don't think anyone can succeed there.
Now we are getting somewhere. :) I agree the Michimen were very culpable and arguably more responsible for their downfall than Rich. Any coach can fail but they ensured his failures were multiplied and secured an unqualified pal to handle the rebuild afterwards. I don't think RR is incompetent overall though I think that is a fair description of his efforts at Michigan.

You can win there as the resources and brand are still strong despite severe deflation by the pizza destroyer. You cannot win there without the presence and polish to handle the boosters, media and academia.

Les Miles was the chosen one for the search committee to succeed Carr. His grass chewing, likeable, simple minded demeanor would have surely bumped heads with blue hairs let alone the academic types who view football as an affront to their ivy league atmosphere.I think he would have recruited, hired, developed and won enough to forgive his quirks.

Pat Narduzzi is the epitome of the next Bo yet he could never be hired, not just because of his current employer but also his demeanor. They sorely need someone to restore the toughness and swagger of that charmin soft program and fan base. The fringe fans and big wigs at the school would never stomach a coach looking to deploy "intentional roughness."

They are crippled by looking for the next Bo, yet I'm not sure Bo reincarnated under another name would actually succeed in the current environment at Michigan and CFB (the latter would lambast his post season results)

Let's not get too far off base here. Any program with the history of Michigan is going to suffer from, "that's not how we do it," thinking. (which is the same as "Michigan Man") The knock on Cooper's hire was that "he doesn't know Ohio State football," which eventually turned into, "He doesn't understand the Michigan game." Ignored was the fact that he expanded recruiting, brought in NC level talent - in fact, the 2003 NC team is recruited by Coop - and left the program in better shape than he found it. When Tressell was announced there had to be more than me saying, "Who the hell is Jim Tressell and what does he know about Ohio State football?" Winning changes perceptions and winning alone overcomes "that's not how we do it here."

Just to stay a little closer to base then, Cooper went 2-10-1 in The Game and up until the very end stuck to the notion that it was just another game. That is the only thing that got him fired, it had nothing to do with him not fitting in culturally except our culture is that of winning so in that sense if you want to say he was run off because of a "that's not how we do it here" attitude then yeah.....we don't tolerate losing here, especially in The Game so he never did fit our "culture".

Cooper had players with 0.0 GPAs and kids dealing. There was a lot that went into that decision.
