Cooper's hire was justified by, "He beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl." That was to justify why Ohio state would hire someone who played at Tulsa, coached at Arizona and spoke with a Southwest twang that sounded foreign to Ohioans. Fans were looking for another Woody, someone who knew Ohio, the Midwest and Ohio State. Which Is why I maintained that:
"The knock on Cooper's hire was that "he doesn't know Ohio State football," which eventually turned into, "He doesn't understand the Michigan game.""
When Coop was named this is what I heard and it bears a striking resemblance to those who complained that RR wasn't a "Michigan Man."
All that aside, Coop took over a program that was going into a slide. Earl and the B-Ball coach had created a toxic atmosphere in Cincinnati that made recruiting difficult - a fact that Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn state and Michigan State took advantage of. Coop changed that overnight and it gave Tressel a great head start in continuing to get great athletes out of this corner of Ohio.
