2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

Herbie has us as his #4.

In case you haven't caught on yet, that's the new ESPN troll for us.

Fowler and Herbie started it in the MSU game, Trevor Matich rolled with it all week and now it's become the "talking point".

If they talk us up, people argue, if we lose they get to talk about how right they were. If we keep winning they get to talk us up until we eventually get left out of the playoffs. If they talk us up and we MAKE the playoffs then they get to talk about how right they were all along.

No-lose "journalism".

I'm just going to keep deluding myself and thinking that people are starting to notice how freaking GOOD this team is. And they haven't even started to peak yet. When they finally put together four full quarters... Look out.

I dont see it. I think it will be Oregon/Bama, FSU, MSU. All of Mississippi States signature wins have turned out to be against garbage teams, but their loss is to Bama, not Va Tech.
Maybe but, as it stands, we have a better win than Miss State. Come this week their only good wins will be at home against a 3-loss Auburn team that just got curb stomped by Georgia. Our best win will be on the road against a Michigan State squad that will probably be back in the top 10 this week. Not only that but the Buckeyes played a better OOC schedule than MSU. The rankings are going to be pretty interesting this week.

Predicting:

1. Bama - convincing win over MSU
2. Oregon - because only Big Ten teams fall on a bye week
3. FSU - a sloppy win, as usual
4. TCU - They stick around despite a 4pt win
5. MSU - new loss is better than losing to vtech. Stillno big wins (which is most imporrant to the committee)
6. OSU - good job in crappy weather

Here's my best guess for Tuesday.

1. Alabama
2. Oregon
3. Florida State
4. Mississippi State
5. TCU
6. Ohio State
7. Baylor
8. Ole Miss
9. UCLA
10. Michigan State or Georgia

While I tend to agree that will be the actual ranking since Oregon was idle and everyone still wants to slob the SEC's knob...here would be my rankings:

1. Oregon: One loss to a pretty good Arizona team and it was with their OL pretty much out and early in the season. I would be willing to believe it was a fluke until I see something proving otherwise.

2. FSU: I think they have so many cracks in the armor that I cannot in good faith believe they are a top 4 team...but until they lose, I have to hold them up here. I hate it but they have not lost.

3. Alabama: Good win tonight but here is why I will not kiss you SEC jock...should have lost to LSU last week, should have lost to a mediocre Arkansas team, and a loss to an Ole Miss team I don't find all that impressive. Plus a close one to a poor WVU team in Week 1. I do not think Sims is impressive, the defense is down, and the OL has holes. Win out from here against Auburn and in the championship...then I will move you up.

4. OSU: I know this will either seem like homerism or piggy-backing off Frosted Tips, but we are a damn good team with more balance than any team with O/D/ST. The box score was way closer today than the game actually was. I watched the other games and frankly, I felt Bama and FSU should have lost (same for TCU)...watching our game, I felt Minny eeked it out to make it seem closer than the game actually was. We dominated the entire game but handed them a few gifts. Our loss is bad and yes, we came close to a PSU team at night that thinks we are their rival...but we won against a raucous crowd on the road at night. And against a 6 win team with a win over UCF (currently), not a 3 win Kansas team.

5. TCU: Kansas played you close today...I am sorry, but that cannot just be ignored. Kansas is one of the worst teams in college football. Nor can your near loss to West Virginia (31-30). They will likely beat Texas and Iowa State to finish out but their resume better get looked at again. To reiterate, I am not impressed with their conference...you can score, congrats. Name a big non-conference win? They can't, same as the B1G.

6. Baylor: Bad loss to a bad WVU team. A 61-58 shootout win against TCU. Zero non-conference wins to note. However, I think they can move up a lot if they proceed to beat out OK State, Texas Tech, and KSU. I don't think any of those teams are great but if they beat all of them, then it would be impressive. Much higher ceiling than TCU imo.

- Rest of my order goes Ole Miss, Michigan State, Georgia, and Wisconsin (respectively). I know people will call me a B1G optimist for that but consider this: ASU lost (to a below 500 Oregon State team), Auburn got spanked by a 3-loss Georgia team, UCLA lost to Utah, KSU has been shaky all year and got whipped by TCU, and Arizona lost to USC and UCLA (and should have lost to Cal). As for the B1G, MSU was a couple plays away from beating #1/2 Oregon at their place at night and lost to a hot Ohio State team. Wisconsin lost to LSU in the first week (should have squashed them), lost a fluke game to Northwestern (ask ND, it happens), and dominated tonight with the best RB in the country...slight notation, the teams right behind them have equal right to the spot. The rankings are incredibly susceptible to change with the remaining schedule but that is my feeling after this week.

This is about what I expect, but how does that "no big wins" thing put Miss St. above us ... we have a big win.
In any case, I think the stage is now set for the Sugar Bowl to be an SEC rematch.

TCU still has no big wins. Right now, they've played one ranked team that hung 61 points on them. That should put them behind both Baylor--the ranked team that put 61 on them--and Ohio State. I don't get the love for them. There big early season wins have all been exposed as mediocre opponents.
