2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

On th flip side, I think Texas was probably better when we played them than when we scheduled them.
No probably about it. They were average at best and became the best OOC matchup in the past decade. Meanwhile Da U & USC were both scheduled at the height of their reigns and didn't live up to their own standards (Miami slid further than USC).

The only way to line up elite teams is to schedule last minute neutral site games and cost yourself and your hometown major revenue.

Well I just was informed by a good source of mine about scheduling of out of conference schools. It seems that these schedulings are already made up some years in advance from one university to another. So I guess in all reality, there is nothing we can do about it. That is just the way it is.

Kips, you can't be serious. Have you seen our OOC over the last decade (Washington, Texas, USC, DaU, VaTech), all of whom were playing good to championship-level ball when we scheduled them. We also have home/away series with Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma, TCU, Oregon, and Boston College over the next decade (and a game with Oregon State thrown in to boot). Hell, in 2022 and 2023 we play both Notre Dame and Texas, and in 2023 we also play Boston College. That will definitely be the hardest OOC schedule in college football in 2023...

With the exception of Texas and USC, every one of those 'big time, championship level' teams we scheduled 10-15 years ago SUCKED when we actually played them. STOP SCHEDULING TEN YEARS IN ADVANCE.

The B1G needs to stop making the conference schedules so far in advance as well.

You simply cannot avoid scheduling big-name teams that far in advance because their schedules get filled quickly...the "you snooze, you lose" rules definitely applies here. Ours is by no means the only major program that fills its OOC schedule that far in advance...

 why didn't anyone else think of this ?

You can play in Jerry world , line up 1-2 annual powerhouse matchups and hope they work out, or wait until the last year or two and pray someone good has a cancellation.

Maybe it'd be good practice... become familiar with the facilities etc. ... you know, since Jerry World will be the NCG Final destination for the next 20 years.

It's impossible to gauge how good a team will be in 10 years. Most programs will have a new coach before that matchup occurs. Some programs will have changed coaches a few times in that time span. Even if you try to schedule a team that's been good for awhile, like 'Bama, good luck getting them to come to your house to play...ain't gonna happen. Other than the Ped State game in 2011, I think 'Bama has only traveled to one out of conference opponent's stadium in the last 12 years and it was against Duke.

I agree that marquee games need to be scheduled far in advance. There are other things though that can be done.

NO two in-state teams per year. Ditch one of the Fredos and replace it with a top mid-major or a mid-tier P5 team. I'd much rather be playing Colorado State or Oregon State than Kent State this year, and one of those teams has a far, far greater opportunity to rise up and be a quality win when the game comes around than does any Fredo school not named juggalo state.

And of course, none of this matters if the Big Ten unfucks itself and we finish the regular season with a top ten matchup with Michigan followed by a top ten matchup with Wiscy or the Corn. But hey, some people are still butthurt over the Cooper years and want to see UM in the dirt even if it hurts Ohio State's playoff chances.

It has nothing to do with the Cooper years. It has everything to do with the fact that they're Michigan.

Hey, I'm enjoying every minute of their season this year. I just realize that it's in Ohio State's best interests for it to stop. The Cooper years have been avenged and evened out, and it's time for this to actually go back to being a rivalry on the field (which again, is in Ohio State's best interests). I've been an Ohio State student or alum through the the latter half of the Earl Bruce years, the Cooper years and the Tressel-Meyer years. The rivalry was a hell of a lot better and more enjoyable under Earl Bruce even if the overall seasons weren't.
