2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

FSU will have to pull an all-time choke job to not win out. ND still has some teams with a pulse on their schedule to include USC in the Coliseum. But yeah, this is what TV wants too. And then after five years and everyone has forgotten the games, the NCAA will finally have the evidence to they need to forfeit all of FSU's games and ND will become the NC by default.

Well, they are the SEC network and all.

I have a gut feeling this first playoff is going to be a clusterfuck of major perceived failure.
If ND is in Chicago, NYC, Boston, Philly and Baltimore will watch regardless of the other 3 teams. If ND loses at least one more game - probably needs to lose two more 'cause their PR department is already thumping the "We wuz robbed!" theme - and why not, it was a pretty close call - (they should talk to Miami fans) trying to get that spot sewn up.

BUT, if it's FSU and 3 SEC teams there's a good chance most of the nation will not watch - especially the final game because it's a Monday night late start on the day before most of us have to work. I know I won't be watching if that's the call.

I can tell you I didn't watch the last 3 for that reason. It's late on a work night and the only way I would be interested if there was a possibility both teams could lose. Could easily happen this year. ND/FSU rematch and Bama/Ole Miss rematch. What really pisses me off is that will mean it's the first Rose Bowl I haven't watched in over a decade.

Seems you're singing a different tune about playoffs now....

No, playoff is better than no playoff...I just don't think 4 teams based on a small group with many biases is much of a way to decide things. Too easy to work the system to get the 4 teams you want in, without what happened on the field mattering. Heck, some Espin talking heads sound like both Notre Dame and FSU won. Sports don't work that way. Sports should not be a popularity contest in as far as deciding championships are concerned.

As I said years ago, the way to minimize this outside influence is to have all conferences get thier champions in, and then fill the rest of the spots (I'd assume this would be a 16 team playoff) with at-large teams. Those teams will obviously have bias, but at least 10 of the entered would be completely bias free, just based on results.

This may also encourage stronger OOC games, because losing them won't affect your conference standing, but will prepare you for conference play. And the at-large teams would need these strong games to stand out. But who freaking know. CFB scheduling is a joke. Needs a complete overhaul.

The one positive thing about the 4, is it is better than 2. 2 was still a popularity contest, now with 4 we at least have the champion decided on the field from those 4. It's just figuring out who those 4 are is impossible to do.

if ND is in, the whole country will watch to root against them.

that two...

As for the TV market, Baltimore is part of the single biggest TV market in the US starting just north of Boston and running south to Northern Virginia. the single largest religious group in that area is Catholic. You can break it into smaller markets for news and some sports if you insist, but the collective strength of the area drives much of TVs content.

They really need to end the charade and just expand the playoff to 8 teams. It's going to happen eventually, money will certainly drive it. I can only assume they decided with a 4 team format first to ease the transition. Expand it to 8, get the conference champions in there (Provided there isn't a fluke year where one of them has 3+ losses) and then you've got a few spots left for the at large teams like Boise State to make their case on the field.

And it needs to be a NATIONAL tournament, not a tourist industry festival.
