2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

The media refuses to admit in their self perpetuating nonsense that maybe I win over SC LSU Mizzou or ATM isn't worth dog [Mark May] at this point.
No..they admit that a win over Mizzou is worth crap when it's against the B1G (a team that's in last place)...but when it's an SEC team then oh lordy lordy how did they do it?

The perceived strength of schedule comes from preseason polls and playing nobody. The difference between any of the top 15 schools right now is extremely small. It's going to be a guessing game of who the top four are...and it will all be based on preseason biases, not on the field performance.

Miss St. And Ole Miss played nobody out of conference...nobody. When a conference plays nobody...then they are all 4-0 out of conference and when they play each other somebody has got to win and look like a beast.

The four most deserving teams to me are Oregon, Florida State, Notre Dame and Michigan State. Are they the best 4? Who knows...but from what we've seen, without bias, there is no way you can say Miss St. and Ole Miss are. Equal...sure. Better, why? Because they haven't lost by playing nobody and ESPN says so.

But the teams they want in will get in. Bama back up to 4, because we were told they were good by those that drive this thing.

It's not going to be who deserves it...it's going to be who those in power want. And that's Florida State, Notre Dame and the SEC.

And hell. Say Bama runs the table, and Mississippi State beats Ole Miss...then we have three 1 loss SEC teams. And since they all three played nobody but each other, we can just send all three...and they will.

Either get a system where you MUST play good OOC games or its all pointless.

Seems you're singing a different tune about playoffs now....

The problems I see with Minnesota are
1. We play them after MSU, so we'll already have a marquee victory or be out of contention
2. Minny finishes the season with Ohio State, @Corn, @Wiscy ... do they need 1 or 2 wins from that to be considered a quality opponent by the time the playoff committee is looking at total resumes? (rather than where SCe was ranked in week 1 or where Minny was ranked in week 12)
3. I imagine best case scenario is Neb wins out for a top-10 CCG game. That means Minnesota needs to win @Wiscy, and I have little faith. It's rare for 4-loss teams to make the cut, especially ones on a 3-game losing streak.

Nobody's counting on Minnesota being a true top-25 or top-15 team. All that matters is if they are ranked when the Buckeyes play them. That would provide some benefit superficially, and the attention span of college football isn't long enough for people to be bothered to go back and re-assess after a couple weeks.

Pretty much what I expected this week (gaining respect but not enough to move the needle past the overrated Big 12 teams). Half the teams ranked above us will drop below us just by playing each other. Beat Sparty, win out, and I'll take the odds.

Would you agree that the popularity of SEC football is mostly regional? Speaking in terms of the casual fan.

i'd say the popularity of the vast majority of college teams/conferences are mostly regional.

but what the SEC has going for it right now is the "evil villain" role.

much like the Yankees in baseball, or Notre Dame in their prime.
the big TV ratings aren't necessarily a sign of popularity, but rather a lot of people watching them and hoping they lose.

hell most of the non-LSU games I watch are chosen strictly on if I want/need one of the teams to lose.

The thing is week-to-week polls are utterly meaningless.
It might be a slight bump in media spin... but after CCGs, to the extent playoff committee is influenced by polls will only be the final ones. Where Minnesota is probably absent.

I love listening to media talk about how impressed they are by the SEC getting 4 teams in the top five of the poll - the media poll.

"This proves the SEC is awesome!"

No, it proves you think the SEC is awesome. We already knew that. Holy self-fulfilling prophecy, Batman. :roll1:

The only thing I like about this is that the committee comes out with their own rankings within about a week. This first week will likely be based closely on the ap poll (and it will have to, more on that later). Then in the next 5 weeks the ap poll will be put on the back burner much like how nobody really cares about the coaches poll. The committee rankings will be the numbers everyone talks about and they can massage them however they want in the next 5 weeks to get a better seperation from the ap poll. Then instead of the committee following the ap poll at the end of the year, the voters of the ap poll will look at the new numbers at the bottom of the screen from the committee and will be influenced by those.

Of course this will go to hell if the committee varies too much from the ap poll in their first rankings. That will just cause the media to talk about how different they are and every week will talk about where the committee should have each team if they would just follow the ap like they were supposed to.

Ha. Good point, Batman.
I just farted, and it smells bad in here. I just rated it in the top 5 stinkiest farts. See? I told you it smelled bad.
