2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

They really need to end the charade and just expand the playoff to 8 teams. It's going to happen eventually, money will certainly drive it. I can only assume they decided with a 4 team format first to ease the transition. Expand it to 8, get the conference champions in there (Provided there isn't a fluke year where one of them has 3+ losses) and then you've got a few spots left for the at large teams like Boise State to make their case on the field.

This. 16 is ridiculous... there's no need to include the mid-majors. The Autonomous Conferences are effectively a D1A+, it's been like that for awhile now too... we're just finally getting to stage where their power and competition level are reflected in NCAA rules.
Extending BCS' four bowls to the current six bowls making up this new format was also a fairly transparent move towards eventually having an 8-team playoff. You'd need exactly 6 bowls + "Neutral" (read: South) Final for an 8-team playoff. Have the 5 champs + ND/BYU/Mid-Major if they're up there, and ESPN's 2nd and 3rd SEC teams.

@Nutriaitch @BigWoof31
Would you agree that the popularity of SEC football is mostly regional? Speaking in terms of the casual fan.

80% yes.
I guess it depends on what you define as "popularity"

The league is regional based just like the Pac12. It's fans are generally located within the region and most graduates and recruits are pulled from that region.
Obviously, if there was a big SEC Game featuring teams in the top 10, I would suspect that TV ratings (a measure of popularity) would be high nationwide, simply based on college football fandom.

But, when LSU and Alabama had their BCS Championship game rematch it was the lowest rated championship game ever (In terms of viewership). So, I'm not so sure I can agree with the bold section above.

I think that was mostly due to the complete f'ing BS that there was a rematch of teams in the a single conference. For example, if osu and um rematched in 2007 it would have likely had crappy ratings as well. The true test would to look at the ratings for the initial game as @BigWoof31 said. When it was 1 vs 2 mid season. I bet those ratings were skrong.

If you're going to play for it, then let's play for it. I say you go to 16, and let teams like Marshall (this year, and back when they had Moss) play. You let in the Boise's and the UCF's of the world. Why not? Cut the season back a game, and have a 16 team playoff.

And teams shouldn't be allowed to schedule bye more than once a season. They seldom win and they don't draw dick.

if ND is in, the whole country will watch to root against them.
Will you tune in to watch the ND FSU rematch? How about the ole miss/Bama rematch? That's what it's shaping up to be. Maybe they will pull a complete 180 and put ole miss Against ND and Bama against FSU. Those are the 4 teams. It's already been decided. Just hope for miss st and ole miss to meet at the end of the year undefeated and a blowout. Knocks off the one that loses and Means Bama and auburn both have 2 losses. Then the west team can give Georgia a second loss. About the only way we get one sec team in to have an undefeated and a bunch of 2 loss teams.

I have absolutely no idea why this took place. But I'm guessing it was simply because six weeks earlier they saw the same game played.
If memory serves, the regular season game had exceptional ratings.

Maybe people just like cross regional games to determine the national title?

Who knows if that's true.
I'm wonder if after five years of a "Football Final Four" we see something similar to the Basketball Final Four - the semifinal games are significantly more entertaining and competitive than the final.

Those other regular seasons sure are riveting...

Fortunately for folks like you, Bristol has done a stellar job ruining the regular seasons with their propaganda and orchestrated rankings.
I'd like to think those teams competing for conference titles in FCS would say their seasons are plenty riveting, and that not a one takes the "Hey, we've already qualified for the top 16, so let's back off the remainder of the season" approach. I'm also sure the NFL is worried how riveting their 16-game regular season is when a full third of their teams qualify for the playoffs.

fans of that team watch or play regardless of the system, that was not my point.

CFB was great because every game could be life or death for that season. You tuned in to watch a colossal upset because of the implications. In your system you have to wait until November to truly believe the 4th place sec west team is out of the hunt, and it being their 3rd to 4th loss really takes the suspense out of the moment.

the only system where the NFL would not be popular is the lawsuit restricted one we are working towards.
