2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

CFB was great because every game could be life or death for that season. You tuned in to watch a colossal upset because of the implications. In your system you have to wait until November to truly believe the 4th place sec west team is out of the hunt, and it being their 3rd to 4th loss really takes the suspense out of the moment.
And under the BCS system a 2-loss SEC team still got into the title game...the media circle-jerk of the SEC doesn't depend upon the playoff system. Also, under the BCS a single loss early in the season could kill your chances...we'd have virtually no chance of the title this year if the BCS were still in place. At least now we have a slim chance, and with an 8- or 16-team playoff we'd be a lock to make it should we win out. I'd like to think you'd agree that if we do win out, we'd deserve a chance of being in the playoff.

I have absolutely no idea why this took place. But I'm guessing it was simply because six weeks earlier they saw the same game played.
If memory serves, the regular season game had exceptional ratings.

Maybe people just like cross regional games to determine the national title?
Well, that's the issue - and really the problem with ESPIN pimping the SEC the way it does - I think. Any time you have a rematch, there's a lot of folks who think "we already saw this one" Now, that said, I don't know that LSU and Alabama weren't the top two teams in football that particular season, and their regular season game was close (though it was a defensive struggle rather than an offensive fiesta). But, the fact remains - if the idea behind a playoff is "prove it on the field" Well.... didn't LSU already prove they were better than Bama? Why did they have to prove it again? And, in as much as they lost... was anything really "proven?" No.

It's even worse when a potential rematch would be a team which crushed the other - I can't recall the year, but I know it had to do with Oklahoma.. and I think TTU.. and a hypothetical 8 team scenario... OU would have had to play TTU in such a scenario... and they beat them 49-0 or some shit.

In any case - I think in most years there should only be one team per conference

Of course, it's all tail wagging the dog anyway. I mean, hell, if I had a multi-billion dollar company telling you that the top four teams in football were Sun Belt toughs, Troy, Georgia State, Idaho and Louisiana Monroe who are YOU to disagree with all my highly paid "experts?"

That's, of course, absurd... but.. it's the same functionality.

Think the Texas/Colorado in the Big 12 title game in 2005. Texas had already smoked Colorado in the regular season 42-17, but had to beat them again in the conference title game to be the "real" champion...they ended up ape-raping them 70-3.

Merge the "power 5" into a "power 4". Conference winners in a 4 team playoff. None of this [Mark May] about 8 teams... You win your conference you get a chance at the title...don't win your conference enjoy the bowl games

...and for people who like the idea of a larger playoff, in that kind of setup the conference championship games serve as a de facto first round comprised of 8 teams.

Unfortunately, demolishing one of the top 5 conferences will never happen. The amount of money that is being made on the TV deal's alone is too much to close the doors on a conference.

Whats both interesting and awesome is that the SEC is the 4th most profitable conference this year despite their bowl games.

I do like the idea of requiring a conference champ to be represented.

Two years ago there were six power conferences. Now there are five.

Lets follow the money

B1G - ESPN & Fox
ACC - ESPN
PAC 12 - ESPN & Fox
SEC - CBS & ESPN
BIG 12 - ESPN
fuck in ND join a conference or go play NAIA

lets assume it shakes out like this
FOX controls B1G & PAC 12
ESPN controls part of SEC and ACC & BIG 12 -2
CBS still has the SEC

I could easily see ESPN merging ACC & BIG 12-2 and maybe shedding some schools to the PAC 12 or B1G ....

4 conferences will happen within the next 5 years...

There are 3 conferences that will 100% be around due to some combination of success, money, and location: B1G, SEC, and PAC 12. Purely from a location standpoint the ACC makes the most sense to dissolve into other conferences, but from a most likely to disappear standpoint the Big 12 seems to be closer. So I'm not sure how that would work. But I guess another option could be an NFL style bye system. The 5 champions plus one wildcard team (this would also allow the possibility of a Boise State if they have a tremendous year). Then the top 2 teams get a bye.

Edit: and if ND is still such a bitch they can at least get in as a bye if they are a top team once every decade or so.
