2014 NFL (Well, Browns, so, sorta "NFL") Draft Thread

3- Seattle won bc they had an out of this world one of the best D's in a long long time. Seattle also has a stud RB, something we MAY or MAY NOT have now as we wait and see. That doesn't mean that their passing was terrible, they didn't utilize it that much because they didn't need to do so.

Passing is required to win in this league.

Passing is required to win... except for the teams that don't need to.

Who here doesn't enjoy the kind of elaborate performance art that HOLYBUCKEYE10 has brought to our fine forum? I just know I'm not looking forward to the day where he ends it by letting us all know that he has collected all of the observations on us that he needs to complete his dissertation.

Just like last year any trade won't get you the value that you will get with Gordon being on the field. I'd guess they give him one more chance. If he fails another test his NFL career is over.

Be nice if the NFL would lighten up on weed and limit banned substances to performance enhancers, but on the other hand can't you give up pot for 5-10 years while you play in the NFL? My company tests for pot so I don't smoke pot if I really wanted to smoke I'd go find a job someplace that doesn't care.

I wouldn't in a million years get rid of Josh Gordon. They just need to treat any value they get from him like found money. If the Browns look at it that way, the only way they lose is if he gets his act together and produces for another team. Who cares if the Browns are holding the bag when he smokes away his career permanently?

Yeah, almost all those teams have at least one WR better than our does now.
The Colts had a venerable wr corps. Most of the rest had one good one and some good role wrs (like Hines in sb 2). Plop any of those wr corps onto the browns and I'd argue they are picking in the top 5 next year unless it is Harrison/Wayne.

As I said before you could sign megatron tomorrow and maybe you could become the lions (who did exactly what you are discussing here, loading up on o instead of fixing their glaring holes elsewhere)

When Brady had an amazing passing game he failed. When he had a clutch but uninspiring passing game but had a stellar defense, running game and special teams to back him up, he won every time.

The offense was clear and by far away the biggest issue this team had last year. It's not even close. Rushing was the biggest hole and we did fill that nicely with Ben Tate and a nice late rd selection of West. We have to at least consider the fact that Gordon just may not be on the team a few years into the future. He clearly doesn't get it as he once again failed a drug test. He has a history of making that dumb choice and there is no reason to believe this will be the last of it. You cannot count on a guy like that. That is why Watkins was a necessity. I won't Gordon to stick around and keep being great, but there is no reason as of now to assume he will with his problems. Getting Watkins would have secured a star WR for the future and made this Gordon suspension a good deal easier to swallow.

If we luck out and only lose Gordon for say 4 games, or if we pull a good move and sign someone solid, I will feel a lot better about things.

At the end of the day, every single expert I read seems to agree that it's puzzling CLE didn't take and WR and that they don't think it's the wisest choice. I am a lot more inclined to agree with unbiased experts all around the league then some rose colored glasses posters on here.

I would love nothing more to be wrong and have Hawkins emerge or Gordon not get suspended or us sign someone to stop gap his loss a little, but the only potential scenario I see is the last one.

We're Browns fans. There are no "rose colored" glasses. If anything, we're probably the harshest critics of this franchise and the decisions that have come with that.

Fact is, Watkins as a rookie this year would not have had the impact you're stating. Down the road? Possibly. However we've seen what happens even when good QB's with a pair of great recievers don't have proper surrounding players (see: Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Indy).

Addressing the Oline and running game solidifies the chances that should Manziel step under center next year with a bonafide rookie WR and possibly Gordon - the line will be able to keep a young QB clean.

edit: Let me expand upon the bold part. The offense was the biggest issue, that you are right. The running game was the issue coupled with our line play. You can't address one and not the other. Which is what Farmer has done. I'll admit I was a bit sharp in my tongue with the trade down then trade up, I"m still not happy about Manziel but I'm warming up to Farmer & Co. staying true to their board. As mentioned above, we had a decent passing game last year, upper half of the league. However with a defense that surrendered late leads and a ground game that couldn't close. The offense was the biggest weakness, and those two sub factors the greatest of said weakness. Now addressed.

You are of course assuming Watkins will be a star, and be a star his rookie year...which is a big assumption. And even if he is, he would not produce like Gordon did last year, so at best he would be a good but not great substitute. I suppose it is possible that Watkins is a once-in-a-generation star, but it is unlikely.

So it's "puzzling" to the so-called "experts" that we didn't draft a WR. Well, it was "puzzling" to those same "experts" that we didn't draft Manziel at 4...and then we didn't draft him at 8. Well you know what? He was still there at 22. So the "experts" sometimes don't know dick.

Holy, let's pretend that Watkins is a star in year 1, setting aside the probability of him failing, or the line, or the latest in a very long line of Cleveland qbs.

Can you point out times where a strong rookie wr elevated a bad team and offense into a good team?

P.s. I am a redskins fan.

He loves smoking lettuce more than he loves the Browns or his career. Interestingly enough, this was the question about him several years ago, and why he was in the supplemental draft. He has answered that question. No one will touch him with a ten foot pole.

Teams will always still go for him - it's the same reason teams still go after Michael Vick, went after Randy Moss, etc. etc. The Browns will have him back, he's on a rookie contract and no point in cutting a talent like him loose for a non-offensive crime such as pot when he's so cheap.

If he has the talent and is eligible to play some team will take a chance on him. Actually probably several teams will. There is always a change that he finally "gets his act together". Anything is possible with him, remember Cris Carter went from ADDICTION TO SUPERSTARDOM.

Gordon could do it too.

I like how everyone arguing with HOLY is ignoring the age old, tried and true truth that "WR's win championships".

You know Vince Lombardi coined that very phrase. I mean the mans name is on the trophy lol! And if Mike Pettine hasn't won a Super Bowl by year 3 we need to fire him and hire a coach that has won a Super Bowl dammit!

(did I get enough bad punctuation, lols, 'we' and 'us' references in there?)

How on earth does me saying we need an upgrade at the passing game with Watkins out equal me saying the Browns need to have a high flying passing attack? You are arguing against me on things I never even said.

What I have said for those of you who seem to keep making up your own story.
1- We can't assume Gordon is the future of this team at WR anymore, Watkins would have gone along way giving us a #1 for the future if Gordon doesn't workout.
2- We need better WR's then who we have now if Gordon misses if we want to become more successful and compete.
3- We did a good job getting Tate and making our running game actually relevant, but the NFL isn't nearly as reliant on rushing as it used to be.
4- We have a rookie QB and a 3 game starting QB coming off an ACL injury, so having better than average WRs goes along way in making their life easier. We don't have much outside of Gordon that much is clear.
