2014 NFL (Well, Browns, so, sorta "NFL") Draft Thread

First round draft order with team needs

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap20...-draft-order-top-three-needs-for-all-32-teams

In reality, I started this thread to discuss the Browns draft needs. They have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds (2 1st's, 1 2nd, 2 3rd's) and although I don't recommend drafting on need, this team is so close (in my head, at least) that forcing the issue to upgrade certain positions may be enough to push us into the playoffs next year. Below are the major needs, from what I see....

QB - in a perfect world, I wouldn't mind drafting a guy like Hundley with our 2nd first rounder and letting him sit behind Hoyer for a year or so.

RB - don't need to say much here, but a do it all back is necessary.....Carlos Hyde in the 2nd please.

WR - Benjamin and Gordon can stretch the field, having a guy like Marquise Lee with sure hands (ah hem, Bess) could make this offense deadly.

OG/OT - best available, can always slide Schwartz to OG if you find a true OT

ILB - I was such a big fan of Robertson but this was a rough year for him, specifically in coverage. Maybe he'll have a bounce back year like Skrine.

CB - not a major need, as Skrine has performed very well this year, but we need depth and if a guy like Fuller from VT is sitting there in the late 3rd that wouldn't be a bad option.

Thoughts on your teams draft needs, targets? One thing I'll find interesting is what Houston does with the #1....do they go Bridgewater, or do they go for Clowney and have an ends set of JJ Watt and Clowney....would be lethal.

Best player available. Ideally I'd like the draft to be that Evans kids from A&M, then either Mosley at ILB or the best CB available. That kid from Oregon State would make a hell of a slot receiver. However we aren't the rams and I wouldn't dropped a 1st rounder on him. This scenario is from my current perch. If Bortles has a good bowl season and combine, I'd take him, then Mosley, Hyde in the 2nd, CB in the 3rd with Oline depth after. I'm still hoping Fragel has been all about strength training because I'd love to move Schwartz inside and Reed at RT. That athletic ability could do wonders against teams looking to employ two pure pass rushers ( I.e. The Miami game this year)

Ultimately there is still a lot of time between now and then. So much can change. Of course I'm always scared to draft a QB. Especially with a franchise as snakebit as this one in terms of QB's. However with Hoyer and Campbell, we have the rare gift of being able to sit our rookie and let him learn whilst the team around him improves. For the shitty record this team has, I can't remember the last time I've seen a glimmer of hope this bright in Cleveland. Please re-sign Ward.

As much as I want to see Ward and Mack stay with the Browns I wouldn't break the bank for either of them.

They need to lose to the Steelers Sunday. I'm not sure what scenarios are there for the draft, but it seems like they could end up anywhere from 2-8 depending what everyone else does. A loss should keep them in the top 5.

The Browns need an RT that can pass protect and an interior OL that can open holes for the running game. If this can be done with players already on the roster that's great, but no RB would be successfully behind this OL. They have Fragel and they stashed Chris Faulk from LSU on the IR this year so both of them might be options. I'd love to see them draft Hyde in the 2nd, but I have doubts if he'll be there. They need to pick a QB in their first 3 picks without moving too many picks to leverage the draft flexibility that they have. I would love to see them pull in another #1 or 2 WR in the draft to pair with Gordon and bump Little down to 3 or 4.

On D they need another young CB, but not before the 3rd round. The other critical need is an ILB that can make plays. If Ward leaves they will need to find a safety, but that probably isn't an option in the draft. I think they still have Jamoris Slaughter on the practice squad so he might be worth a look a safety if he's back from injury.

This might be the biggest off season for the Browns since they actually have some pieces in place to be successful.

This mock popped up on one of my home pages, so what the hell.

5. Cleveland Browns - Blake Bortles, QB, UCF Brandon Weeden won't be back in Cleveland, Jason Campbell is a stopgap and while Brian Hoyer is still in the team's long-term plans, he's coming off an ACL injury and Cleveland needs to add a young arm to the mix. Bortles is very reminiscent of Ben Roethlisberger when he was coming out of Miami (Ohio) and has intriguing pro potential.

16.* Dallas Cowboys - HaHa Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama The Cowboys drafted the strong safety of the future last season with J.J. Wilcox, but free safety is a different discussion. Clinton-Dix would provide an immediate upgrade at free safety and would help give Dallas some semblance of a pass defense.

Dallas has been looking for a safety since Darren Woodson retired but Jerrah doesn't seem to want to spend a high pick on one. I'll let the Browns fans comment on Bortles.

What if the Texans decide to take Clowney on the opposite end as Watt?

There are several QBs in this draft and they probably could get one at 33, unless they really think one is head and shoulders above the rest.

Depends on the coach... given the speed limits here in Texas... I fear driving in the same city as him.

Bridgewater has declared draft eligibility.

I've tried to be opossed to Teddy for some time but after watching the Miami game I just can't. I'd love to have the kid fall to us at #4 but can't see any situation that happens as St. Louis will gladly take the best deal to get out of #2 (unless they take him...now that'd be a shocker).

The good thing is the Browns have plenty of options; what if they decide Jake Matthews is the BPA and move Schwartz inside? I would be 0% against the idea of going into next year with Hoyer as the starter. Of course, that's why the team is where they are, but I'm a fan of his. Maybe you take a 2nd rounder or 3rd rounder on a guy like Fales out of SJSU, Boyd, McCarron, Mannion if he declares, Garoppolo, etc. Point being, there are plenty of options available.

That being said, with this regime, I can't imagine them not taking a QB first to put their 'stamp' on it and wouldn't be surprised if they got hosed on a deal to move up to #2 to draft Manziel.

@bigdog3300 I would think that you would get a much better response if you would post your specific Browns draft posts in the Cleveland Browns thread. Trying to make this thread specific to the Browns was a bad idea with its title.

The first post says he started the thread to discuss the Browns draft.
I do not want to start any trouble. All I know is that there is a lot out of posts in the Browns thread about the draft. I just think that some people forget to come over here, including myself, to talk about the Cleveland Browns draft.
To get this back on track....

Blake Bortles I don't think helped nor hurt himself last night; I still think Top 5 is a push for him as I'd much rather have Bridgewater, Manziel, Hundley, Carr, etc.
As I stated above, I just think people forget to come over here to talk specifically about the Browns draft. A better title to this thread might have helped.

I would not mind seeing the Browns take the QB from UCF with their first pick but I also like Johnny football or the QB from UCLA but now with my first pick.

I would go with Bortels given the choice, Johnny football is only about 5'10".
